My mother has successfully read tea-leaves since she was a young girl. When I learned the name "tasseography" I thought it was a fascinating coincidence that the woman who taught my mother to read was called Grandma Tassel (her surname). Tasse is French for cup (and German, too I just learned). My mother also happens to be an excellent baker which meant I had lots of friends in highschool! LOL She reads the symbols formed by the leaves. This is a sample cup I drank without my mother's expert interpretation. I see a duck (increase in wealth), halfway down the cup. There are a few initial letters as well.

The cup is traditionally read from the top (present) to the future (bottom). Images that are seen are interpreted symbolically. Some readers read the negative space between the leaves and even the shadows. Apparently, tasseography symbolism differs from that of, say, dream symbols.

This katydid was captured by a black wasp to start a nest. It was left behind because the wasp could not use it because of its size. it has been on my balcony for the last 48 hours and it is still alive but it is paralyzed.

i am still strugling to find good light in our new place. It still feels kind of weird, only living a few weeks here, the place is spaciuos and nice but it is still just house not home. this is the light from probably my favourite window in our new place, it is large and has also a big windowsill, looks like a good place to take still life pictures and that you will see more of it.

Today is dedicated to magic window light. I wish I had one at my house...this was taken at my mom's.

My theme this week is a Russian china tea set (Bride's Maid Basket pattern) that I have had for years. I never actually use it for tea so decided to use it as my photo model. Three views starting from far to nearest focusing on color and form. This was in the "medium" view. I really like the curve of the handles with the gold detail against the deep blue of the pattern. Sugar bowl handle on right, teacup handles on left, and the teapot as the background using an LED light source to add to natural light from a north facing window.

it'd probably work better without the people

I did not have my tripod with me so this was handheld at 1/4 sec.

Don't be fooled, though- this is not a regular size teacup- it's a big flowerpot with these odd little succulents in it! I actually got a start of these plants almost 40 years ago, from my great grandmother!

The photo challenge for this week was Friendship. This teacup was given to me by a very dear friend. Every time I use it, I think of her.

Isn't this the cutest? Thank you so much Trudi!!

I enjoy a robust black with heavy cream, no sugar please. The tea cup pictured here belonged to my late mother-in-law. I am afraid I will break it, so I take my tea in a large red mug like a typical hillbilly American.

several visits to disneyland this year but the one thing i wanted to do was take photos of the park after the rain. but trying to do that is a lot harder than i thought. first it had to rain, which it rarely does in socal. then i had to not be lazy when it actually rained. then there was also the matter of me finding the energy to stay really late since the best shots would have to happen when the park was almost empty. then it had to happen on a sunday since that's the only day i can really visit the park because of work and the limitations of my annual pass. thankfully, we were blessed with a few days of rain here in socal and it happened to occur around the weekend. i think overall i was happy with the shots i got but i definitely want to visit the park when it rains again and see if i can improve on what i did.

So here we are with another pretty fun set up for todays shot, don't know if a Tea Taster is a real job or anything but was the best title I could come up with that is in line with the rest of the series. Well I'm actually not a very big tea person, don't drink that much of it but the misses loves it. She loves to buy loose leaf tea in particular and has gotten herself a small collection, I'm just showing off a bit of what she has since I couldn't fit all of it in this tray thing we have. Funny enough this tray and that tea set have been sitting around hidden away in my house for awhile, I found yesterday morning and figured I'd do some tea shot later on with the, but at the time wasn't sure how I'd set it up. Sadly we didn't have a set for the, honey, milk and sugar but thats fine. I also wanted to add in some lemon but we only had limes at home, could have just played with hue and saturation to make i look like a lemon but there was also no space left for it either. I normally have lemon with my tea, never put anything else and Elyse normally just drinks it straight. Oh yea if you want know what tea is on the tray just hover your mouse over the photo to see the notes, if you're on a mobile... Tough luck I guess.

Since it was pretty nice out today I ended using natural light for this photo, I set this shot up in my brothers room since it faces north. At first I was just using the fancy curtain but during the first test shot I realized I had to replace it with a white bed sheet since the patterns on the curtain didn't exactly look great when it was reflected on some of the items. Something I should have done on the first Strobist shot in this series. Fun part about this shot is that since this was the misses tea she helped set up and arrange the tea in this shot. Shop work as usual just required some clean up, colour work, and I made the reflection in the spoon look nicer, spoons are always the worst things to shoot. Oh yea also... Cats... Only full matching tea set we had at home, just had to show off the cups a bit, they're all hand painted so they're all a little different.

loving the new light blue teacup!

I just ran my first ever cupcake giveaway on my Facebook fanpage, and thought it was a great excuse to try out a design from my new Planet Cake book (with a few little modifications of my own!)

These were SOOO much work but I wanted to do something special seeing as it was my first giveaway. The teacups were a nightmare! Everything is edible, except for the teapot, which has a styro ball underneath.

White chocolate mud cupcakes, with white chocolate ganache and embossed fondant icing.

The lady who won then was the MOST adorable lady. She has admired my cakes for a while on Facebook, and always has the loveliest things to say. She sent me the sweetest email when she found out that she had won, and then she gave me a gift when I delivered them to her - I was blown away!

The photos aren't very good because my beloved camera is in for repair! :-(
