Like others, I was waiting for the rain to clear so that we could snap Lake Matheson reflect the Southern Alps. No one else seemed to see this Tui come down to drink the nectar from the flax plant, so in to the bag went the Pentax and out of the bag came the D300.
Tui are considered to be very intelligent, much like parrots. They also resemble parrots in their ability to clearly imitate human speech and are known for their noisy, unusual call, different for each individual, that combine bellbird-like notes with clicks, cackles, timber-like creaks and groans, and wheezing sounds—the unusual possession of 2 voiceboxes enable Tui to perform such a myriad of vocalisations
Some of the huge range of Tui sounds are beyond the human register. Watching a Tui sing, one can observe gaps in the sound when the beak is agape and throat tufts throbbing. Tui will also sing at night, especially around the full moon period.
Nectar is the normal diet but fruit and insects are frequently eaten, and pollen and seeds more occasionally. Particularly popular is the New Zealand flax, whose nectar sometimes ferments, resulting in the Tui flying in a fashion that suggests that they might be drunk. Tui are the main pollinators of flax, kowhai, kaka beak and some other plants. Note that the flowers of the three plants mentioned are similar in shape to the Tui's beak—a vivid example of mutualistic coevolution (Wiki)

The neighbours Pohutukawa trees have finally decided to flower. Along with the flowers comes the native Tui who love the nectar. The blazing red flowers of pōhutukawa around Christmas time have earned this tree the title of New Zealand's Christmas tree. Pōhutukawa and rātā belong to the genus Metrosideros. In New Zealand, this genus is represented by two pōhutukawa (mainland and Kermadec), six species of rātā vine, a related shrub, and three tree rātā.
Mainland pōhutukawa (M. excelsa) occurs naturally in the upper half of the North Island (north of New Plymouth and Gisborne) although it grows from one end of the country to the other. It is easily distinguished from rātā by the hairs on the underside of the leaves.

I haven't had much luck with the New Zealand endemic bird, the tui (prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) as I usually find them half obscured by branches or in poor light. So I was pleased to get this one last month on Tiritiri Matangi, although it's not too sharp on the face & it is banded. I was pleased to see one here in Southland today as well.

Tūī are unique (endemic) to New Zealand and belong to the honeyeater family, which means they feed mainly on nectar from flowers of native plants such as kōwhai, puriri, rewarewa, kahikatea, pohutukawa, rātā and flax. Occasionally they will eat insects too.
They are important pollinators of many native trees and will fly large distances, especially during winter for their favourite foods.

With the weather beginning to perk up and longer days coming up, it is good to get out and about again; Birmingham Airport in particular is getting busier and sees a lot of variety especially with the winter travel season.
Whilst by no means the largest carrier at Birmingham, TUI Airways operations has been long-standing from the days of Britannia Airways which later became Thomsonfly, not forgetting First Choice that was merged with TUI AG in 2007 which saw both airlines being incorporated into Thomson Airways in late-2008, being TUI Airways since late-2017. The carrier competes with an expanding EasyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair.
Since TUI Airways took delivery of their first Boeing 737 MAX back in late-2018 (over 6 years ago), the carrier has amassed as a sizeable collection with deliveries ongoing allowing the elder Boeing 737-800s to be returned back to their leasing companies. Despite their influx, TUI Airways has taken on second-hand Boeing 737-800s from other TUI-owned airlines, or different carriers to expand their short-haul network.
Even today, TUI Airways still have a sizeable order of Boeing 737 MAX 8s and the larger Boeing 737 MAX 10, albeit there is no timeline for when the first of latter will be delivered.
