The mosaics of the Palatine Chapel are of unparalleled elegance as concerns elongated proportions and streaming draperies of figures. They are also noted for subtle modulations of colour and luminance. The oldest are probably those covering the ceiling, the drum, and the dome.

The rest of the mosaics, dated to the 1160s or the 1170s, are executed in a cruder manner and feature Latin (rather than Greek) inscriptions. Probably a work of local craftsmen, these pieces are more narrative and illustrative than transcendental. A few mosaics have a secular character and represent oriental flora and fauna. This may be the only substantial passage of secular Byzantine mosaic extant today.

SALDA LAKE

Lake Salda is a mid-size crater lake[citation needed] in southwestern Turkey, within the boundaries of Yeşilova district of Burdur Province. It lies at a distance of about fifty kilometers to the west from the province seat Burdur.

Lake Salda is often included in the Turkish Lakes Region that extends across inner western to southern Anatolia, especially Isparta Province and Afyonkarahisar Province, although Lake Salda is geographically separate from the larger lakes, which are more to the east and, being a crater lake, is morphologically different from these tectonic lakes.

The lake area covers 4,370 hectares, and its depth reaches 196 meters, making it one of the deeper lakes in Turkey, if not the deepest. The lake sedimentary records show high resolution climate changes that are related to solar variability during the last millennium.

The lake is a popular excursion spot for people across the region or from beyond, the more so due to the hydromagnesite mineral found in its coastal waters, which is believed to offer remedies for certain dermatological diseases. The shorelines, surrounded by black pine forests, are also popular among hunters, the game and the fowl available including quails, hares, foxes, boars and wild ducks, aside from the lake's fish. White sandy beaches, limpid water and seven crystal-white islets within the lake complete the scenery.

A township that starts almost at the shore to the southwest of the lake carries the same name, Salda. The local administrative seat of Yeşilova is located to the east of the lake at a distance of about four kilometers and Yeşilova municipality manages the lake's camping facilities.

Its peculiar morphology has led to a number of academic studies conducted on Lake Salda. The unusual alkaline nature of the lake means that is one of the few locations where ancient stromatolite algae still grows.

In 2019, a team of planetary scientists from America and Turkey conducted research on Lake Salda's shoreline microbialite sediments. In March 2021, NASA reported that its Mars surface-exploring rover Perseverance showed that "the minerals and rock deposits at Salda are the nearest match on earth to those around the Jezero Crater where the spacecraft landed."

Hoping to protect the Lake Salda area, the nation's environmental authority has launched a huge national park project. The Salda Lake National Park is currently under construction and should be finished in 2023.(Wiki) my

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π.

It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, an employee of the Exploratorium. Celebrations often involve eating pie or holding pi recitation competitions. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day. UNESCO's 40th General Conference designated Pi Day as the International Day of Mathematics in November 2019.

The number π is a mathematical constant. It is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, and it also has various equivalent definitions. It appears in many formulas in all areas of mathematics and physics and the earliest known use of the Greek letter π to represent the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter was by Welsh mathematician William Jones in 1706. It is approximately equal to 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-18th century, and is spelled out as "pi". It is also referred to as Archimedes' constant

Being an irrational number, π cannot be expressed as a common fraction, although fractions such as 22/7 are commonly used to approximate it. Equivalently, its decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanently repeating pattern. Its decimal (or other base) digits appear to be randomly distributed, and are conjectured to satisfy a specific kind of statistical randomness.

It is known that π is a transcendental number: it is not the root of any polynomial with rational coefficients. The transcendence of π implies that it is impossible to solve the ancient challenge of squaring the circle with a compass and straightedge.

Ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians and Babylonians, required fairly accurate approximations of π for practical computations. Around 250 BC, the Greek mathematician Archimedes created an algorithm to approximate π with arbitrary accuracy. In the 5th century AD, Chinese mathematics approximated π to seven digits, while Indian mathematics made a five-digit approximation, both using geometrical techniques. The first exact formula for π, based on infinite series, was discovered a millennium later, when in the 14th century the Madhava–Leibniz series was discovered in Indian mathematics.

Il 14 marzo (o 3,14) è il giorno del Pi greco: una festa per chi ama la matematica

Il simbolo che conosciamo fu usato per la prima volta circa 250 anni fa, dal matematico gallese William Jones nel trattato A New Introduction to Mathematics (1706).

Teilhard adds to the classical transcendentals (being, unity, goodness, truth, and beauty) the additional mark of futurity. In his worldview the universe has always been greeted silently by the coming of the future. That is why it has evolved. In response to the invisible dawning of the Absolute Future—as theologian Karl Rahner names the God of Abraham—the universe has taken on the posture of anticipation. When mind arrived full-blown in terrestrial and human evolution, a strain of anticipation had already graced the cosmos, bestowing on it the quality of being a drama of awakening. The world has always been leaning on the future as the ultimate source of its being and becoming. Each human mind, therefore, instantiates in a concentrated form the entire universe’s unrelenting anticipation of an indestructible future that empowers our capacity to raise questions.

--THE COSMIC VISION OF

TEILHARD DE CHARDIN John F. Haught

I saw this house on the road from Salda to Denizli. True, for him to find me, for some reason I first wanted to turn off the highway and enter a small town.

After driving through its streets and not finding anything special for street photography, I turned around and drove back a different road ...

“Silence stands outside the world of profit and utility; it cannot be exploited for profit; you cannot get anything out of it. It is ‘unproductive’ Therefore it is regarded as valueless. Yet there is more help and healing in silence than in all the 'useful things.’ Purposeless, unexplainable silence suddenly appears at the side of the all-too-purposeful, and frightens us by its very purposelessness. It interferes with the regular flow of the purposeful. It strengthens the untouchable, it lessens the damage inflicted by exploitation. It makes things whole again, by taking them back from the world of dissipation into the world of wholeness. It gives something its own holy uselessness, for that is what silence itself is: holy uselessness.” (Max Picard)

Inferno is a seven minute loop audiovisual installation by Paris-based Australian artist, Mikaela Stafford.

It is a sci-fi reverie that is eerie and ethereal: alien, yet earthy. The work is heightened by a genre-bending, techno-transcendental soundscape created by composer and sound designer Kate Durman.

"I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night"

The Devil's Nose: The rails of redemption.

Province of Chimborazo, 1901.- The Harman brothers face the slopes of the mountains that their inhabitants call "Condor Puñuna" (condor nest). Having witnessed, with dismay, how the thorough work of previous months was swept away by the rains, they decide on the train route proposed by the recently deceased engineer, Henry Davis. It is a transcendental decision: it would cost the lives of about two thousand workers (it is not known for sure how many would have died); in turn, it would ensure the success of the railway between Guayaquil and Quito, marking the beginning of its long-awaited completion in 1908.

The shape of the mountain and the death toll during the construction of this section earned it the macabre nickname 'Devil's Nose'.

This section of the route is central to the Ecuadorian railway. It is the section that connects the coast with the mountains. Sooner or later, one way or another, the engineers who built the line eastward from Durán would have to solve the chilling slope of the Andes. For the unthinkable feat, the Harmans brought labor that they considered resistant enough to accomplish. Three thousand Jamaicans and one thousand Puerto Ricans were taken to the site, and without being technically slaves, because they were paid four cents, their defections were punished. They lived free and died free, for hundreds.

Alausí, the starting point to embark on the tourist train that visits the Devil's Nose, is a town that has benefited from the rebirth of its railway route. The restored train station is a hotbed of activity before each departure and arrival; a dozen stalls selling handicrafts; the Train Café of the station ... all have come up again. It has little to do with the situation of 10 years ago, when all that was abandoned.

The train continues on its way outside the Alausí station. The whistle bursts into the fresh morning air. Ahead is one of the most difficult engineering works in the world: the track dug on rocky slopes. We descend 500 meters towards the coastal plain, in just 18km. Chu-chu-chu advances the train and its wagons, the arms of the brequeros rise and fall in cadence. The iron monster and its wagons continue. Towards the right side, far below, the Guasuntos River appears. Walking goes the tyrant of the rails, while we pass a huge curve to reveal the valley of the Chanchán river, traveling its way to the west. And this is where we find Davis's great idea. The only way the train could climb (or slide) up the mountain (or down the mountain) would be by means of a zigzag movement. And so we go, back and forth, a strange feeling that makes us think: "this is going the wrong way", until the train finally reaches the bottom of the valley, the murky river below, and arrives at the station from Sibambe.

From here, within an hour, zigzagging, we will take the road back. But, for now, we go to the cafeteria to try a juice and a humita, witness a typical dance and admire the crafts of the Andean community of Nizag. Also, we enjoy a guided visit to the modest museum, we enjoy the landscape and the weather, which is a few degrees hotter than Alausí.

From this snubbed point, with its river muttering in the distance, I have a disturbing feeling that it is difficult to shake off. If this railroad had not been declared cultural heritage of the country and worthy of the massive investment of the government to re-emerge as it has arisen, the workers who, a century ago, suffered from the worst imaginable circumstances in the construction of this railroad, would have suffered completely in vain. I can't help thinking that the only way to give those deaths a meaning, to redeem them in some way from their spooky destiny, is to ride the railway they built with their hands. Their tormented souls may be comforted by our admiration for such a monumental achievement.

Bloodroot. Luminescent white flowers emerging from collages of dead leaves.

Tapered petals of roughly eight, translucent-veined.

In less-petaled specimens, divergent petals much like a pinwheel; in lusher examples, layers like lotuses.

Daisy-like, but not quite; too white, of too-pointy petals, with too wily a variance in expression, opening sundial-like, then reverting to bud at night. And instead of friendly arm-like leaves waving in the breeze, a cloak of earthly green, which it rises from, then sheds to its feet.

Remember this: Bloodroot, surreally white, ghosts out in broad daylight, haunting the roadside.

Take it as a warning, if you wish; it is arguably most terrifying to encounter a ghost during the daytime. Ghosts are supposed to emerge at night, not in broad daylight; we almost never see a ghost in full visage. Hence the shock of spotting a bloodroot.

You are brave, though. You shake off this shock. You pluck one free of its earthly cloak and ask; “Why do you haunt here at this hour?”

You watch as its stem bleeds on your fingers, all too eager to tell. You consider that perhaps it haunts during the day because it has so much to say; a flower that picks you more than you it.

The blood from its roots looks much like your own. Speaks to you of your blood, your roots. You suddenly sense that you are much like this flower, a sort of ghost haunting the roadside; you are being of previous incarnations, a culmination of generations upon generations, the fruit of a grapevine of genetic code whispering diaphanous incantations, barely audible, a haunting tone vibrating your bones….even more, you are a being of blood that will one day cease to flow, lead you to become a true ghost.

On your walk home, you watch the iridescent underpinning of life emerge.

Bloodroot, bloodroot. A flower that picks you.

...

(Quite evidently, I have a rather surreal relationship with bloodroot flowers.

I first encountered them in the spring of 2011 on a walk down the street. I took some photos of them; luminescent white blossoms, haloed by the distortion of my vintage lens and adapter.

The spring of 2011 was a particularly spiritual time for me – I was, for reasons I decline to describe, close to the other side – though I didn’t think much of the flowers at the time. And I more or less forgot about them until 2023-2024, when I read two botanical texts that mentioned them and belabored the luminescent white of their blossoms, imparting to them an almost transcendent quality.

Upon encountering these texts, I began contemplating my encounter with them back in 2011 and was taken by the resonance of a transcendence-coded flower appearing to me at a time in my life of transcendental textures. It came to me that these flowers could be compared to the ghosts I so often contemplated at that time – and so, in my personal index of botanical significations, bloodroot flowers are now Ghosts.)
