The Canterbury Tales (Prologue)
A ruby-crowned kinglet, usually found in northern North America, was far south for the winter.
DeKalb County (Northlake), Georgia, USA.

📷 Photographer's notes:
☞ Thank you to Flickr-er Bárbol who confirmed my guess that this handsome fellow was indeed a ruby-crowned kinglet.
☞ However, there appears to be some dispute about its taxonomy. Whereas Bárbol — and my 2008 edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern North America— classifies the species as Regulus calendula, the American Ornithological Society reclassified it as Corthylio calendulain 2021.

▶ Rejection:
On 22 March 2025, the administrator for the Flickr group "GEORGIA, THE PEACH STATE" rejected this photo for NOT displaying "scenic beauty of the State of Georgia, USA." Denying the kinglet its migratory presence in the state is gaslighting nonsense.

"Once in awhile, in the middle of ordinary life, God gives us a fairy tale. ~ Unknown.
The historic Magnolia Plantation is like walking through a fairy tale After visiting the enchanted Plantation the fall of 2014, I knew I wanted to see these beautiful gardens in full bloom. Unfortunately a couple of days before my visit, mother nature decided to throw a curve ball, laying down a killing two day freeze. It was certainly disappointing to see the azaleas limp and hanging on the bushes. Once I overcame the disheartenment, I realized that the dying blooms actually added to the charm of this almost two century year old plantation.
I was in the AWD`(Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen) last week. I just love that area.
Originally meant as a basin to collect drinking water for the big cities surrounding it, it is riddled with canals, small forests and lots of sand dunes.
It is beautiful in every season but autumn is my favorite.
The area is inhabited by many Fallow Deer. (too many, some people think). As of November large numbers of them will be shot to bring the numbers down.
I was in the area at sunrise. As the sun rose, the fog started rising over the canals. And when there is a Fallow Deer jumping over that canal with the sun as back light, it really seems like it's part of a fairy tale.

In a world of dragons, mermaids, ghosts, and magic,
Anything can happen.
But there is fire within the scorpion love story.
She waits in patience
Crawls just slightly
Raises her tail with defense
And stings when she is hurt.
One dares not scorch the soul of a scorpion
For one day the prickle shall burn
Where your wound will never heal
Wishing you never poured harm
Toward any of her balanced ways.

The Pitstone Windmill, at Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire has stood here since 1627. It closed in 1894 when it was badly damaged in a storm. It is now fully operational again having being restored by a group of voluntary enthusiasts. A wonderful place to visit so if your ever that way do go and see it Its one of those rare somewhat hidden treasures!

The mountain town of Heiligenblut, Austria. We drove through here on our way from Salzburg to Lienz; it was just before tourist season so the whole town was amazingly peaceful. A little bit about the area:
Situated in the high-Alpine region of the Hohe Tauern mountain range at 1,288 meters, Heiligenblut is located at the foot of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, and the Pasterze Glacier. The Gothic pilgrimage church of Saint Vinzenz, with its needle spire, was built between 1460-1491 and contains a relic of Christ’s Holy Blood. According to legend the relic, which is kept in a sacrament house, was brought there in 914 from Constantinople by the Danish knight Briccius. On his way home he was buried by an avalanche and his corpse was found where three ears of wheat broke through the snow. The church also houses a late-Gothic winged altarpiece from 1520, and a crypt and tomb containing the remains of Briccius.
Tighter view of the church here:

Mein Wald, mein Leben
Ich sah den Wald im Sonnenglanz,
Vom Abendrot beleuchtet,
Belebt von düstrer Nebel Tanz,
Vom Morgentau befeuchtet:
Stets blieb er ernst, stets blieb er schön,
Und stets mußt' ich ihn lieben.
Die Freud' an ihm bleibt mir besteh'n,
Die andern all zerstieben.
Ich sah den Wald im Sturmgebraus,
Vom Winter tief umnachtet,
Die Tannen sein in wirrem Graus,
Vom Nord dahingeschlachtet;
Und lieben mußt' ich ihn noch mehr,
Ihn meiden könnt' ich nimmer.
Schön ist er, düsterschön und hehr,
Und Heimat bleibt er immer.
Ich sah mit hellen Augen ihn,
Und auch mit tränenvollen;
Bald hob er meinen frohen Sinn,
Bald sänftigt' er mein Grollen.
In Sommersglut, in Winterfrost, -
Konnt' er mir mehr nicht geben, -
So gab er meinem Herzen Trost;
Und drum: Mein Wald, mein Leben!

Thought I'd update you on the latest member of my furry 4-legged family - little hammie's been with me just over a week now. I named him "Pippin" (after the hobbit in Lord of the Rings, it just suited him - he's an adventurous little thing!). I'm so pleased with how well he's settled in... I'd been told in the shop he wasn't yet tame and worried he'd be shy. However, whoever bred him handled him well (or he's just an exceptionally confident little hammie!) cause from the start he's been a happy and nosy little character... After 24hrs, I started stroking him, then a little while later, gently scooping him up in my hands]. At first, he scurried off quickly, but now he will happily sit or walk over my hands for a few minutes at a time. He's never once tried to bite or anything :)
He goes out for little adventures each evening in his ball. Of course it's hard to tell with such a tiny creature but I think he really enjoys the explorations around our downstairs. He rolls up and down the hall, the living room and the kitchen, stopping only to sniff an interesting item in his path, give his face a quick wash... or, to investigate Barney!! I'd originally planned to keep dog and hamster apart, particularly when Pippin was in his ball - as Barney is ball obsessed and also a hunter of voles when we're on walks (albeit a very ineffective one!). However as Pip likes to roll everywhere on the ground floor, it wasn't really feasible, so I've taught Barney to be very quiet and calm when Pip's rolling around.
After one quiet but firm "settle down" from me, (he looked a bit too interested on the first evening) he has been good as gold. He actually tries to keep away from Pippin but there's no escape! Pip will spy Barney from up the hall and make a beeline straight for the big dog. He will then sit right up against Barney, sniffing at his paws and fur with obvious interest. Pippin doesn't seem scared, he's happy to groom right next to either dog and doesn't freeze or try and run off... In fact, if I move him away, he often rolls straight back to Barney! Barney lies quietly, deliberately not looking at the hammie and gently moving his paws out the way from time to time. Don't like everything the "Dog Whisperer" says but to use his phrase, Barney's the model of a dog in a "calm, submissive state". Obviously, I wouldn't leave them alone though, it's nice they seem to be co-existing but I wouldn't want Pippin to get hurt...
Anyway, Pippin seems happy in his new home, the dogs have accepted him and he's being very friendly and confident. All going very well really, now, if I can just clicker train him to pose for the camera.... ;-) Haha, will try getting some nicer pics soon, maybe of the odd pair together, reminds me of Bolt and Rhino (if you've seen "Bolt", you'll know what I'm talking about!)
