In early February, 2015, northwest Indiana was on the receiving end of Mother Nature's wrath. Lake effect snow fell off and on for several days. Chicago received a healthy dumping as well, creating havoc on the rails.
In addition to the snow, Mother Nature also turned down the temperatures and decided to whip up the winds. It was brutal!
Any railroader with some whiskers knows what to expect when faced these conditions. Switches get snowed in, brakes ice and freeze up, and motive power fails.
On this particular run out of Chicago, we unfortunately hit the trifecta. Each switch in the yard had to be swept almost every time before throwing due to the winds. Once we had the train solid, the air test took quite some time to complete as one car refused to release.
Finally, a few hours behind the carded departure time, we hit the mains and headed east. Just after crossing the Calumet River Bridge, the lead unit of our three unit set died. I limped the train down to Whiting and notified with the dispatcher.
After several attempts to restart this Dash 9 failed, I made a call to the mechanical desk on my phone. It was soon discovered that unit had developed a serious issue and needed to be shopped.
Not long after this determination, the Chief Dispatcher radioed and asked if we could get the train to Elkhart where a new leader would be added to the consist. This idea involved the prospect of traveling close to 90 miles, under blizzard conditions, with no heat.
Needless to say, this conversation was a short one as all involved agreed it was the safest course to get a new leader right where we stood. This was not possible, for we were not the only train with power problems.
While the Dearborn office brainstormed options, I went back to the second unit and gave it a once over to see if it was fit to lead. After determining the engine was fully equipped, and the heater worked, I pitched the idea to the dispatcher.
It did not take long to get a thumbs up from Dearborn. We set the failed unit out at Colehour, rearmed the marker, and headed east.
Now, I have to admit that my suggestion was two sided. It really was the best in terms of getting this late priority train moving again, a huge benefit for the railroad.
For me, it meant that a rare (on NS) Cyclops SD60M would now be the leader. Through all of years running trains, I never had one of these unique three windowed units be lead out.
My run on her was just under 90 miles, due to adding a cab signal equipped engine at Elkhart. I enjoyed my time behind the throttle, especially the distinctive view.
At Holmesville, we came to a halt for a maintainer to inspect power switches in Laporte. After taking a few photos, I took several minutes to enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest and falling snow. It was so calming and peaceful.
Speaking of peace, my hope for 2025 is a decrease in the level of chaos across the globe, and here in the states. It concerns me to see the direction the world is heading.
Merry Christmas my friends!
This image shows Castell Dinas Brân along with a temperature inversion around sunset Sunday evening. We drove through Llangollen in thick mist and thought it would be a good idea to see if it was clear as far up as we could go up the Panorama.
With the temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, 66743 pulls forward from the loaders with the 6S45 0908 North Blyth to Fort William loaded aluminia. In the summer months this locomotive is usually allocated to Royal Scotsman duties but during the winter rather less glamorous, but much more interesting, work is undertaken.

Unusually warm temperatures have led to a lack of snow and an overall theme of brown in the plant life, so a welcome sight of Metra MP36PH-3C #402 leading Rock Island District #401 is most needed. The classic Rock Island era searchlights at Robbins Illinois make it all the better.

Temperatures aren't coming down here in California, but at least the days are getting shorter and the morning fog gives a brief respite from the heat.

Really stunned that I got an explore. Thank you all for your faves and comments. I will reply soon and visit back if poss, to each of your streams.
It's January in Canada. The temperature is in the minus double digits. The wind is 40km/h straight off of Lake Ontario. But there's a small problem: CN 149 has just departed Belleville with a recently reactivated BCOL 4625 in the lead. And better yet, the crew has thoughtfully turned the classification lights on. What do you do? The obvious answer is drop everything and freeze while waiting for said train to show up.
Low air temperature while the big freshwater lake Vättern is still open, often result in ice sculptures like this.

Temperatures were rising already as this empty phosphate train passed us, hauled by a Japanese Hitachi loocomotive.

The colors in the rocks in south Utah are just amazing. And the water and wind erosion have carved them into neat designs , I just love it there(but not at the current temperatures).
The temperature has been well above freezing in recent days, and it’s been raining. The snow is melting fast.
Temperatures of slightly below 20 degrees and sunshine from the early morning till sunset. Just a fine Sunday and no doubt, spring has arrived in East-Westphalia. So it was logical that we took the day for a long hiking trip along the river Weser between Minden and Petershagen, continued the mill project with two more locations and enjoyed the sunset in Porta Westfalica along the river banks.

Entrada Sandstone Wall and Moon
Arches National Park, UT
Water, ice, extreme temperatures, and underground salt movement are responsible for the sculptured rock landscape of Arches NP. The park sits atop an underground salt bed that is thousands of feet thick in places. It was deposited across the Colorado Plateau 300 million years ago when a sea in the region eventually evaporated. Over the millions of years, residues from floods, winds, and oceans that came and went, blanketed the salt bed with debris that eventually compressed as rock. Over time the salt bed shifted, fractured, liquified and repositioned itself, thrusting the rock layers upward as domes. With this shifting, surface erosion stripped off younger rock layers leaving the beautiful sandstone formations that are seen today in Arches. Most of the major formations in the park are salmon-colored Entrada Sandstone, in which most arches form, and buff-colored Navajo Sandstone. (Arches National Park Pamphlet)
During winter, while between houses, we had a very cold spell. A walk through the local woodland was magical in the sub-zero temperatures as frost clings to the bare branches of the trees.
As temperatures drop in late autumn and winter, small mammals become less active. Less active prey make a lot less noise and are therefore much harder for Barn Owls to find and catch. Barn Owls are poorly insulated and need extra energy (food) during cold weather to make up for an increased loss of body heat. In winter then, food is generally harder to find at a time when Barn Owls need it most.
I missed the Monarch butterfly's emergence. I now know given our recent temperatures and rainfall, the time between Monarch's pupa and butterfly is 16 days. You can see the pupa's case in the lower right of the image. The pupa that was on the siding is also now empty.
I had given up and was taking photos at the Nature Center in a light drizzle. In preparation for other yard work I noticed the fresh Monarch (Danaus plexippus). Yipee, so happy to have had one small success. Safe travels.
Yesterday's blue skies, dry weather and moderate temperatures made up for several weeks of cold and rainy days.
Dot was positively gleeful as she ran across the lawn and flew down the steps to begin her patrol of the driveway and the surrounding ferns and shrubs. She also reveled in chomping on long blades of fresh, green grass.
For reasons known only to her, Dot maintains a serious demeanor while she pads across the terrain. Only when Dot makes eye contact with us does her mask slip and reveal the sweet house cat we know so well.

🎶[Starman (David Bowie Live!)] 🎶
Didn't know what time it was, the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was laying down some rock 'n' roll
"Lotta soul," he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
I had to phone someone so I picked on you
Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window, I can see his light
If we can sparkle he may land tonight
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
Starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky

'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile

Temperatures below zero were present almost every day during my visit to the famous Kirkjufell volcano. The waterfalls and the riverbed were practically frozen. In spite of the freezing temperatures, I was able to enjoy this beautiful sunset and take this 12-photo panorama in this iconic place in Iceland. A perfect combination for the land of ice and fire as Iceland is actually well-known

With temperatures hitting -20*C and 50km wind gusts out of the east, I knew I had to visit Mermaid Cove for scenes like this ...

Total temperature drop over night was 75 F degrees. From a high at 3:30 p.m. of 51F, it dropped by 8 a.m. to -24F.
(10C to -21 C for those of you in civilized nations.)
Many parts of the U.S. and Canada will have temperatures not seen in living memory.
High for the day here will be -4. The official weather station is at the airport, which can get 10 or so degrees colder than downtown.
On 7 previous occasions, mostly before the weather station moved, it has reached -25 or lower.
Not much snow, though. In Colorado, the unofficial place to measure snow depth is atop porch furniture. Looks like 2.5 inches, or 63 mm.
Some parts of town had the first 30 degrees or so of the drop within 15 minutes as the cold front rolled through. People out biking or running in shorts were taken by surprise.

Back in a region I really enjoy, where I had already been in 2024, in the Abisko area. On this day, a large part of the lake was hit by a blizzard. We went to the edge of this blizzard, which was blocked by the mountains, sending us some pretty strong bursts. The wind chill was –19°C, with winds reaching 70–80 km/h.
The landscape was gorgeous under the clear sky, but the wind carried huge amounts of snow, which made visibility extremely limited! We experienced this whiteout up close all while staying safely sheltered!
Temperatures are over 100 degrees these days. No rain since late March.
I watched these three enter the property and make a beeline for the bucket. They didnt care I was 20 feet away.

A lovely temperature inversion this morning, which I nearly missed because it looked so slate grey out of the window. I was in no rush to go out but when I got down to the estuary it was stunning and perfect conditions for the drone and a shot I wouldn't have got without it.
In fact this is the shot that convinced me to upgrade my drone as the mini 2 SE didn't do raw files, so I bought the mini 3 after this, raw files and better dynamic range
