From Stand-up to Start-up: Growing Girl Techies and Entrepreneurs

There aren't enough women techs and CEOs. University professor and entrepreneur Luz Cristal has observed how hard it is to get girls involved in science and technology. Many of her female students feel intimidated or insufficiently qualified to participate. Girls need to learn, even before they enter school and are shown what girls ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ do, so they can succeed in these fields. Luz Cristal believes we need to give girls the confidence to believe they can do anything; 3D-print an engine, create software, or start a company. She teaches girls to think like entrepreneurs—by anticipating needs, innovating, creating, and taking calculated risks. When girls are exposed to entrepreneurial thinking, a profound change takes

place; they learn to problem solve, think critically and creatively, and become more confident in their ability to tackle challenges.

During NTEN's 2008 Non-profit Technology Conference a group of techies participated in several volunteer projects to bring technology to communities battered by the 2005 Katrina hurricane.

My group, comprised of consultants, non-profit workers, and Cisco Systems, traveled to a community center in St. Bernard Parrish to install wireless access points. St. Bernard Parrish was the hardest hit during the flood - only 6 houses were left standing out of 25,000 when the water rose 25 feet in 23 minutes.

It was an honor to be able to provide some help to this community and I'm grateful for the opportunity to talk with residents and keep the hope and momentum of positive work flowing.

FOR THE TECHIES

Camera: Nikon D90 (DSLR)

Lens: Standard 17 - 50mm Sigma lens

Aperture: f/22

Shutter Speed: 1/60 (sec)

ISO: 200

Format: High Quality RAW file

Stabilization: Tripod - gives that added security for unsteady hands like mine.

Converted and retouched using Camera RAW and Photoshop CS6. Black and white conversion created using manual black and white conversion techniques on Photoshop - takes longer but allows you so much control over every tone. Very much worth it if you know how.

Location: Sheepstor, Devon

All it took was an agitated flick of a tail to complete this stunningly magical, glowing miniature stallion. It took me sometime and many shuffles before I managed to gain the ponies trust, but it never once shifted away from its foal. That's pure motherly love for you.
