So I got a little creative and made her a dress out of plastic bag... OF COURSE... from Target :P

The Prize and my topmost Target Bird on this trip. And not only mine, we were a handful birders in the group, fretting for this bird that eluded us for so long. But we got it, and got it GOOD, at the last possible moment (actually a little after, so we were extremely surprised and because of that even more happy!)

Photographed at Oued R'mal (in the middle of nowhere) in southeastern Morocko, Nov 23 2006.

PS This mythic place was situated on the road north from Erfoud to Midelt and you don't find it on a map. But if you go on the road 21 you will pass a bridge over a probably dry river-bead and a sign tells you "Oued R'mal" which means R'mal River. I have tried to find the approximate place on the flickr-map but it's rather inadequate in countries outside US and Europe.

Posted big.

I Dream Of Jeannie set. They had a few singles, Alice from Brady Bunch was a memorable one. I passed on them and now regret not picking it up. They weren’t even on shelves when I went to Target yesterday.

Belle has been fully deboxed. She is free standing.

I got this doll from my local Target store. She is made by Jakks Pacific, and is exclusively sold by Target. Currently she is sold out online, but is available in stores. She costs $59.99.

She is 38 inches tall, has a yellow gown with gold glitter, a brooch with an image of Belle, yellow shoes, and long curly dark brown hair. The glitter does shed easily, so I had to brush it off the doll and my hands before taking photos. She can free stand fairly stably. She has posable head, arms and legs, with pivot jointed neck, shoulders and hips. She has a large head, with very large hazel eyes, full pink lips in a closed mouth smile, and is very pretty. I intend to get a kid's Belle costume to replace the dress soon.

She joins my other 38 inch Disney Princess dolls by Jakks Pacific, that were called either My Size or Fairytale Friend dolls. I have Rapunzel, Ariel, Cinderella, Anna, Elsa, and now Belle.

Euro Target store in Atlanta GA. Shot with Holga using Agfa Portrait 160 film.

This store opened in October, 2007, and replaced a 1967 Gemco/Target store. The original store closed forever on January 6, 2007. It was quickly demolished and rebuilt from the ground up with a two-level, 143,000 sq ft store with parking on the ground level and the store above it. The only remnant of Gemco that remains is the overhead sign in the parking lot.

Alberta is investing $10 million into targeted serology testing that will help track the spread of COVID-19 across the province.

Serology testing is used to detect the presence of antibodies in a person’s blood, indicating that a person has been exposed to the COVID-19 virus in the past. This is different from the robust polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing already available to all Albertans, which is the most effective way to test if anyone currently has the virus.

Alberta Health is investing in four voluntary public health studies, which will serologically test specific groups of Albertans for the virus. Alberta Health Services (AHS) will also make serology testing available for specific clinical purposes where testing can inform treatment decisions.

Alberta is the first province in Canada to make this targeted serology testing available.

“We committed to investing in expanding COVID-19 testing as part of Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy. Investing in these focused studies of select groups will help us get a better sense of the situation in Alberta and learn more about the virus. The more we know about how COVID-19 is spreading, the better we can protect Albertans.” said Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health, during a news teleconference from Edmonton on June 23, 2020.

“We anticipate that there are people in the province who have been infected with COVID-19 and either were not tested, or were unaware that they had the virus. Investing in these representative public health studies will help us understand what percentage of Albertans have a history of infection, and how to improve our health response.” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health.

The $10-million investment will fund two pediatric studies that will measure COVID-19 antibody prevalence among groups of Calgary and Edmonton children until 2022. A third study will test samples from blood collected for other purposes across the province, and a fourth will regularly test select Albertans over the age of 45 to help officials better estimate the number of people exposed to COVID-19.

By investing in serology studies, Alberta will be able to better estimate the number of people who have previously contracted COVID-19 and learn about how the virus is spreading over time.

As well, Alberta Precision Laboratories will offer serology testing for specific clinical purposes and funded population-level serology research studies.

Orignal GEMCO Department Store sign that is still being used by Target. Target in early 2007 closed this store for major renovations. They had covered this sign until recently (June 2007). There are a pair of these signs along the border of this store. This is the Target in Signal Hill/Long Beach area on Atlantic in California. This sign is along the 405 Freeway.

PPSOP - Art of Food Photography, Assignment Three, Part B: Shoot two or three subjects with a single, small light source and reflector. Really try to show off the texture of your subject. Part C:Shoot the same subjects from part B, adding a second, overhead light source along with your reflector. Final Submission.

F/8, 1/250s. 105mm Nikkor Micro Lens on studio stand.

As the Assignment called for two shots, I tried both – with the addition of ND Gel to the Grid (small light source) and decided the sandwich shot with the soft box fill was the strongest of the two. The softlight coming from above filled in the shadows to lower the contrast. The ND Gel was noticeably softer, I am glad I tried this experiment.

The issue I have with the ND was that it reduced the intensity of the light leaving me with a maximum f-stop of f/8. Due to the width of sandwich, I think I would have preferred to use a higher wattage light to enable me to stop down with the ND and obtain greater DoF.

My time was crunched, so I only had one (rushed) go at this… Further studies are in my future, to be sure.

I can surmise that higher wattage will lead to quicker degradation of the sandwich fillings, so I’d best have a few on hand!

Setup for the shot: Lowe’s tileboard tabletop with subject placed on white paper. Old-fashioned soda bottle and chips brought in as props. 30° grid set on light, placed at 210° from subject, up high just skimming top of bread and bouncing off reflector board about 45-60° camera right. Medium soft box placed on boom over top of subject.

Read my full review of the 2007 Ford Ranger FX4 Off-Road Pickup Truck on Epinions

While it might be overkill for what some truck drivers need, if you are looking for a smaller sized, four-wheel drive truck that offers off-road features along with a roomy cab and good towing abilities, then Ford’s 2007 Ranger FX4 Off-Road pick-up truck might just be what you are looking for.

The FX4 line of Ford Trucks is the “off-road” design. It generally features trucks with bigger tires, off-road suspension and a number of other standard features that differentiate it from other trucks in their line. Basically, the truck is more or less designed with off-road travel in mind and while the vast majority of my travel is on roads, it was a feature that interested me, as I didn’t want to have a truck that I wouldn’t be able to get off-road when I needed to.

Wounded Vietnam veteran offers troops a message of hope

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – When Marine Lance Cpl. Anthony Brocato went to see inspirational speaker Dave Roever Aug. 1 at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, the mortuary affairs specialist from Maryland hoped the disfigured Vietnam veteran would offer words of hope to him.

Brocato joined roughly 1,500 troops – many who thought they were simply there to attend run-of-the-mill suicide awareness training. But Roever’s story – suffering horrible burns from a phosphorus grenade while serving on a Navy patrol boat in Vietnam and how he recovered – was told with a mix of humor, wit and subtle seriousness. It kept the crowd laughing, while on the verge of crying.

“It helped out a lot because I just lost a friend to suicide two months ago,” said Brocato, 19, of Bel Air, Md., a Marine reservist training at Landstuhl.

Roever, 65, has spent the past decade travelling the globe to spread his message, “never lose hope.” In Vietnam, Roever was burned beyond recognition when a phosphorous grenade exploded in his hands. In the hospital, he attempted suicide by removing a tube that he thought kept him alive, Roever told the crowd.

“It was my best failure in life, when I pulled the wrong tube out,” Roever said. “I got hungry instead of dead.”

While crowds roared with laughter, Roever insists he’s not a joker. Everything he discusses is a human experience that he went through, he said.

“I take real life experience and choose to look at through the eyes of hope and laughter,” Roever said. “It’s all in how you look at life. It’s a choice.”

During late-July, Roever spoke to troops at events in U.S. Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg in Heidelberg and U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder. The speaking series was organized by Lisa Velez, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s suicide prevention program manager.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Soldiers with the summer months yielding the highest levels of attempts and completions,” Velez said, adding that collaborating with speakers like Roever is key to promoting awareness in military communities.

While at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, Roever also met with injured service members at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

“I walk in their room and I’m on holy ground. It’s a hallowed sanctuary – I treat it like that. Because there lays a sacrifice for the cause of freedom,” Roever said. “I’ll do everything in my power to see them returned to the best life can give them and the best they can give to life.”

Brocato’s friend was just 18. He was also headed into the Marines, Brocato said. Instead, he fought with his girlfriend and committed suicide. Over the past weeks, Brocato felt himself in a slump over the loss of his friend.

After the crowds left, Brocato approached Roever, offering a rubber wristband – a memorial token with his fallen friend’s name and motocross number. Roever slipped it on and embraced Brocato.

“My buddy lost hope,” Brocato told Roever. “But I want to thank you for giving me hope. I will never lose hope and never give up. It’s not an option.”
