In the San Francisco International Airport terminal there was a great display of early TV memorabilia.
With little time between flights I hurriedly took a few photos. I wish I could have studied these displays in more detail.
Best known for their long-running television series, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, the Nelson family began their successful togetherness with the marriage of saxophone-playing Ozzie to his "girl-singer," Harriet in the 1930s. Ozzie's deliberate hesitancy and self-deprecating humor were the perfect foil for the sweet and sassy Harriet, who interrupted her songs with sarcastic banter. During the 1940s, Ozzie, Harriet and their band were regulars on radio's Red Skelton show, and in 1944 when Red was drafted into the army, they took over his time slot. For Skelton, the Nelsons stuck to their big band routines with occasional married-couple skits providing non-musical breaks, but when Ozzie conceived the pilot for his own program he decided to venture more into the realm of domestic comedy, writing a script based on his own family life.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet was a long-running American radio and television series, airing on ABC from 1952 to 1966 after a ten-year run on radio. Starring Ozzie Nelson and his wife, singer Harriet Hilliard (she dropped her maiden name after the couple ended their music career), the show's sober, gentle humor captured a large, sustained audience, although it never rated in the top ten programs, it was an iconic snapshot of post-World War II American family life.
In ABC Family's Ruby & the Rockits (premiering Tuesday at 8:30/7:30 CT), former Spy Kid Alexa Vega plays a teen who introduces herself to David Gallagher, the father she never knew. But since Dad (played by Partridge Family front man David Cassidy) is busy living off the fumes of his once-ago success, Ruby's arrival strikes the wrong chord.
"David isn't capable of taking care of her, because he's constantly running around touring, playing in Indian casinos," Vega explains in this TVGuide.com video Q&A. Luckily, David's brother, Patrick — played by, you guessed it, Patrick Cassidy — is there to step up where his sib falls short.
In this on-camera interview, Vega also talks of the other Cassidy involved with Ruby & the Rockits, and she reveals how the family of famous fellas have regaled her with scores of stories of their heyday.
In closing, Vega shares how she and her producer beau, Sean Colver, got Ghost Whisperer Jennifer Love Hewitt and her own boyfriend, Jamie Kennedy, to star in the indie film Café

I did my best Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff impression for this illustration, rendered from a layout by Cynthia Ward. Creative collaboration is what made the experience working at Nelvana so special. It appeared on the cover of the national magazine TV Guide. The illustration was pulled from a Babar character bible I was commissioned by Nelvana to create, under the direct supervision of art director Kim Cleary.
The illustrations would be used for years in a plethora of merchandising opportunities that were developed to broaden the reach of the character, animated series, and brand.
