İSTANBUL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUMS

The İstanbul Archaeological Museums, a museum affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is located in İstanbul's Sultanahmet neighborhood, on the Osman Hamdi Bey slope connecting the Gülhane Park with the Topkapı Palace. Its name is plural, since there are three different museums under the same administration: The Archaeological Museum, the Ancient Orient Museum (Eski Şark Eserleri Müzesi) and Tiled Kiosk Museum (Çinili Köşk Müzesi).

Solidarity from Zuccotti Park to Gezi Park. Occupy Wall Street and members of New York City's Turkish community gathered in Occupy's old base in Zuccotti Park near Wall Street On June 1 and 2 to protest the Turkish government's bloody crackdown on peaceful protesters. What began as an effort to preserve a small park in Istanbul's Taksim Square has become a national campaign against Turkey's increasingly authoritarian Islamic government.

Another look at the historic tram (streetcar) on Istiqlal St. I was using an ancient Fuji F810 camera which has given me terrific night shots in Bangkok. I was airing it out after a long time, but I made the mistake of setting the Iso to 400, which restricted it's working greatly and ended up giving me rather fuzzy shots. Notes about the historic tram in the next caption. (Istanbul, Turkey, Nov. 2014)

The Republic Monument (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Anıtı) is a notable monument located at Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey to commemorate the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Built in two and half years with financial support from the population and unveiled by Dr. Hakkı Şinasi Pasha on August 8, 1928, it was designed by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica.[1]

The 11 m (36 ft) high monument portrays the founders of the Turkish Republic, prominent are depictions of Kemal Atatürk, who commissioned the work, his assistant İsmet İnönü, and Fevzi Çakmak. The monument has two sides, the side facing northward depicts Atatürk at an earlier period and the other one facing Istiklal Caddesi has Atatürk and his comrades dressed in modern, western-European clothing, symbolizing him in both his roles, as military commander-in-chief and as statesman.

Mikhail Frunze, an important leader of the October Revolution, and Kliment Voroshilov, a Marshal of the Soviet Union,[2] are among the group behind Atatürk. Their presence in the monument, ordered by Atatürk, points out to the military aid given by Vladimir Lenin during the Turkish War of Independence in 1920.

Cumhuriyet Anıtı is an important site, where official ceremonies on national holidays are being held.

Eyüp Sultan Mosque & Abu Ayyub al-Ansari's Cemetery

The Eyüp Sultan Mosque (Turkish: Eyüp Sultan Camii) is situated in the district of Eyüp on the European side of Istanbul, near the Golden Horn, outside the Walls of Constantinople. Built in 1458, it was the first mosque constructed by the Ottoman Turks following their conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

The mosque rises next to the place where Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Turkish: Eyüp Sultan), the standard-bearer of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, is said to have been buried during the Arab assault on Constantinople in 670. His tomb is greatly venerated by Muslims, attracting many pilgrims. Some of the personal belongings of Muhammad are preserved in the tomb.
