Trappistine Convent, Hakodate

Stourhead was one of the first country villas to be built in the new Palladian style. The central part of the house was destroyed by fire in 1902 but was restored and completed in 1907. It was given to the National Trust in 1947.

Its world-famous landscape garden has a magnificent lake, classical temples and grottoes with rare and exotic trees. Unfortunately, on the day I visited the lake had been partially drained for renovation work. What water remained was covered in algae and the Pantheon was covered in scaffolding and sheeting for restoration work. Such is life!

I thought it was a cicada, but not sure now. Wings seem a bit short.

Standen always put on a wonderful Christmas display and it will be interesting to see what they do this year.

This Georgian mansion surrounded by parkland, was rescued by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country for 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings.
