Top of my sock

The roofs in Pompei collapsed under the weight of falling ash, only a few centimetres of ash fell on Herculaneum, causing little damage. Subsequently, there was a succession of six pyroclastic flows (a mixture of ash and gases) which then solidified. These gradually buried the city's buildings from the bottom up, causing relatively little damage. The good state of preservation of the site is due to its rapid filling by these flows, which prevented the buildings from collapsing.

All of these are from a road trip, when i was 14, to Alaska. It was sort of my bos mitzvah present.

From the ferry, on the way up the alaskan coast. I have NO idea what town this is. We drove straight across the country, CT to Seattle, fairly fast, then took the ferry up to Anchorage, and drove around for a bit- then down across Canada back home again.

and another..

Not at full zoom as I couldnt fit the entire mini beastie into the frame. So a bit of a zoom out and it fits niceley and also gets a little more Depth to the image as aposed to the ristrictive 1mm or so at full zoom.

I like it, simple and detaild and not full of flash light reflection like some others I took.

Taken with Raynox DCR-150 Macro attached :)

So Holmes was right about plumes but wrong about mid-oceanic seafloor spreading. It is now generally agreed that slab pull / subduction is the dominant driving force for plate motion. A real game changer. A lot of diagrams are going to have to be redrawn!
