Arriva have recently taken the 48 from Stagecoach. The route was intended to convert to LT at the same time, but the buses haven't been delivered yet so it's started with mainly DW operation, of which DW238 here is a typical example.

As a token gesture a few LTs have been mustered from a PVR reduction elsewhere but these DB300s will be the mainstay of the route for a few weeks yet.

The bus is seen at Leyton Bakers Arms, right outside Costa Coffee! 29/3/17.

When the temperature is low enough, the ocean starts to freeze. Ice bergs form and slushy waves change the landscape of the beach before your eyes. I love watching the changes and the beautiful sea green color in the waves.

I am back at my parents for the month. They don't really use the main computer at all so I have salvaged it for temporary parts. Dual screen was hard to get used to but man, it is so much more convenient with two screens.

I also hooked up my new tablet and the whole setup is so cool. I like this setup so much, I am thinking about getting a new monitor for when I go back to my place at Loughborough.

Only thing that can complete this is a keyboard and mouse and something to put the MacBook Pro higher so it rests at a better line of sight. Ah, so need to save up.

Pictured plywood panels in background were temporarily installed to establish approximate sizing of the windshield frames thus provide perspective.

Aft pilothouse bulkheads braced to keep them plumb.

Reviewing the issues on fabricating a three section windshield frame:

- the plans prescibe that the top of the center section tilts aft about 24 degrees which establishes tilt of outer sections

- each section will be about 28" wide

- the port and starboard window sections will end 9" from their respective sheer lines and the outer vertical pieces of these sections must be angled to match the tilted pilothouse sides.

- the center window section will open via a hinge at the top of the frame

- the bottom edges of the frames must be scribed to match the curvature of the foredeck

- the top edge of the frames must be scribed and trimmed to fit the interior curvature of the torsion box pilot house roof

The last requirement of the windshield frame/roof arc meeting is the one that creates a challenge. I suppose that an application of intellect beyond my abilities and use of a laser could render a simpler solution than mine.

My solution:

Using the template that was used to create the plywood forms for the laminating jig for the transom, foredeck and eventually the pilothouse roof, I created the two pictured curved plywood forms.

The laminating jig will be used to fabricate the pilothouse roof. Consequently, I needed to increase the radius of the pictured plywood forms to match the radius of the laminating jig that has 2X2s on top of the plywood forms.

Based on a string depicting the keel centerline, I positioned the crown or center of these two plywood forms so that the forms are in the same alignment in regards to being directly above the keel line and later will be in harmony with the fore and aft centerline of the yet to be fabricated pilothouse roof. Of course the bottom of the plywood forms are level. The pole spanning the forms is also level. When the pole is positioned directly above the keel line, the pole's bottom edge is 76" above the pilothouse sole.

Every six inches I indexed the plywood forms so the pole can be positioned along the arc of these forms and always kept parallel with the keel line.

The pole can now be slid forward until it touches the window frame and a line can be scribed to cut the frame. The top edge of the frames must be trimmed level to match the pilothouse attachment point thus a major challenge as none of these frames are plumb. Better yet, I can fabricate a router attachment point at the end of the pole so the frames can be trimed via a router thus very accurately and level. That is the theory and this event will bear watching as moderate potential for disaster including putting a spinning router bit into the top of my head.

Mistakes in frame fabrication especially in the the scribing and trimming in the frame top edges can easily be corrected/hidden in a frame to be painted. However, and it is a big however, I am building my frame out of dimensional mahogany which will be varnished inside and out thus much more difficult to hide a mistake.

In regards to a brightwork windshield frame, one voice said, Dave you are looking for trouble and unleashing a major time sink with all the angles, necessity for clean tight joints and too much other stuff going on in the frame fabrication. And then the Devil came on the scene and said, "Dave it is all easy and go ahead and spend much money on the mahogany."

I shot this about a month ago as a storm was brewing. I loved the dark, menacing sky in contrast to the bright sun that was still lighting the mangroves.

I thought it might symbolize my situation at the moment--Tuesday morning I went to answer the telephone in my kitchen and somehow slipped, so instantaneously that I was unable to stop my fall and my entire weight landed on my left kneecap (patella). I heard a sickening crack and knew I had done it good! So to the hospital I went and Wednesday the orthopedic trauma team operated, wired and screwed it back together and sent me home Thursday in a brace from ankle to thigh to keep it immobile for the next 4-6 weeks. After that, there will be therapy to get the knee bending again as it should--so that will be the light on the mangrove trees to look forward to. (At least I'm trying to convince myself that it won't hurt and I'll breeze through it--we'll see how that prediction turns out!) :-(

For those of you not familiar with mangrove ecosystems, I've included a link --they are very important to many of the world's ecosystems, and many worldwide, as here in Florida, are being endangered at an alarming rate. www.floridaplants.com/horticulture/mangrove.htm

Thanks to all my wonderful contacts for your good wishes-yes, thank goodness, I have some good pain meds and wonderful friends who have stopped by with yummy food!

Vienna Concert House (2006)

The Wiener Konzerthaus was opened in 1913. It is on the 3rd Viennese district road (Lothringerstraße) at the edge of the Inner City between Schwarzenberg Square and City Park .

Architectural History

Ludwig Baumann planned Olympion Art Show 1908, the main building Concert Hall, detail

1890 for a planned house music festivals should be considered as multi-purpose building to address a broader public than the just 200 meters away traditional Viennese Musikverein. The design by architect Ludwig Baumann for a Olympion contained several concert halls except an ice rink and a Bicycleclub. In addition, an open-air arena should offer 40,000 visitors. The skating rink and its adjacent buildings were realized in 1899 by Baumann plans, the Art Nouveau ensemble but fell in 1960 to a construction of the InterContinental Hotels Group to the victim. The Vienna Ice Skating Club is located on the then reduced by about a third place today. The popular freestyle wrestling at the Haymarket took place here.

Organised by Gustav Klimt and his friends art exhibition Vienna 1908 was held in a temporary exhibition building on the undeveloped site of the later concert hall. The Wiener Konzerthaus was finally built 1911-1913 by the Europe-wide Viennese theater architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer Younger (Office Fellner & Helmer ) in collaboration with Ludwig Baumann.

The theme of the concert hall was:

A facility for the care of fine music, a collection of artistic aspirations, a home for music and a house for Vienna.

On 19 October 1913 the Concert Hall in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I with a gala concert of the Vienna Concert Society was opened (now the Vienna Symphony Orchestra ). Richard Strauss composed this be Festive Prelude Op 61. Was combined with this modern work Beethoven's 9th Symphony - the juxtaposition of tradition and modernity should be so much in the first concert of the house.

The disintegration of Austria-Hungary brought tremendous social upheaval and financial crises - and thus flexibility and versatility was also necessary for lack of money. In addition to classical repertoire, there were in the 1920s and 1930s, important world premieres (including Arnold Schoenberg and Erich Wolfgang Korngold ), concerts with jazz and pop songs, speeches from science to spiritualism and poetry readings (including Karl Kraus ). Dance and ballroom events, some large conferences and world championships for boxing and fencing completed the program.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, the program for impoverished "non- degenerate entertainment operation ", to many artists remained only the emigration.

After 1945, the concert hall also had the secondary task , " prop up " the bruised Austrian self-confidence in a musical way. In addition to the standard repertoire of classical and romantic and the Viennese Waltz , there were still premieres (eg Schoenberg's oratorio The Jacob's Ladder 1961) and international jazz and pop concerts. From May 1946 spaces for recording studios and administration at the German and in Vienna living music producer Gerhard Mendelson were rented, who is considered one of the most important pop producers in Austria in the postwar period.

After several modifications that changed the original Art Nouveau decoration slightly , the house was restored from 1972 to 1975 to the only slightly altered original plans. From 1998 to 2001 the house was renovated by architect Hans Puchhammer and expanded to include a new concert hall (New Hall) .

From 1989 to 2002 the Vienna Kathreintanz also took place in the concert hall .

Building

Saw the concert at the House of Lorraine Street (Lothringerstraße), the Schwarzenbergplatz

The floor plan approximately 70 x 40 meters large concert hall with the main entrance at the Lothringerstraße and other inputs in the Lisztstraße includes Haymarket (Heumarkt) since the opening three concert halls:

Large hall with 1865 seats

Mozart Hall with 704 seats

Schubert Hall with 366 seats

The new hall (with 400 seats) was not established until the general renovation of 1998 to 2002. The new hall was renamed at the start of the 2009/2010 season in Berio-Saal.

On the home front, the right and left of the entrance, is the inscription

Honor your German Masters, then you are storing good spirits.

Here is a quote from the final chorus for the opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by Richard Wagner.

In all rooms the same time can take place, since they do not affect each other acoustically different concerts.

Inside stands in the foyer of the original model created in 1878 by Kaspar von Zumbusch Beethoven Monument, which is situated opposite the Concert Hall at the Beethoven place. At the staircase there is a relief homage to Emperor Franz Joseph (1913 ) by Edmund Hellmer . Furthermore, a bust of Franz Liszt by Max Klinger to mention in 1904.

The complex of the concert hall and the building is part of the K. K Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (now the University of Music and Dramatic Art). Adjoining rooms for academic teaching purposes this part of the building also contains the Academy theater with 521 seats, which is used as a secondary stage of the Burgtheater world premieres among other modern plays.

Great Hall and Organ

The Great Hall has a capacity of 1116 visitors (ground floor) and additional 361 balconies and boxes, and 388 in the gallery. The auditorium is 750 m2 and 170 m2 of the podium. In the 1960s the hall was optimized by Heinrich Keilholz.

The organ was built in 1913 in the Great Hall of the Rieger organ (Rieger-Orgel) (Jägerndorf, Silesia) built. The instrument is located on the end wall of the big room, but has no visible Prospectus. The organ is located behind a grid and is thus hidden from the visitors. The cone-chest-116 instrument has five registers on manual and pedal works and is the largest organ in Austria. The special features of the organ counts, firstly, that the four manual divisions are swellable. In addition, the organ comprises a (swellable ) remote work with separate pedal. Stylistically, the organ is "Alsatian Organ reform " aimed at the so-called ideal of where along the lines of major instruments of Aristide Cavaillé -Coll, the strong voices are divided into two manuals. The tracker action is electro-pneumatic. For the inauguration of the instrument Strauss had the " Festive Prelude " for organ and orchestra composed. In 1982 the instrument was restored.

This is what a finished loading track looks like. "Straight" and "level" are terms not often associated with these temporary installations laid directly on the peat. The ditch at left is the delineator between adjacent fields.

Janny had a temporary handicap placard due to her leg injury, so we were all set to use it on our visit to The Counter and Valley Fair. In both places, though, we were able to find non-handicapped parking super close to the entrance.

I realized something at the mall in particular, though. It seems a bit odd to have handicap spaces really close to the entrance, when the entrances are typically far away from anything. The percentage of walking Janny would have saved if we were only able to find a spot at the farthest end of the parking lot would have been quite small when compared with the amount of walking we did around the mall.
