March commemorates Korean War

By Cpl. Han, Jae-ho

CAMP HUMPHREYS — Republic of Korea Army officers joined Korean Augmentation to the United States Army Soldiers (KATUSAs) for a rucksack march in commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War here on June 25.

“What we did today is nothing compared to what our predecessors had to go through during the Korean War,” said Cpl. Oh, Hyeon-myeong of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, United States Army Garrison Humphreys. “What they did during the Korean War changed history and the way we live today. This rucksack march allowed us to think about war veterans who marched longer distances with heavier rucksacks, ready to shed blood for their country.”

The Korean War was fought between the Republic of Korea, supported primarily by the U.S., and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, supported by the China and the Soviet Union. It began June 25, 1950, resulting in the division of peninsula that continues today. During the Korean War, the United States provided approximately 300,000 Soldiers to the effort.

The KATUSA program began in July 1950, during the Korean War, to support the alliance between the armed forces of the Republic of Korea and the United States, and the program still continues today. The KATUSA program provides the United States Army with Korean-speaking Soldiers who can speak fluent English, allowing greater military functionality and maneuverability throughout the Korean peninsula.

“This rucksack march was conducted to inherit the will of fallen patriots and pledge the punishment of enemy provocation,” said Major Lim, Dae Chon, ROKA Support Group Area III commander. “North Korea is still threatening the peace on the Korean peninsula with various provocations, and ROK Forces will continue to solidify the sense of national security and self-reliant defense potential.”

CAMP HUMPHREYS — Dog lovers here gathered for Pet Fest 2012 at the Humphreys Veterinary Clinic May 5. The event featured the paws walk, a pet show, face painting, an agility course, pet photos, informational booths, a military working dog demonstration and an awards ceremony.

“We are really happy with the turnout and excited to be a part of the Camp Humphreys community,” said Capt. Amy Carlson, officer in charge at the Humphreys vet clinic. “We have many events such as face painting, doggy treats and grooming. Humphreys has been great to us and we have received lots of support. We look forward to continuing events like this today.”

The American Red Cross participated in the event to offer knowledge about pet first aid, while the Osan Animal Shelter provided information on pet adoptions.

The dog show had categories such as owner/pet lookalike, best dressed, best pet trick and best in show. Rocko, owned by Blair Bogle, was the biggest winner of the day, winning first prizes in owner/pet lookalike and best in show categories.

“This is a great opportunity to hang out with dog lovers and people with the same hobbies,” said pet owner Tom Stout. “This event also provided information for people who are PCS’ing and have pets with them. This was a fun day.”

Village Baram, Block Namkum, District Ranchi, Jharkhand, India..A pregnant woman prepares to measure her weight during the counseling on health and nutrition at Anganwadi centre in Namkum. Anganwadi worker in every targeted village teams up with a small group of local resource people who are then given a basic training in nutrition, childcare and hygiene. Once trained, the team visits pregnant women and mothers of newborns in their homes to educate them about safe delivery, breastfeeding, immunisation, and other essential care practices during pregnancy and early childhood UNICEF is prioritizing reducing the high malnutrition and child mortality rates, and reaching out to millions of families in Jharkhand to address these concerns. The Dular strategy, which trains village women to counsel new mothers about breastfeeding and proper nutrition, is a successful approach that is already expected to prevent about one quarter of newborn deaths and save the lives of thousands of older babies and children. The Dular initiative is of particular importance to tribal children who are most vulnerable to disease, malnutrition and education disparities, as prejudice, isolation and misunderstanding make it difficult for these families to access services. CAMP HUMPHREYS - Matthew C. Perry High School of Iwakuni, Japan, won the 2012 Far East Boys' Division 2 Soccer Championship here, going 6-0-1 in the

eight-team, double elimination tournament.

Perry began by defeating Daegu, 3-1, then topped E.J. King, 4-0. This was followed by a 2-2 tie with Yongsan International School of Seoul. Perry then blanked Zama, 7-0, nipped Osan, 4-3, downed YISS again, 2-1, then clinched the title with another 2-1 win over YISS, this time on penalty kicks.

The tournament's top scorer was Tyrone Boylan, from Osan, with 10 goals. Gaku Lange, from Perry, was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Individual award winners also included Shu Ikeda from YISS, who won the best goalkeeper award; Roland Umoru, also from YISS, who won the best offensive player award; and Japeth Devries, from International Christain School, won

best defensive player.

"Some great soccer was played during this tournament," said Shawn Knudsen, tournament director. "Coaches spent lots of time preparing for this tournament and there was not a better place than Camp Humphreys to hold a soccer tournament."

Making the all-tournament team were: Yuta Flemming, Alex Barker, Gaku Lange, Tyler Apple and Yasuki Milsop from Perry; Roland Umoru, Jeong Min Huh, Shu Ikeda, Japeth Devries and Mickey Kumar from YISS; Jacob Ives from Osan; Darius Wyche from Daegu; Ryan Walls from Zama; Kento Reynolds from EJ King; and Sean Gammel from Edgren.

"I feel like crying because I am so happy," said Mark Lange, Perry coach. "We are one of the smallest schools in the Pacific with only 60 boys, but we believed that we could win and we did. The power of positive thinking, mind and heart all came together today and we will remember today for the rest of our lives. Daegu was a heavy favorite to win this tournament and they beat us four times last year, but we came out victorious this year.

Belle has been fully deboxed. She is free standing.

I got this doll from my local Target store. She is made by Jakks Pacific, and is exclusively sold by Target. Currently she is sold out online, but is available in stores. She costs $59.99.

She is 38 inches tall, has a yellow gown with gold glitter, a brooch with an image of Belle, yellow shoes, and long curly dark brown hair. The glitter does shed easily, so I had to brush it off the doll and my hands before taking photos. She can free stand fairly stably. She has posable head, arms and legs, with pivot jointed neck, shoulders and hips. She has a large head, with very large hazel eyes, full pink lips in a closed mouth smile, and is very pretty. I intend to get a kid's Belle costume to replace the dress soon.

She joins my other 38 inch Disney Princess dolls by Jakks Pacific, that were called either My Size or Fairytale Friend dolls. I have Rapunzel, Ariel, Cinderella, Anna, Elsa, and now Belle.

Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Blondie appeared live, in concert at Somerset House in London, on the night of Wednesday, July 13, 2011. Debs and I were there!

Gig review from The Independent, Monday, July 18, 2011

The audience for tonight's gig includes many who were not even born when the New York band adopted their Blondie moniker in 1975, but everyone knows all of the words anyway.

In the opulent Somerset House courtyard, Debbie Harry's group perform with the same swagger that propelled them to stardom, reminding or revealing to all how they embedded themselves in our musical psyche.

The initial reception is deafening, but the first few tracks generate little momentum, greeted with respectful applause rather than outright euphoria. This being an outdoor gig in the heart of London, the speakers are turned down frustratingly low, and though we all eventually adjust, there's an odd stasis during the opening numbers as a result.

One person not lacking crowd-rousing charisma is Harry. Sashaying across the stage to an ever-increasing chorus of cheers, she retains an enigmatic, alluring aura that no one appears able to resist. By the time they close with "Heart of Glass", she's worked the crowd into a frenzy, and they erupt loudly enough to flout local noise pollution laws.

Harry's stage presence has not diminished, her voice, the heartbeat of the band's best tracks, shifting from communicative to powerful and back again. Even though she's afforded laudable support by Clem Burke's tireless drumming, and Chris Klein and Tommy Kessler's searing guitar solos, it's the vocals that will linger in everyone's minds longest, whether adding punch to "One Way or Another" or soaring through the standout "Maria".

Indeed, Blondie as a whole possess a rare gift for smoothly switching stylistic gears; the diversity of their back catalogue is often overlooked, but tonight their set encompasses a wealth of genres, all bathed in the band's trademark aloof cool. The lo-fi growls of "Atomic" are balanced with the poppier strains of "Sunday Girl", while proto-rap hit "Rapture" bounces off an irrepressible backbeat.

Equally apparent as they storm through their set is the impressive depth in quality of their music. Everyone sings joyously along to the choruses of "Call Me" and "Hanging on the Telephone", the melodies and lyrics as indelible to the crowd as birthmarks, and each time Harry asks the audience to lend their voices, she's met with a volley of responses.

It's almost 40 years since Blondie first formed and, after tonight, everyone's hoping for 40 more.

Here's Blondie's Setlist from the Paradiso in Amsterdam on July 14, 2011 - I think it mirrors the Someset House list:

1. Union City Blue

2. Dreaming

3. Atomic

4. D-Day

5. Hanging on the Telephone

6. Call Me

7. Love Doesn't Frighten Me

11. Sunday Girl

12. China Shoes

13. Wipe Off My Sweat

14. Horizontal Twist

15. Mother

16. Rapture

17. One Way or Another

19. Rip Her to Shreds

20. Heart of Glass

CAMP HUMPHREYS – “Kimjang” is an event where kimchi, the ubiquitous food in Korean cuisine, is made in preparation for winter. However, making kimchi is a very labor-intensive process so many neighbors divide up the different parts of this process and then make a huge batch for the entire village. In the past, Kimjang was a way to survive the harsh winters and build ties with neighbors.

The Camp Humphreys Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program and the Mannam Volunteer Association worked together to organize a Kimjang event, Dec. 1, for those who wanted to volunteer making and giving away kimchi.

More than 30 Soldiers and civilians of Humphreys Community took part and experienced making kimchi and shared it with the elderly and underprivileged people of Gaemi Maeul, located on the northwest slope of Mount Inwangsan, in Hongje-dong, Seoul.

“The purpose of our Kimjang event was to share the meaning of love and the true meaning of helping, giving, and sharing,” said Charleen Hull, Mannam’s South Branch team leader. “We wanted to share with the people of Gaemi Village, who are financially struggling and unable to support themselves due to being elderly or physically disabled. Many of the elders live alone and go to the hospital every day. They are unable to cook for themselves and too proud to ask for help.”

Specialist Kareen K. Medeiros, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys and who serves as the Camp Humphreys BOSS President, said “The BOSS program decided to get together with Mannam for this project because I thought it would be a good thing for some of our military personnel to get involved with the Korean community and to give back. In my opinion it (the Kimjang event) is very important. We are here overseas, in a host country and having to serve with the Korean military. I feel it is a wonderful opportunity for our single Soldiers to come and experience what everyday living is like here in Korea and what better way to do that than to see some of the traditions themselves.”

Private Tony Harrington, assigned to 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, came to the event with his friends and enjoyed making kimchi for the very first time.

“The reason I came here is because I met a lot of good friends during the ‘Troops for Trash’ and they talked me into coming and making kimchi,” said Harrington. “This is my first time in Korea. I have only been here for (about a ) month and a half and I find it quite fine. During my stay here I try to learn more about this country and this is my first experience with kimchi. It is worth a try. So I’m having fun and enjoying making it.”

Confederate soldiers used this tailor shop sign for target practice while occupying Gettysburg. The metal sign shows evidence of three .58 or .69 caliber bullets and at least one smaller ball. The latter is possibly a .32 caliber buck shot from a buck and ball load from a smoothbore musket. Buck and ball was made up of 3 large buckshot bound on top of a .69-caliber smoothbore musket ball and was encased in a paper cartridge. The .69 caliber musket (most often found in Confederate ranks, but not preferred) was an inaccurate weapon that could be converted to good use at close range with this load. While innacurate, the spread of three small buck shot and one large ball increased the likelyhood of a hit, especially at close range.

Adjusted brightness and contrast to bring out the sky, and removed the Date stamp. Might have got a bit of flare too, on this end of the house.
