Where there is a will there is a way ... farmland tucked in there between the cliffs and the painted desert. Captured while traveling from the north rim to south rim of the Grand Canyon there in Arizona.

This heron was trying to be stealthy and move back into the reeds but tough to do showing off that pony-tail! All of a sudden Tingley Beach is a top water bird and fowl photo spot!

From the comments below, I was reminded that not everyone will recognize the tough guy on the left, US President and "Rough Rider" Teddy Roosevelt. He's famous for saying "Talk softly, and carry a big stick", and for being the namesake of the teddy bear.

While visiting the Moraine Creek area of Katmai National Park in Alaska, we were blessed to share the morning in the water with this lad.

One aspect of up-close and personal Coastal brown bear (Grizz in the lower 48) photography that I did not visualize in either my day or night dreams of the day was just how scarred up the boars would be. At first, I thought it was some type of leafy material entangled in their coat…nope…it is hanging scar tissue from fighting!

While standing in the creek with younger males and females fishing all around us, it was this large fellow that I couldn’t stop photographing. As a child I always pictured Heaven as fields, mountains and the like. Little did I realize that for me it would be standing in a creek in the rain, in Alaska with my bride with 5-7 bears within a 30–40-yard radius!

Other bears came and went, but he seemed to stay in a small area with us, at one point fighting off another male on the other side of a small, brush covered island not more than 30 feet away from us! Shortly after the skirmish, he decided to mark his territory. When he stood up to grab the branches, only then did we truly realize how big he was as our guide pointed out that he was a seven-footer!

Grabbing the branches, he rubbed them against his scent glands located around his eyes, alerting others that there is a big male in the area and based on how high the source of the scent, the size of the male laying claim to the area. Bending the branches down might be seen as cheating, but if it keeps one from receiving more scars, I would do it too!

We tend to look at the past with rose-colored glasses. While there was a lot of cool stuff on railroads in the 1970s, it was actually a tough time as many were barely getting by. The Chicago & North Western was one of those roads. Just check out the bad track, old MOW equipment and Alcos on train 482 at Tyler Minnesota on Oct. 24, 1976. Luckily the railroad revival that took place in the 1980s and 1990s resulted in this track being rebuilt. It's operated today by Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern.

The Bank of England has just risen interest rates to 3%, the highest level for 14 years, in the run up to a winter of extortionate fuel prices and inflated food costs. We are forecast to be facing the longest recession since reliable records began, 100 years ago!

Inflationary pressures reported by the Bank of England include the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine as the BBC have reported. They also mention, which is neglected by mainstream media, that there are UK specific pressures (i.e. Brexit and the loss of benefits with our greatest trading partner). Also reported, significantly, is a large reduction in the labour workforce. More so than expected and a large increase since the last report from the Bank of England and they specifically mention that the vast majority is due to long term sickness. The US recently also reported that workplace productivity is down massively since pre-pandemic levels.

This is what 'living with Covid' means. Covid causes permanent internal damage and a conservative estimate by The Lancet is that "at least 145 million people worldwide have long COVID...". This is why China is pursuing a zero Covid strategy. They are well aware of the long-term damage to the labour workforce by SARS-nCov-2. Coronavirus is akin to a combination of SARS(1) and AIDS. The comments about airborne AIDS in early social media were not incorrect. This virus not only causes direct damage, it destroys T-cell protections in our immunity and leaves you incredibly vulnerable to further infections, with the same mechanism that occurs in HIV/AIDS. The virus shares some RNA of HIV in itself and this was evident from the start.

It doesn't take a genius to work out what this is doing to the workforce and China will emerge as a global powerhouse if they continue the zero Covid path.

A huge number of people are going to suffer this winter. A lot of ordinary people trying their best to make ends meet. Meanwhile the rich get richer, pay less, avoid taxes and reap the benefits of a government more invested in that top 1% than the millions and millions of ordinary working people.

Very tough times ahead. Please stay safe in this crazy world my Flickr friends.

28:366 - Tough Love

In order to love someone, you must sometimes tell them no.

Ever been asked to do something that went against what your gut told you to do? Maybe it was a loved one, a coworker, your boss? Was this something hurtful to you

or them? Did it compromise your beliefs, your morals or your goals?

Today at the zoo, I had such a problem. I was snacking on some popcorn in front of this poor creature. He did everything he could to communicate to me what his wants were. He tried to convince me that not only did he WANT the popcorn, he actually desperately NEEDED it also. He gave me the saddest eyes I had ever seen.

It broke my heart!

But I knew that what he wanted me to do was wrong. Not only could it hurt him or make him sick, but it would be compromising my own sense of self. I love animals. I could not hurt one intentionally!

There are times when we are in situations like this. Not necessarily with a cute debrazza's monkey trying to get our salty snack. But most often with people we love asking us for something that we know is wrong to give them. It could be a child asking to stay up late on a school night or a spouse asking you to fudge the numbers on your taxes. There are somethings that are okay to say yes to, but you really need to ask yourself where you draw the line BEFORE such questions are asked. And make sure you know the consequences of your decision.

Sometimes when confronted with a difficult situation, it might be better to take your time in giving an answer. Don't allow yourself to be pressured by the strong emotions that you think might complicate things if you say no. Once you give in once, it can be harder to say no the next time. Give yourself a chance to take a risk and do what you know is right. If you are unsure, ask someone that is neutral to the situation.

Love is hard sometimes. It comes with so many emotions that can be very intense. You become tied to that person and you don't want to hurt them. But you have to remember that if you say yes to something that can cause harm, you are hurting them and yourself in the long run.

I could have said yes to the monkey. I could have given him a little piece of popcorn without anyone knowing I did it. But I would have known. How horrible it would have felt to wonder if he would have gotten sick. And even if I tried to convince myself that he would not have been hurt, inside I would have known I had made a decision that was wrong and went against my beliefs. And I would not have been able to take it back.

I had to say no to the monkey, regardless of how much pain the look in his eyes might have caused me. I couldn't allow his display of emotions manipulate my decision. Once I threw away my popcorn container, the monkey went back to his own meal of fruit. No big deal. Although a few minutes earlier, he was trying to tell me that his world was shattering, in the end, he was unchanged.

Next time, when you see the pleading eyes of someone that is asking you for something impossible, remember that you have the power to make the right choice. Because you love them.

Love your children with all your hearts, love them enough to discipline them before it is too late ... Praise them for important things, even if you have to stretch them a bit. Praise them a lot. Your visits are much appreciated.

It has been a while since I have been out and about taking pictures. With the cold spell over I will have to get out there, but for the mean time a dip into the archives.

Taken this past Autumn, my buddy Dean stopped in for a quick visit. Seeing he had brought his thunder machine (yep it is pretty loud), I knew I had to get a shot. He really is a big softie, but I asked him for a tough look. Converting to B&W I was able to get away with boosting contrast to perhaps give a bit more of a dramatic look.

I really don't know anything about motorcycles, but I have to admit that they can look pretty cool.

This is about as hard as it can get I think for taking the long exposures. The thin band of light that is so dynamic against the remaining scene. When I exposed the 30 second exposure prior to this one and saw the histogram, I knew that adding a 4 stop ND I would be able to get about 4 minutes ... but this time of the morning can be tough as it continually is getting brighter by the minute. This I decided to end this one just after 3 minutes.

It was at least bright enough after this capture was done to hike back off the rocks without a flashlight ...

From this view easy to see why this section of the path is so tough and so satisfying to walk at the same time. The path regularly plunges down to sea only to climb straight back up to the next headland.
