Originally opened in 1978 as College Hills Mall. Original anchors were Carson's, Montgomery Wards, and Target. Carson's sold its store to Von Mar in 1989 because of being purchased by Bergner's. Montgomery Wards closed in 1997 and was replaced by Hobby Lobby. The mall was torn down in 2005 and converted into an open air lifestyle center.
This Target store was built in 1987 on an out-parcel behind the Southland Center mall Target (previously called Dayton-Hudson) once owned the mall itself.
Southland Center in Taylor, MI was opened in 1970. The mall was designed by Victor Gruen for the Dayton-Hudson Corporation (now Target).
The mall was originally anchored by a Hudson's department store. Later in the 1970s JCPenney was added. Mervyn's (now demolished for a new CineMark muliti-plex) and a Target (on an out-parcel) were added in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s a food court with a massive atrium was added. Hudson's later re-branded as Marshall Field's and again as Macy's in the 2000s. In 2006 Mervyn's left Michigan and Best Buy replaced the food court. Much of the food court was demolished for Best Buy but the atrium still exists in the middle of the store.
Since Dayton-Hudson sold off their properties and department stores, this mall is now owned by Rouse Properties. As of 2016, the mall recently got an H&M store and a CineMark cinema multiplex is being built on the old Mervyn's site. The CineMark looks like it is being built in the "NextGen" design and should be open later in 2016. I did notice a couple minor vacancies but they didn't appear like they were empty for too long. Overall, this mall seems to be doing pretty well.

My wife wearing her favorite brown thong sandals. Couldn't help but stalk her beautiful toes while we shopped.
This is why I love shopping at Target... lots of registers, with lots of people working those registers... and they move fairly quickly! I get in, get my stuff, and checkout quickly.
This is the primary core of business. Allow the customer to get what they want (product or service) and easily hand over their money. When you make it hard for people to give you money, they grow frustrated. Which is also why I hate shopping at WalMart. WalMart also has a bunch of registers yet they dont' have that many people working them... and they move slowly. I've never been to Walmart where I've not experienced a long line and wait. They should make it easy for me to give them my money, yet it is more profitable for them to hire fewer employees and thus, make me wait.
So.... what does this mean? It means I'm frustrated with WalMart, and I don't go there anymore. I shop at Target because they don't make me frustrated. To paraphrase, "No one goes to WalMart anymore - it's too crowded."

This Target store opened on October 11th, 1987, the same day as several other Detroit Area Target stores. This was Target store number 284 and it was 101,379 square feet. Target relocated a couple miles to a new store, store number 2178, in 2009. The new store was a prototype Target store built at a high traffic intersection and above the parking lot. The newer Target is considerably larger than the first store, at 145,712 square feet.
Since this store closed in 2009, a charter school moved into most of the building. However, the former Target entrance is still intact and the label-scar is still clear.
Summit West and Summit North shopping centers were built as part of the Summit Place Mall Complex. The Summit Place Mall opened as the Pontiac Mall in 1963. In addition to the 1,500,000 square foot mall, two shopping centers were built around the mall as part of the complex.
Summit West was built first. The first part, featuring a Chatham food store was built in 1972. The second part featuring Target was built in 1987. The third part featuring Farmer Jack was built in 1989. Pace Membership Warehouse was built in 1991.
Summit North was built in 1994/1995 with Builders Square (relocated from a smaller store built in 1990 at Oakland Pointe across the street), Best Buy, and Gander Mountain.

This is the view when entering the store from Chestnut Street. A quite small apparel section to the right; Health and Beauty to the left; Starbucks and market/pantry straight ahead.

About 7 blocks away from the Chestnut West Target Flex is this second Target Flex. Both stores were opened within the last year. They fill a void left downtown since the Big Kmart (former Clover) closed in the Gallery Mall in 2014.
This 19,000 sq. ft. store is located all on one level and fits a CVS pharmacy, a Starbucks and the normal Target Flex departments--Market, Apparel, Health & Beauty, Home, Baby and Tech (electronics). Like all the Target Flex stores, "order pickup" is touted on the outside of the building.

This location opened on March 9th, 1997 as a Target Greatland. It was renovated and expanded in summer 2007 and was renovated again in spring 2020.

A rarer two level Target store in University Heights.
The University Square shopping center was opened in 2003. Today the shopping center has Target, Macy's and T.J. Maxx / Homegoods (Target and Macy's own the property their stores are on). University Square once featured a Tops grocery store on the bottom level but it closed just a year later in 2006 when Tops closed all their Ohio locations. Retailers such as Jo-Ann Fabrics, Foot Locker, Famous Footwear, and Pier 1 Imports have all either closed or relocated elsewhere. Some spaces in the shopping center were never filled to begin with. Currently (late 2016), only one non-anchor store, T.J. Maxx / Homegoods, remains at University Square, but plans to move to nearby Oakwood Commons. Applebee's also still has a restaurant in the shopping center. Today, there are talks about possible mixed-use redevelopment plans for University Square
The shopping center has five levels of parking and staggered store levels. 1- Access to Macy's and Applebee's, 2- Empty Tops Friendly Market level, 3- Access to Macy's, T.J. Maxx / Homegoods, and Target, 4- just for parking, 5- second level of Target.

Here we are revisiting the Chantilly Target, originally built as a Greatland-type store in 2003.
Since my previous visit in 2015, the store has gained a Starbucks (replacing the photo department) along with other remodels in line with several area locations. More photos of the store will be coming shortly, so stay tuned!
10301 New Guinea Rd, Fairfax, VA 22032
Opening on October 8, 1997 as part of Target's continued expansion efforts (especially in the area), this was a typical smaller store of the time. The store has a colonial-like front, different from those at the time with a curvy modern look. Updates the store received in the mid-2000s included a P04 remodel (red look, bullseye/curve neon) and a full Pizza Hut Express café (minus Starbucks). This store was remodeled again around 2010 for PFresh grocery, and once more in 2015 solely with the new electronics department. While rather small, I find this store unique for its nestled location and convenience with many major Target features.
This 145,712 square foot Target prototype store was opened on October 8, 2008. The first level is the store's parking lot and the second level is the store itself. Another nearby Target store closed in 2011. A car sales lot was previously located here.

This Target store was built in 1996 and later was given a p-fresh remodel before closing its doors on February 1st, 2015.
The Northland Center was opened in March 1954 and will close in April 2015. The shopping center was designed by Victor Gruen and developed by the J.L.Hudson Company. Northland Center was the largest shopping center in America when it opened and had the largest department store branch in the world. In 1974, the shopping center was enclosed plus JCPenney, and Montgomery Ward were added as anchors. MainStreet / Kohl's and Target were later anchor stores as well. Kohl's closed 1994, Montgomery Ward closed 1998, JCPenney closed 1999, Target closed 2015 (February 1st), and Macy's closed 2015 (March 22nd).
