The freshwaters of our planet are not so fresh anymore. We have polluted them with our urban waste, fertilizers, chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals. Our rivers, lakes, and waterways are full of contaminants, trash, excess nutrients, organic sludge, and erosion-induced sedimentation. Consequently, we now struggle with the collapse of freshwater habitats and biodiversity, severe water scarcity, massive eutrophication, destructive floods, and the spreading of harmful invasive aquatic plants.
We cannot turn back time, but we can change our direction. Let us not forget that all life on earth, including ours, depends on water. It is our most precious resource. We need to show our waters more respect and care. In return, they will give much more to us. Cleaning our dirty water bodies, de-weeding our eutrophicated water systems, de-silting our choked waterways, and improving the safety and functionality of our urban and industrial waters will make our cities and environment healthier, safer, more sustainable, and more enjoyable. It will also boost the protection and recovery of biodiversity.

The way things are now, the only way for food processors to show they avoid GE/GMO ingredients is to undergo a certifying process that is lengthy and costly. It's yet another unreasonable tariff on healthier foods making them seem elite when GE/GMO food has all the backing of the US Government including via Farm Bill subsidies (that are BILLIONS every year), and rules lowering the costs of crop insurance if farmers use Monsanto seed, among other forces out to line the pockets of the seedy and greedy.
Mandatory Labeling would relieve smaller producers of having to prove their innocence in not using something that 93% of Americans have said they'd prefer were labeled.
As one video says, without GMO labeling, we all eat in the dark.
Don't know whether you are eating them?
Over 70% of all products in a grocery store are made with GMO products. That doesn't include all the animal products both meat, and dairy (including eggs) which are produced by feeding the animals almost exclusively GE/GMO grains & seeds (soy, corn, canola, cotton, sugar beets, etc -- what goes through them comes to you...).
Unless it says organic, or otherwise produced without GE/GMO ingredients, it likely contains them or was produced with them.
Even organic is losing the fight. There appears to be virtually no corn left that is not tainted by cross-polination with GMO corn.
And natural means nothing (it's been a processed food marketing ploy for over 100 years). It certainly doesn't mean GMO-Free.
Why is GE/GMO such an issue? Well, one is that it's an unnatural laboratory protein. Proteins are what we react to when there is an allergic reaction which is apparently being triggered more often by these crops. Once triggered eating an organic version is no longer an option. Corn allergies are nightmares for those who have them which could be you at any time, if that next bite puts your body over the edge in being able to deal with it. Worse is the possibility that your defenses constantly being on alert leave your future children with less.
But, GE/GMO crops are approved by the science paid for by the companies that own the profitable patents (owning life itself) and because they own the patents they won't allow outside, independent researchers access to the seeds to study what effects are not being revealed or are being downplayed.
Essentially the American people are one big cage of Guinea Pigs. We are being experimented on.
What compensation would you require to eat poison?
Unfortunately I have to say that the only way to be sure what's in your food is to start by never going in a corporate grocery store, then eating food in its whole, pure form preferably straight from the farmer.

One of many protest, across the United States of America on May 1st (May Day). This is an urgent call to the fans of GASLAND and to the fracking movement across the nation, please act now to Save the Delaware River. On November 21st, the Delaware River Basin commission will vote on a plan to allow 20,000 gas wells in the Delaware River basin. We need calls to come from all over the nation and we need people from all over the region to come out in protest on November 21st.
The Delaware River Basin commission is comprised of five voting members, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York, Governor Christie of New Jersey, Governor Corbett of Pennsylvania, Governor Markell from Delaware and the Obama Administration represented by the Army Corps of Engineers. For the Delaware River to be opened up to drilling three out of five have to vote yes on the draft regulations plan. We need them all to reject the proposal and reject gas drilling and fracking.
There has never been a more urgent moment in the North east in the battle against fracking. The Delaware is the primary drinking water source for 15.6 million people and it is a national treasure.
Four actions you can take:
1) Call the the Governors from the member states and President Obama TODAY and tell them, "Hello, I am calling you to express my serious concerns about hydrofracking. Please Don’t Drill the Delaware!"

This much-loved Eritrean gospel singer, 30-year-old Helen Berhane, had just released her latest album when she was arrested in May 2004. She has been held in detention ever since. Her “crime”? Helen refused to give up her faith and music.
Helen is being held at the Mai Serwa army camp. She has spent most of her time in detention in a metal shipping container. Conditions in these containers are horrific: sweltering by day, freezing by night, with no toilet or washing facilities. What’s more, authorities in Eritrea, north-east Africa, are known to torture prisoners, and Christian group like Helen’s have been brutally persecuted – so we are particularly worried about this talented young woman.
‘You will be allowed no visitors, and you will rot here until you sign this paper’. Despite threats like this from a military Commander, Helen continues to refuse to abandon her prohibited faith and music. But concern grows daily for her mental and physical well-being. Denied visitors or legal representation, it is difficult to know the exact state of Helen’s welfare.
Helen is just one of 150 women, jailed without charge or trial, who belong to Christian churches not recognised by the government. Most of their families have no idea where these women – mothers, daughters, wives, sisters – are held, or the condition they are in.
The Eritrean government continues to claim that accusations of religious persecution are ‘groundless’, and that there are not political prisoners in Eritrea. But Helen’s case is not unique: large numbers – possibly several thousand – are held in indefinite detention, without charge or trial. They include political activists, journalists, civil servants, professionals, and members of religious groups.
In response to international pressure the Eritrean government, in April 2004, stated: ‘people are free to worship according to their wish’. But just a few short weeks later, Helen Berhane was arrested and detained for refusing to sign a document pledging to end all participation in Christian activities. Her family have not seen or heard from her since.

Six years ago, a journalist sent an email using his Yahoo account. And it wasn't long after Internet company Yahoo disclosed the contents of that personal email message to authorities in China that Shi Tao's whole world was turned upside down.
Shi Tao has now served half of his 10-year prison sentence and the company largely responsible for putting him in jail, may hold the key to getting him out.
Urge Yahoo to pressure Chinese authorities to release Shi Tao.
In less than two weeks, Yahoo is holding its annual shareholder meeting in San Jose, CA. Amnesty representatives will be in attendance and plan on putting a major kink in its traditional business agenda. For the fourth consecutive year1, we're laying Yahoo's shameful policies on human rights on the table and urging all Yahoo shareholders in attendance to join us in demanding that the company live up to its founding principles of open access and community empowerment2.
It is critical that Yahoo hears this message echoed by its shareholder base because this group has a strong influence over decision making and Yahoo's financial future. It's unfortunate that we've got to aim at the company's bottom line in order to focus their attention on the larger problem. But even after other large Internet companies, including Google and GoDaddy.com, took very public steps forward recently in condemning China's censorship and other restrictive practices3, Yahoo's silence remains harshly deafening.

It was 7:10 am, I was finishing my 12 hour nite shift. I was on the phone with our NY office, discussing the details of a batch job running on one of our servers. She put me on hold to verify some code info......and I was casually watching the big screen monitor mounted high on the wall a few cubicle isles over.
CNN was showing a plane flying into to first tower. I was still on hold. As I stood up to have someone across the way turn up the volume.......my cohort came back on the line. I'm not sure if I was all that calm when I told her I thought a plane just flew into her building. She said they heard a loud bang, but their supervisor was looking into it. She didnt believe me.
Why should she believe some programmer from AZ telling her a plane just flew into her building.
At that point, I think I told her the 2nd plane hit...f*ck what her boss was saying...everything was not okay...I was not making it up...I described the chaos we were witnessing on the tv...."use your sick time....vacation....just leave!" We hung up and I joined the crowd forming around the TV in silence.
I still wonder if she got out, or how her life changed forever on that day.
My shift ended.....the new crew was on their way into the building......some had been listening to the radio during their commute across the valley.......others were just learning.....some were crying.....others just stood in shock. One of my co-workers, who, on anyother day would be someone I would admire for his constant sunny disposition, walked by in tears trying to get thru to NY on his cell.
Today, if I were to hug him, as I did on 9-11, in the lobby of that fortune 500 org., we would both be advised on "inappropriate behavior in the workplace". How sad is that ?!?!
In the days that followed, when I wasnt glued to the set, crying, or wide awake having anxiety attacks into the night...........I made new friends at the grocery store, let people in line ahead of me-- no questions asked, hugged people with no hesitation, and vowed to be more in the moment.
How long did it take tho.....before people were back to: not acknowledging each other in line at the grocer, inching their cars forward because 'letting someone in' would delay them, re-establishing the unwritten rules of interaction in public, and operating on auto-pilot thru the day????
So.....what can I commit to....today?.....and each day after?
I can acknowledge "friends I haven't met yet".....allow people to cut in front of me in traffic, at the store,.....hug when I get the urge.......and be in the moment..................
