The Siren of the Seas is a fickle creature: benevolent or spiteful, she can bestow a safe passage & a bountiful catch, or provoke storms & shipwrecks. Sailors have long cast gifts of flowers, food or trinkets into the sea in exchange for good fortune. Talisman – a delicately dry-hopped & golden-hued ale with its tropical & citrusy aroma – may be just the thing to encourage the Siren’s blessing.

I have been collecting things for this shot since the beginning of October. It just didn't come together like I envisioned. I wish the glow from the opened glowsticks I poured into the cauldron had shown up better. It is what it is I suppose. They can't all be masterpieces.

Particularmente me parece canela fina...

The maneki-neko (Japanese: 招き猫, literally "beckoning cat") is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman) which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. In modern times, they are usually made of ceramic or plastic. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed in—often at the entrance of—shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses.

Maneki-neko comes in different colours, styles and degrees of ornateness. Common colours are white, black, gold and sometimes red.

It is also sometimes called the "Chinese lucky cat" due to its popularity among Chinese merchants.

This is just a gold-painted decoration on an elegant wrought iron fence. But somehow, in beautiful late-afternoon October light, it looks like it could be some kind of talisman (a magical object providing protection against ill will, or the supernatural.) I suppose the deep shadow background and the angle at which I took the photo are part of the effect.

Location: Front porch fence, The Villa at Wenken Park, Riehen BS Switzerland.

In my album: Dan's Other Metal.
