French street artist Tilt added his now iconic Teeth Mural to the Christchurch landscape for the Spectrum Street Art Festival. You can find this enormous trio of red lipped mouths opposite the Christchurch Casino.

WCRC locos are rarely seen with anything other than passenger stock, and with so few Class 33s on the main line, the appearance of 'Crompton' 33029 'Glen Loy' on a Westbury to Woking infrastructure working on 9 January made a notable start to 2014. The load comprised a 'ZOA' crane sandwiched between two 'KFA' support wagons.

An oldie that I've never uploaded!! I wish I could group it where it belongs in the stream, about 4 months ago?

This Plump Sea Cucumber (Actinopyga obesa) is displaying its five anal teeth.

Smew are small, fish-eating ducks that breed around forest lakes in the taiga zone across northern Eurasia. They are a scarce and declining winter visitor to Britain (c125 individuals), and they are red listed because of a >50% decline. But the decline may be climate related with birds remaining in Europe for the winter, rather than a real decline in numbers. Sometimes a big freeze on the continent results in a larger influx of Smew to Britain.

You have heard the expression as rare as hen's teeth. Well how about duck teeth? This Smew appears to have a complete double set of dentures, top and bottom. But these aren't really teeth, they are serrations of the bill. The cutting edge of the bill is known as the tomium (plural tomia) and in some birds the tomia are serrated to help them catch fish, or snip through grass stems. No extant birds have proper teeth. Proper teeth emerge from the gums and are covered with hard enamel. Animals like lizards, crocodiles and mammals have proper teeth but somewhere during the evolution of birds they lost the ability to produce enameled teeth. Archaeopteryx from the Jurassic had teeth (around 150 million years ago), and fossils of "proper" birds from the Cretaceous (c145 - 66 million years ago) had teeth. But somewhere around 80 million years ago bird teeth disappeared, as they evolved ways round the need for teeth. For example, instead of chewing they grind their food in the muscular gizzard, sometimes swallowing grit to help with this. This shows the hooked bill and serrations on the bill amazingly well for the Smew's piscivorous diet. Alas, I have never managed to photograph the teeth on a wild Smew as they rarely allow close approach. This was a captive individual at Martin Mere but I thought it was too interesting not to post. Here's a photo of a wild drake Smew: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52637951691/in/photolist

note the crooked teeth in the left and right corners from the wisdom teeth that are growing in.there are also enamel filling in the front and in between fillings in the back of the bottom and top.

I had this up earlier, but i fixed it up a little...
