For the Smile on Saturday group theme 'Three Droplets". Have a great weekend you wonderful folks out there. HSoS ;0)

These were moving with the waves and you can see how they fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. I will head down today to see if they have frozen together by now with these cold temperatures.

This is the road that crosses Death Valley, California. I stopped and got out of the car momentarily to take some images then back inside as the temperature was 103 Deg F.

It has been way to long since my last post here, I'll try to update my page more frequently in 2017. This picture was taken a few weeks ago, I had spent the day out photographing and on my way home I suddenly noticed the auroras dancing.

Being in a hurry to get to a somewhat decent spot and start photographing, I forgot my gloves in the car. Did not notice the temperature being minus 25 degrees C until I got back to the car again... #tobusytontice #frozenfingers

All matter, unless at the lowest temperature absolute, emits light (or, radiation). The hotter, the more so. As long as light is visible - and it does not matter where it comes from - we can use it for photography, generally speaking. In this specific case, however, the light source does not agree with my electronic shutter ("banding") so that the mechanical shutter was used. Fuji X-E3 plus Samyang tele lens at F5.6.

As temperatures drop in late autumn and winter, small mammals become less active. Less active prey make a lot less noise and are therefore much harder for Barn Owls to find and catch. Barn Owls are poorly insulated and need extra energy (food) during cold weather to make up for an increased loss of body heat. In winter then, food is generally harder to find at a time when Barn Owls need it most.

Yesterday mornings dispersing temperature inversion in the Hope Valley.

Tofu loves early mornings when the temperatures are nice and the birds are active. The birds are surprisingly careless around him but when he sneaks closer even the most careless bird decides to better fly off and disappear, especially if he licks his lips ...

Happy Fence Friday ! :)

Scotch Argus Butterfly:

Despite its name, the Scotch Argus is not only found in Scotland; it is also found at two sites in the north of England. A freshly emerged Scotch Argus is a sight to behold; the dark brown velvety upper sides making the butterfly appear almost jet black from a distance. The butterfly is unmistakable when seen basking with its wings open, when orange bands containing distinctive spots are revealed. This butterfly lives in well-defined colonies that are often very large.

Like the Mountain Ringlet, the ability of this butterfly to survive cool temperatures means that it was probably one of the first species to recolonise the British Isles after the last ice age, over 10,000 years ago. The English colonies, Arnside Knott and Smardale Gill, are both found in Westmorland. Colonies are much more numerous in Scotland, where this butterfly can be found in most of northern, western and southwest Scotland. This butterfly is absent from the lowlands of central Scotland, many of the western isles (including the Outer Hebrides), Orkney and Shetland.

"Arbutus unedo is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the Mediterranean Basin and Western Europe. The tree is well known for its fruits, the arbutus berry, which bear some resemblance to the strawberry, hence the common name strawberry tree. However, it is not closely related to true strawberries of the genus Fragaria"

A recipe:

Strawberry Tree Crumble Cake

For the Cake:

1/3 cup butter, room temperature

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup sour cream room temperature

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1 & 1/2 cups strawberry plant berries, sliced

 For the Crumble Topping:

3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup butter melted then cooled

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and liberally grease an approx. 8 x 8 sized pan.

Beat together butter and sugar on high speed for 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy.

Add in egg and mix until combined. Slowly add in flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda until just combined then add sour cream, vanilla extract and mix until combined – but don’t over-mix!

Evenly spread the cake batter in pan then top with sliced strawberry plant berries.

For the Crumble Topping:

Whisk together flour, both sugars, salt, and cinnamon until mixed. Drizzle butter over flour mixture and using a fork, stir together until crumbs form.

Sprinkle crumbs over strawberries. Bake cake for 35-40 minutes OR until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool for at least 20 minutes.

Temperatures have reached extreme lows in our area. In the early morning, frost covered everything. By the sunrise this made fantastic shots.

I was surprised to see this colorful red flat bark beetle out today since we've had temperatures well below freezing already, but I guess it found some protected place to hide then - helped out by anti-freeze produced in its body to survive the cold winter. These neat beetles are very flat when seen from the side and can squeeze into very tight cracks in a tree trunk. They live under loose bark on trees and eat small mites and spiders.

With temperatures soaring to near record highs around 60 F, a full 20+ degrees above normal, the weather was warm enough to keep my fingers nimble for casting a fly for trout. Rainbows like this one were willing biters and great fighters! They're all still swimming in Bohemian Creek to give other anglers an equivalent thrill.

This is a nice salmon colored boathouse with a comfortable looking bench. Why is the color salmon everywhere I look this year? Maybe I need to have my eyes checked. Maybe it is just tan with a little pink in it ... but that’s salmon, right?

Anyway, it was a nice day to be out in the boat. It was choppy but the temperature was so pleasant.

During a walk today, it seemed that I saw more bees busily gathering pollen.Perhaps some scientist were correct when they studied bees, finding the bees spent more time out of the hive foraging and stopped work later in the afternoon when the following day proved to be rainy rather than sunny. They seemed to be responding to cues such as changes in humidity, temperature and barometric pressure that preceded rainstorms.

Taken when we went on our bikes at the start of last month. This is partway up the north side of the Bwlch (the gap). The road goes up out stage left of the photo , but one can then see it carving its way across before doubling back up to again exit stage left .

We had such a wonderful time this day, as you can see the weather was good and the scenery up the top of the valleys is stunning in my opinion.

It’s meant to be dry today, but with the temperatures not getting above 5 degrees and the wind coming straight from the North Pole I don’t think that I’ll be outside on my bike at least!

Thanks for stopping HFF

temperature below -10°C (14F) makes the morning mist freezing to the trees and generates fantastic winter art!

The temperature reached 40c yesterday and overnight it didn't drop below 27c!

Today it is forecast to reach 36c! But it has actually hit 39c this afternoon!

Many thanks for your visits, kind comments and faves, very much appreciated.

Grabbing a nice fair weather day before winter weather starts showing up I was just out getting some fresh air. Here in the northeast US we have had to have had one of the mildest Autumns I have ever seen with many days into the mid 60's and several in the 70's in the last 30 days. Normally in November in my youth and pretty much most of the 20th century November is where you would get normally get close to freezing temperatures at night and cold damp biting winds during the day and around Thanksgiving weekend the first snow storms of the season would be hitting.

We have established that Moriarty's temperature is normal.

Golden Gardenia is a species of flowering small tree in the family Rubiaceae, native to Asia. It is a small tree, growing to a height of 2–4 m (6–12 ft) high with a spread of 1–2 m (3–6 ft). It prefers tropical conditions and will not tolerate temperatures below freezing. (Wikipedia)

We came across this lovely tree several times during our travels in Singapore. The bright colour and interesting shape of the flowers attracted my attention each time.

The temperatures during the day have dropped a little so we were able to take a trip out to the Forest. The little foal just couldn't stop trying to check out the cow. Every time she gave it a sniff, the cow turned round and the foal backed away, only to come back a minute later

Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

It has been a difficult week, an insane heatwave,

four days of temps above 105F, dense smoke choking out PDX from the Canadian fires, and to make matters worse,

i am fighting a terrible bout of bronchitis .

We escaped to the coast where the temperature reached 90F, unheard of in these parts, finally a real beach day in Oregon :D

stay cool my friends, happy sliderssunday!

It was still quite cold... This Hairy-footed Flower Bee (see Bernhard Jacobi commenting below), laden with pollen, brought to mind something I read recently about the body temperature of Bees. Scientists have discovered that the heavier their pollen load, the higher their body temperature rises. In warm weather that can lead to the heat exhaustion of our woolly friends. No fear of that yesterday in the Hortus where Hairy-footer was garnering nutrients from under the hood of Yellow Clary.

The trees are starting to drop their leaves as the temperatures have finally cooled. It has been such a harsh year for the trees in my yard due to the heat and drought. We have no fruit on our apple or plum tree this year because they blossomed before the bees arrived. The season is transitioning and I am too.

All of the leaves are beautiful no matter if they are torn, spotted, starting to wither, and aren't perfect. I need to remember to to appreciate and honor my body with my freckles, scars, bumps and all of the changes that come with age.

Appreciate whatever season you are in, I know it's hard but someday you'll look back and see that you have always been better than you thought.

Our temperature rose by more than 10C overnight (from 3C to 13.5C) & I think that the snowdrops appreciated it even more than I did!

So Liz & I paid a quick visit between the showers this afternoon to see the snowdrops at nearby Howick Hall. They were looking wonderful, perhaps at their peak, especially if the temperatures stay in the teens for the next few days.

Lake Achen (German: Achensee) is a lake north of Jenbach in Tyrol, Austria. It is the largest lake within the federal state, and has a maximal depth of 133 metres. Together with the Achen Valley it parts the Karwendel mountain range in the west from the Brandenberg Alps in the east.

Water quality is near drinking water, with sight up to 10 m below the surface. An alpine lake, water temperature is accordingly low, rarely above 20 °C.

Although they can swim immediately after hatching , chicks ( common loon ) spend a lot of time on their parents backs during the first few days of their lives .This helps them regulate their body temperature and protects them from underwater predators. Chicks are entirely dependent on their parents for food , and one adult usually stays on the surface of the water with

the chicks while the other catches fish and feeds them !

For Tofu the new year started just like the last one ended ... on the sofa. He likes it cozy and he likes it warm and winter is definitely too cold for his taste. I tried to lure him out into the garden today when we had some sunshine but with temperatures below 0 C Tofu returned to his blanket after about 5 minutes. :)

Posted for the Happy Caturday theme "brand-new photos of 2025".

Taken during a sunrise. Very cold temperatures but worth it to witness!

Continuing with the theme of fog, this Arbutus tree stands over the Salish Sea, and atop a small hill. It is slightly bent from the prevailing winds, and its red trunk shines brilliantly in the morning sunlight. However, with a palette of deep blue in the sky, and wondering fog, it looks somewhat stately.

We have been experiencing some unusual weather lately. But unlike so many places with fridgid temperatures, and knee deep snow, we have had a great deal of fog. While it is dangerous as a driver, it is a fun weather phenomena as a photographer.

It snowed on and off all day today; at times I couldn't see two meters ahead of me. We've had it unconventionally well this year that many were surprised at the above-average temperatures and little snow. Well, here it all comes in a package: snow, wind, snow, wind, and chill, chill, chill. We're expecting a -39 with wind-chill effects in some areas around us (Southwestern Ontario). Still, not complaints. The kids are having the time of their lives and are enjoying every inch of snow... Wish you all a warm weekend! Stay warm...

It's a hard pull through Culver, MN, where a stiff southbound grade and several curves have provided resistance to an Illinois transplant emanating the distinctive music from a choir of sixteen cylinders, 645 cubes apiece, singing in synchronous rhythm, the song of the Minnesota leg of the iron supply chain. Millions more marble-sized Minntac pellets of steaming taconite are headed towards Proctor where the winter suspension of the shipping season will force them into stockpiles. When warmer temperatures arrive in March, the pellets will be shipped across the Great Lakes to an eastern mill and transformed into another batch of USS product.

The warm temperatures of spring through fall bring many butterflies to Southern California gardens. Common to our gardens are the small orange/gold, brown and black butterflies known collectively as the Skippers. The Skippers, in the family Hesperiidae, are best viewed as sisters to the rest of the butterflies. Their characteristics place them somewhere between the butterflies and moths. Fiery Skippers are native to Southern California and beyond. Their range is limited by cold winters, so the year-round range is limited to warmer areas like the Southern United States, Southern California, the West Indies and Central America south to Argentina and Chile. But they commonly stray further north (and to higher elevations), creating yearly colonies even as far north as northern California, the lower Mid-west and southern New England. They are very common in western Los Angeles County gardens, fields, parks and other grassy places. (Info from Mother Nature's Backyard)

I would like to thank everyone for their views, faves and comments! They are truly appreciated... :-)

This is an old photo from my archives.

Snowy Owls are not fairing well and are decreasing in the arctic and are impacted by climate change. They are losing their habitat and their prey is reduced due to warmer temperatures causing ice and negatively impacting their main prey lemmings. It is always such a special treat to see one of these beautiful diurnal owls.

“Missing Michigan”

With the temperatures exceeding 100 degrees this week in Texas, I am definitely missing my home state of Michigan. I will be posting some of my favorite photographs I’ve taken over the years during trips home to visit family and friends in the Mitten State.

This particular photo was taken in May 2019 in Frankfort, Michigan on a foggy afternoon.

Taken this morning from Mam Tor. The forecast was right for once and a beautiful cloud inversion swamped the Hope valley. Really did struggle for composition so ended up isolating smaller scenes with a long lens
