Transcendental – Summer sunrise at the Ring of Brodgar in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney with the sun just breaking over the Loch of Harray.

Leaving our lodge some 30 minutes before dawn, the sky over Scapa Flow was clear as forecast, but the faint touch of pinks and purple in the wispy clouds in the opposite direction only hinted at what was to come. Staying barely 12 minutes' drive away from the ring and with anticipation building, I soon arrived at the isthmus at Brodgar, rubbing the sleep away from eyes confirmed the slowly developing colours were indeed real.

I was completely alone. Not a soul around or even a distant bird's call to beak the ethereal silence at this unearthly, yet superbly magical hour. To be able to witness daybreak at this inspirational location is as unique and other-worldly an experience as one can imagine. Never have I been so richly rewarded in so many ways for a 0330 start with such an unforgettable dawn.

I fell in love with this beautifully unique and remarkable landscape 4 years ago, but never did I dare dream that I'd witness nature's lightshow in such a way like this, at this stunningly and truly inspirational location. In peace with both nature and with the mysterious, ancient, historic past.

To say this was a transcendental experience would be a massive understatement.

This is just one of 100s of images from this memorable dawn and from a superbly regenerative holiday on Orkney; real tonic for body and soul.

The mosaics of the Palatine Chapel are of unparalleled elegance as concerns elongated proportions and streaming draperies of figures. They are also noted for subtle modulations of colour and luminance. The oldest are probably those covering the ceiling, the drum, and the dome.

The rest of the mosaics, dated to the 1160s or the 1170s, are executed in a cruder manner and feature Latin (rather than Greek) inscriptions. Probably a work of local craftsmen, these pieces are more narrative and illustrative than transcendental. A few mosaics have a secular character and represent oriental flora and fauna. This may be the only substantial passage of secular Byzantine mosaic extant today.

The Palatine Chapel is the royal chapel of the Norman Palace in Palermo, Sicily. This building is a mixture of Byzantine, Norman and Fatimid architectural styles, showing the tricultural state of Sicily during the 12th century after Roger I and Robert Guiscard conquered the island.

Also referred to as a Palace church or Palace chapel, it was commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132 to be built upon an older chapel (now the crypt) constructed around 1080. It took eight years to build, receiving a royal charter the same year, with the mosaics being only partially finished by 1143. The sanctuary, dedicated to Saint Peter, is reminiscent of a domed basilica. It has three apses, as is usual in Byzantine architecture, with six pointed arches (three on each side of the central nave) resting on recycled classical columns. The muqarnas ceiling of the nave and the chapel's rectilinear form show the Fatimid influence in the building's construction.

The mosaics of the Palatine Chapel are of unparalleled elegance as concerns elongated proportions and streaming draperies of figures. They are also noted for subtle modulations of colour and luminance. The oldest are probably those covering the ceiling, the drum, and the dome. The shimmering mosaics of the transept, presumably dating from the 1140s and attributed to Byzantine artists, with an illustrated scene, along the north wall, of St. John in the desert and a landscape of Agnus Dei. Below this are five saints, the Greek fathers of the church, St. Gregory of Nissa, St. Gregory the Theologian, St. Basil, St. John Chrysostom and St. Nicholas. The three central figures, St. Gregory, St. Basil, and St. John Chrysostom, are the Three Great Orthodox Church Fathers referred to as the Three Hierarchs, which originated fifty years earlier. Every composition is set within an ornamental frame, not dissimilar to that used in contemporaneous mosaic icons.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A deliberate attmept to set the poetry of Rumi to an associated image. First inspired by a recording of some of the most sublime music I've ever heard by Jon Hassell, "Last Night the Moon Came Dropping its Clothes in the Street" ( on ECM ), I went in search of the original Rumi poem. Thanks to Hassell's notes, I found it in Coleman Barks' impeccable translation, "The Essential Rumi". The poem is called "The New Rule".

I've expanded Hassell's truncated title by incorporating the entire second verse, one that speaks eloquently of Rumi's passionate and transcendental devotion.

Both Paul Ewing and Miguel de Ozarko have both mentioned that my work has possible connections to David Hockney's "Joiners", assemblies of photographs that question a single view of time and place. Miguel sent me a You Tube link and I watched in fascination as Hockney described his method. I found that I really liked both the man and his work. I had passed over Hockney in Art School and never paid him much attention. So I think both Miguel and Paul for their exposure and widening of my Art knowledge.

Tegenungan Waterfall, located near Ubud, Bali, is a stunning natural attraction surrounded by lush greenery. The waterfall cascades from a rocky cliff above into a shallow pool below. Visitors often climb close to the waterfall – like the woman in my photo – to capture a transcendental experience.
