It says "Robert E. Lee was personally against secession [true] and slavery [total nonsense, he was a major slaveowner and a hard taskmaster; he even rented out his slaves and broke up families], but decided his duty was to fight for his home and the universal right of every people to self-determination."
Robert E. Lee was a good general and his postwar actions definitely promoted a peaceful end to the war and rapid national reconciliation. But his supposed anti-slavery views have been used for nearly 150 years to justify the "Lost Cause," neo-Confederate nonsense that "it really wasn't about slavery .... it was about defending state's rights .... the southerners took good care of their slaves ... the slaves were actually better off and very happy under slavery .... they were very loyal to their masters ...blah blah blah." Sad to see a statue made in the 21st century perpetuate this ridiculous tripe.
The seceding states made no secret of the fact that there was a single reason they were seceding -- to defend the "unique institution" of slavery. The idea that this was in favor of "the universal right of every people to self-determination" was a postwar invention of defeated Confederates, perpetuated by later generations of southerners who still weren't reconciled to civil rights laws. With all the historical research that has proven this point beyond a shadow of a doubt, it's sad to see the NPS allow this garbage on a statue within their park boundaries -- and to advertise the statue, and its message, on their web site.
This is a horrible precedent. Hey, if someone outbids the NPS for land within the authorized park boundaries, good for them. But then to allow them to put up their own a-historical monument with a patently untrue plaque, and later buy them out and incorporate the monument (and its bogus inscription) into the NPS inventory, is the worst sort of "money talks" management philosophy you will ever find. Shame on the NPS.

Last night, I was one of the Christian guests at a Seder, held by the Jewish congregation with whom I've been joining in interfaith work. It was an honor to take part, and even to be called forward to lead one of the readings.
In this collage, the book we used: "A Night of Questions: A Passover Haggadah." Next, a scallion, which we used to whip each other, symbolic of taskmasters whipping the Jews during the time of slavery. On the lower right, a louse -- my choice from the "bag of plagues" passed at our table. Finally, the head table, at which the rabbi stood, and from which each reader participated, in turn.
The Seder is, of course, about the story of Passover -- part of the Israelites' experience in the book of Exodus. It was presented with both an historical, physical meaning, and a deeper, spiritual significance.
The evening was fun, educational, spiritual, and valuable in creating a bond between folks of different faiths.

I was taking some shots of my DIY synthesizers and my 5 year old daughter wanted to take some shots, but the Helios 40 was too heavy, so I got my takumar 28mm for her and also brought up the " legs" so she could use the camera properly. She was quite the little taskmaster " put your hand on your chin, look over here, ok now move your hand, ok too dark, get closer to the flash etc etc"
I did all the Post processing, but she did everything else , cool

Of all of the images from this week's taskmaster, Michael Wolf, it was his 'Bastard Chairs' series that really appealed to me. I find the set to be more subtle, like the found sculptures of Richard Wentworth. This is the week I have struggled with the most in the competition. Walking around Belfast repeating the phrase 'human ingenuity that would otherwise go unnoticed' eventually led me to document this random find, but it was not easy.

Leslie's favorite motto for strategic planning was "Reach for the Future"
Leslie Guerrant Fowler excelled at planning and organization. Her special gift was an ability to transfer these skills to others while inspiring them to envision their own view for the future. These abilities defined her career as DeKalb County teacher, planner with the Georgia Department of Education and strategic planner with the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget. These experiences led to the creation of her consulting business in strategic planning and facilitation. "Leslie and I really got to see each other work for the first time in her consulting business," said Joe Fowler, husband and partner, "It was an incredible experience for me to watch this petite lady win the attention and respect of a room full of people." Leslie was a five-year breast cancer survivor and fought a courageous two-year battle against malignant melanoma. A celebration of Leslie's life will be held on Sunday, November 24 at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta, 75 Fourteenth Street, Atlanta, GA 30309. The service will begin promptly at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Leslie asked that donations be sent to: The Jekyll Island Foundation, 381 Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island, Georgia 31527, Attn: Susan Bundy (for restoration of Hollybourne Cottage). "Leslie was talented and skillfull in many arenas, including research, writing, facilitation, mediation and strategic planning," according to Ron Jackson, Director of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget. "Although her research and organization skills were exemplary, it was her commitment to strategic planning and facilitation where she may have shone her brightest. If you ever participated in a planning session with Leslie, you never forgot it. She was playful, serious, committed, feisty, a taskmaster, a friend, a master facilitator and a professionall-all in the same breath. In her work with many state agencies and organizations, Leslie made a substantially positive impact on state government and community agencies. The most important contribution of her work life though was the profound and positive effect she had on all the individuals whose lives she touched in her remarkable career." "Leslie loved to travel and particularly enjoyed the culture and cuisine wherever we traveled" according to Joe, her devoted husband. "The highlight of one of our trips to Bangkok, Thailand was taking a gourmet Thai cooking school course at the famous Oriental Hotel. Leslie also loved to bake and prepared a special pound cake from a recipe given to her by my grandmother. She was a gourmet cook and loved the preparation and presentation of food. We would get together on Friday nights with my mother, Bea Fowler and her good friend Dorothy Calhoun, to share recipes and cook southern meals." Leslie was born in Houston, Texas and was always a Texan first. however, she spent her adult life in Georgia and was attracted to the state's natural beauty, diversity and history. She was particularly drawn to the history and beauty of Jekyll Island and enjoyed working with the Jekyll Island management team. "In 1998, Leslie was the catalyst for creation of a bold and innovative strategic plan for Jekyll Island," according to Bill Donohue, executive director, Jekyll Island Authority. "She worked for three years with Jekyll Island and many of the concepts, ideas and innovations are an integral part of the framework of the Island Management and are cornerstones for the long-term stewardship of this great Georgia Treasure. Leslie's handprint was clearly made on Jekyll and the hearts of all those that work on the island." "What made Leslie so special was how she loved and cared about others," comments close friend, Betty Joiner. "As soon as you met Leslie, you sensed at once her feisty and indomitable spirit. Then, of course, her quick, infectious laugh; her optimistic approach to life. But it was her sheer goodness that came through-you knew immediately it was real and genuine. She made you feel like you mattered." Judy Bennett, high school/college classmate and life-long friend summed up Leslie this way. "If you asked who has made us feel good as a human being, that's easy, you never forget that person's name. And that is where Leslie comes in. She was a good person who has done many good things, has great accomplishments. However, she will always be rememberd by me not for what she did, but for how she made me feel." Survivors in addition to husband Joe are parents, Dr. Gordon Owen Guerrant and Jane Bush Guerrant; sisters, Libby Reser, Lori Jones and Lyn Guerrant; mother-in-law, Bernice P.
