The temperature goes down, not even the sun can temper it. There are hidden corners in the forest not to be melted for a long time. For as long as the shadows dwell there.

Temperatures were rising quickly, and soon we were baking in the sun again :)

With the temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, 66743 pulls forward from the loaders with the 6S45 0908 North Blyth to Fort William loaded aluminia. In the summer months this locomotive is usually allocated to Royal Scotsman duties but during the winter rather less glamorous, but much more interesting, work is undertaken.

I managed to get out early on the latest in a series of misty mornings characterised by a temperature inversion in the Derwent Valley (and, indeed, across a much wider area). I took this shortly after sunrise with mist starting to roll in to envelop Over Owler Tor.

Temperature was -13 Fahrenheit with a windchill of -36.

When times are hard and you have to survive any food will do! Temperatures were -5 and the grey wagtail was struggling to find its usual insect prey. I watched this bird fishing for small fish that it caught several of! AMAZING!

This image shows Castell Dinas Brân along with a temperature inversion around sunset Sunday evening. We drove through Llangollen in thick mist and thought it would be a good idea to see if it was clear as far up as we could go up the Panorama.

When the ice moves (for example because of wind or temperature changes) sometimes hair-thin cracks appear around larger cracks. Shape and direction depends on how the ice moved. It's the air inside those cracks that make it possible to see them. Since they are extremely thin they often disappear within hours.

My last shot of the Sycamore tree in the aptly named Sycamore gap in Northumberland . Hadrian`s wall comes down past the tree and is very popular with walkers as well as photographers.I had to clone out some people and a dog to give me a clean image, I used a ploariser to bring more colour and detail to the sky . I would happily go back to photograph this area again as it is fascinating, We have been lucky enough to have been here twice, the first time in midwinter with minus temperatures with a gale blowing, we had it to ourselves that time.

The second visit we stayed over night at a local pub but being May it was busy, I know which time I prefer, I did see some photographs during the week with the Northern lights here again I wish............

We have had a foot or more of snow earlier in the week, most of which has melted. The weekend temperatures have been in the high forties. We are

expecting another foot of snow in the next two days, along with much lower temperatures.

This is the magnificent maple across the street, a favorite subject of mine. Very wet snow, a total lack of wind and temperatures just below freezing make for a lovely coating of snow on everything that is neither melting nor falling off.

Up until the rain yesterday we've had some lovely hoar frosts here in the last few weeks. The lovely pre-dawn glow was beautiful as it radiated onto the delicate frost-laden grasses.

Autumn or summer? High winds through storm Callum, temperatures unseasonably high, summer plants still in flower but leaves falling and covering the ground. Here Sneinton windmill sits proud against the blue sky in a mix of flowers and leaves.

Today's temperature is forecast to be WARMER than yesterday.

Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery, Woodbridge, 13,5%

This Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery is absolutely gorgeous! At a temperature of 20 degrees, the wine is “drinkable”, with very soft tannins, a slight flavor of currants and other dark berries. The acidity is minimal, the wine is light and goes well with boiled meat. For its almost budget price of 500 hryvnia, the wine is beyond praise. I regret that I only bought two bottles at the time.

The color is red with a ruby tint. The aroma has tones of red fruits and spices. Cherry and spices are felt in the taste. The aftertaste is long and velvety, with a pleasant tartness of ripe bird cherry berries.

It is dry with very small acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, it is well-balanced and had a moderate length finish.

Nowadays, Napa Valley has become a US wine legend. Clay soils and an excellent drainage system allow for the creation of some of the most interesting and profound wines in the world. It was the wines from Napa Valley that once glorified the Mondavi company and Robert Mondavi himself.

It's January in Canada. The temperature is in the minus double digits. The wind is 40km/h straight off of Lake Ontario. But there's a small problem: CN 149 has just departed Belleville with a recently reactivated BCOL 4625 in the lead. And better yet, the crew has thoughtfully turned the classification lights on. What do you do? The obvious answer is drop everything and freeze while waiting for said train to show up.

Yesterday, our temperatures dropped dramatically, going down to minus 1 overnight and around 4 degrees during the day. All the cats have taken to sleeping near radiators, buried under duvets or in front of the open fire which we lit for the first time yesterday. Thankfully we have missed the snow that some of the rest of the UK has had and luckily, at the weekend, the temperatures are due to rise again.

Entrada Sandstone Wall and Moon

Arches National Park, UT

Water, ice, extreme temperatures, and underground salt movement are responsible for the sculptured rock landscape of Arches NP. The park sits atop an underground salt bed that is thousands of feet thick in places. It was deposited across the Colorado Plateau 300 million years ago when a sea in the region eventually evaporated. Over the millions of years, residues from floods, winds, and oceans that came and went, blanketed the salt bed with debris that eventually compressed as rock. Over time the salt bed shifted, fractured, liquified and repositioned itself, thrusting the rock layers upward as domes. With this shifting, surface erosion stripped off younger rock layers leaving the beautiful sandstone formations that are seen today in Arches. Most of the major formations in the park are salmon-colored Entrada Sandstone, in which most arches form, and buff-colored Navajo Sandstone. (Arches National Park Pamphlet)

Changde Rd. and W. Nanjing Rd., Shanghai

In the day or two following the demonstrations, Shanghai experienced a sharp drop in temperature and rain. On the 29th, between two heavy showers, the sky was dark and dreary, the streets were empty and sparsely populated by pedestrians, with police cars parked on many street corners and some streets filled with temporary recruits on duty to prevent new demonstrations, while Gucci's LED screens played their usual lavish and unrealistic advertisements.

The anger of the demonstrations and protests did not infect everyone. Just a short distance away from the blockade, youths steeped in consumerism were still relaxing and having fun. This is partly due to the blockade of information by the authorities, and partly due to the fact that thirty years of condoning and exploiting consumerism and suppressing social autonomy have created a large group of people who are indifferent to the fate of others.

On the night of 26 November 2022, a demonstration took place in Middle Wulumuqi (Urumqi) Road, Shanghai in memory of the victims of the fire in Wulumuqi (Urumqi), Xinjiang, the casualties of which were caused by the building being locked up as a result of absurd anti-epidemic measures which made it impossible for residents to escape. The police ended up arresting many of the demonstrators and loading three police buses:

On the evening of the 27th, a large area of the neighbourhood where the demonstration took place last night was suddenly blocked off, allowing only people to leave and not enter, perhaps to prevent further demonstrations from gathering there.. A large number of people gathered at the intersections of the blocked-off neighbourhoods, which gradually festered into a new demonstration.

Scotch Argus Butterfly:

Despite its name, the Scotch Argus is not only found in Scotland; it is also found at two sites in the north of England. A freshly emerged Scotch Argus is a sight to behold; the dark brown velvety upper sides making the butterfly appear almost jet black from a distance. The butterfly is unmistakable when seen basking with its wings open, when orange bands containing distinctive spots are revealed. This butterfly lives in well-defined colonies that are often very large.

Like the Mountain Ringlet, the ability of this butterfly to survive cool temperatures means that it was probably one of the first species to recolonise the British Isles after the last ice age, over 10,000 years ago. The English colonies, Arnside Knott and Smardale Gill, are both found in Westmorland. Colonies are much more numerous in Scotland, where this butterfly can be found in most of northern, western and southwest Scotland. This butterfly is absent from the lowlands of central Scotland, many of the western isles (including the Outer Hebrides), Orkney and Shetland.

Temperatures of slightly below 20 degrees and sunshine from the early morning till sunset. Just a fine Sunday and no doubt, spring has arrived in East-Westphalia. So it was logical that we took the day for a long hiking trip along the river Weser between Minden and Petershagen, continued the mill project with two more locations and enjoyed the sunset in Porta Westfalica along the river banks.

Temperatures here in the Driftless Region have been way below normal for the past week now and the weather feels more like January than December. Luckily, this little American goldfinch has a good insulating layer of feathers to keep it warm.

The contrast of temperature during the day makes the effects like this. It is still winter in the night and morning, and almost spring in the afternoon. These birch trees reminded me of old ladies ready to dance.

EN: On this November morning, the Bernina Pass showed its most beautiful side. After a few cold nights and some snowfall, the landscape was covered with a fine layer of white powder, but the lake was not yet frozen. Soon, however, the temperatures will be below zero long enough and the lake will slowly but surely freeze over completely.

For me, both the weather and the used vehicles were reason enough to make the long trip to Bernina Ospizio and walk along the lake. With the upcoming timetable change, the ABe 4/4 III will be withdrawn from the regional trains and will only be used in front of the tourist trains between St. Moritz and Tirano.

The original image is composed of 20 single shots and was assembled into a large panorama of about 200 million pixels using Adobe Photoshop.

A winter storm is an event in which wind coincides with varieties of precipitation that only occur at freezing temperatures, such as snow, mixed snow and rain, or freezing rain. In temperate continental climates, these storms are not necessarily restricted to the winter season, but may occur in the late autumn and early spring as well. A snowstorm with strong winds and other conditions meeting certain criteria is called a blizzard.

Winter storms are formed when moist air rises up into the atmosphere, creating low pressure near the ground and clouds up in the air. The air can also be pushed upwards by hills or large mountains. The upward motion is called lift. The moisture is collected by the wind from large bodies of water, such as a big lake or the ocean. If temperature is below freezing, 0 °C (32 °F), near the ground and up in the clouds, precipitation will fall as snow, ice, rain and snow mixed (sleet), ice pellets or even graupel (soft hail). Since cold air can not hold as much moisture as warm air, the total precipitation will be less than at higher temperature.

Suddenly the temperature dropped and the daylight seemed to swirl away into an indistinct, fog-like darkness. At the same time the air was torn apart by a frantic whirring sound, like a thousand grinding gear-wheels suffused by furious rushes of steam. Tiny arcs of purple lightning began to crackle through the aether as a great electrical wind twisted the air into some sort of strange, other-worldly vortex. As the very fabric of reality itself seemed to spin away into oblivion, I stared in horror at the centre of that churning maelstrom, where, piece by piece, the terrible apparition slowly materialised. Was this the vanguard of the evil Dr. Fulgurite's long threatened Clockwork Army? or something more terrifying even than that...

No. It was just a nice, friendly man in a steampunk costume that I chatted to during a visit to the Victorian Brickworks Museum at Bursledon. His name is Steve.
