Now are mountain cairns the equivalent to driftwood stacks on the beach? There's something that hoomans seem to always need to do and stack stuff into a formation or make a signal marker. I'm not a phycologist and want to begin to work it all out but will still photograph them although do know a few photogs who just hate them. Either way they do seem to appear all over the place...bit like that old meme - 'Leroy was here' maybe. Ponderous.

One of the most famous tourist destinations in the world, for a good reason.

The Milwaukee Pierhead Light is an active lighthouse located in the Milwaukee harbor, just south of downtown. This aid to navigation is a 'sister' of the Kenosha North Pier Light. The station was established in 1872. It is west of the Milwaukee Breakwater Light, and is near the outflow of the Milwaukee River—not far east of where that river converged with the Kinnickinnic River—into the Milwaukee Harbor and Lake Michigan. This light has a round steel tower with a round gallery and a ten-sided lantern. In 1926, the original 4th Order Fresnel lens was transferred to the Milwaukee Breakwater Light, and that lens is now displayed at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The Fifth Order Fresnel lens—installed in 1926—was removed in 2005. The tower is newly painted circa 2007. The 5th Order lens is said to be on display also at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. According to one source: "The original lantern room had helical bar windows and is believed to [be] the one presently on the Breakwater Light." This is corroborated by the report that the Breakwater Light has a "round cast iron lantern room [that] features helical astragal" in the lantern. A Submarine cable runs from this light to the Milwaukee Breakwater Light, upon which a lighted danger warning is displayed. The light was recently painted, circa 2007. From 1872 until 1926, the light had its own keepers. Thereafter, this light, like all of the lights in the harbor, was serviced by the resident Lighthouse keepers who were stationed at the neighboring North Point Light Station until it was automated. The light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 2012.

A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and to serve as a navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, rocks and safe entries to harbors; they also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and use of electronic navigational systems.

Starke is a city in Bradford County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,449 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bradford County.

Starke may have been named in honor of developer George W. Cole's fiancée or in honor of Madison Starke Perry, fourth governor of Florida and a Confederate States Army colonel.

The Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, adds that the city may have been named after "Thomas Starke, a slaveholder who once owned much land around the area."

The Three Bells of Fira, officially known as The Catholic Church of the Dormition, is a Greek Catholic church on the island of Santorini. The church is known for its blue dome, three bells and views. The building is located in the town of Fira, directly above the cliffs which dominate western Santorini.

The site of the modern Three Bells of Fira has been occupied by a number of other buildings. In the mid-17th century, two modest cave churches were built into the then-solid cliff face. These churches were eventually destroyed as the cliff receded (due to the ongoing expansion of Fira) and an infirmary was built. This building was eventually occupied by Jesuits, who lived on the site until the land was given to the Diocese of Santorini. The current church was built in 1757, and then refurbished and expanded multiple times over the centuries. The structure was heavily damaged in the 1956 Amorgos earthquake, after which the building was restored.

The church's feast day is 15 August.

The city of Pigeon Forge located in East Tennessee, is surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains and beautiful scenery for every season. This town is made up of a delightful mix of life-long residents, young families attracted by nature’s beauty, and folks who have chosen to spend their retirement years in Pigeon Forge.

The early history of this town dates back to before the Revolutionary War. The first business was established in the early 1800s. While Pigeon Forge once was a small farming community, the lure of the mountains brought more and more visitors to the area, and new businesses were established to meet the needs of these travelers.

Today, Pigeon Forge is a major tourist destination, and while the city takes care of more than 10 million people who visit each year, their residents are still our top priority. In addition to the Smoky Mountain scenery, Pigeon Forge has plenty of parks and recreational areas, an outstanding community center and public library, as well as an excellent educational system that ranges from pre-school through high school.

The Rockport Lime Kilns (ovens) were built prior to 1890 for the H.L. Shepard Company and last used in the 1930's. They processed limestone in the manufacture of building lime. Three hundred casks of lime were sent to Washington, DC in 1817 for use in the rebuilding of the United States Capitol. The village of Rockport lies just south of Camden Maine and was settled in 1769. Print size 8x10 inches.

The North Point Light is a lighthouse located in Lake Park on the East Side of Milwaukee in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.. It was also added to the Library of Congress Historic American Buildings Survey as survey HABS WI-358. It replaced a previous Cream City brick lighthouse constructed in 1855 that was located too close to the edge of the eroding bluff. In 1888 a cast-iron lighthouse was built, but this tower was not tall enough and was placed on top of a steel structure in 1912 raising its height to 74 feet (23 m) and light focal plane to 154 feet (47 m). The tower underwent restoration in 2005. The first lantern burned mineral oil. A new lens, installed in 1868, is still in use. The present light source is a 25,000 candlepower lamp rotated electrically and controlled by an automatic time clock. The lens fouses a 1,300,000 candlepower signal visible for 25 miles (40 km). A $984,000 grant was used to restore the light and to open it to the public.

There are fifty shades of green, and none of them are jaded. Welcome to Ireland! It's said that Ireland, once visited, is never forgotten, and for once the blarney delivered treasure to be kept for a lifetime. The Western Irish landscape has a mythic resonance, the country's history is almost tangible with ruins standing the test of time and its people seem put on earth expressly to restore faith in humanity as their warmth and humor will make all feel welcome.

My dear friend Daragh and I set out for an adventurous experience second to none along the Connemara Loop which is situated in breathtaking North West Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Following the Loop, we were taken on a journey through an ever changing landscape of craggy mountain peaks, spectacular expansive sandy beaches, the wild North Atlantic, mist covered lakes, pre-historic bogs and shady glens. All exemplify the peaceful solitude and rugged beauty of the West of Ireland. A landscape peppered with quaint but lively villages where all the convenience of the modern day is available alongside an opportunity to step back in time to a more relaxed and friendly era. Though the roads are rather narrow for this West Texas driver there was no getting lost although the wandering sheep may be inclined to cause a traffic-jam here and there.

Chloride is a onetime silver mining camp in Mohave County, Arizona, and is considered the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in the state.

Prospectors first located mineral resources in the area in the 1840s, including silver, gold, lead, zinc, and turquoise. Chloride was founded about 1863, but mining was not widespread until the 1870s after a treaty was signed with the Hualapai Indians. The railway from Kingman, called the Arizona and Utah Railway, was inaugurated on August 16, 1899 - the last silver spike was driven by Miss May Krider. The town eventually grew to a peak of around 5,000 inhabitants, and at one time Chloride was the county seat. By 1917 the population had fallen to 2,000, and by 1944 it was nearly a ghost town.

A chance trip which meant travelling thru National Park at sunrise showed a pre winter face on Ruapehu that morning. The sun just burst thru the clouds enough to splash the side of the mountain in some morning sunshine which seemed to create a nice contrast between light and dark...

One of the most stunning features of Hearst Castle is the opulent Roman Pool, an indoor swimming pool that looks straight out of a palace from ancient times. This jaw-dropping masterpiece is located beneath the tennis courts and is modeled after the luxurious baths of ancient Rome. Adorned with intricate blue and gold mosaic tiles, the pool is a symbol of wealth and grandeur, capturing the imagination of anyone who visits.

Designed by architect Julia Morgan, the Roman Pool was completed in the mid-1920s and remains one of the most iconic aspects of Hearst Castle today. The small glass and gold tiles (tesserae) are laid out in mesmerizing geometric patterns, with the recurring motif of the ancient Greek key and several depictions of mythological figures, including Neptune and Nereid. The deep blue hue of the tiles combined with the pool’s dramatic lighting creates a surreal and reflective effect, making it seem almost otherworldly. Eight Roman-style statues guard the space, adding to the classical grandeur.

Each corner and detail in the pool was meticulously planned, down to the alabaster lamps that stand elegantly by the pool’s edge, casting a soft glow. The ceiling, though weathered over time, complements the lavishness of the pool with its ornate design.

Visiting Hearst Castle and seeing the Roman Pool is like stepping into a different era, a place where art, architecture, and opulence meet. For architecture buffs and those with a love for history, this pool is not just a swimming area—it's an artistic experience not to be missed.
