I feel very lucky to have been able to see and photograph Tom Petty, who I grew up listening to a lot when I was a kid, before he died. I'm also still not quite over his death......

The massive rock formation in the picture is "Ship Rock", which forms the south "wall" of the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. There are 70 tiered seating rows to the top, and for some reason I decided to walk each row rather than climb the stairs outright. In 90+ degrees heat at mid-day sun, and an elevation of 6450 feet (1965m), it was quite a slog (I passed by 9525 "seats" in the walk).
Red Rocks Amphitheathre is an outdoor entertainment venue that was provided by Mother Nature, and has been used since 1906. The modern configuration of the venue was constructed under the ownership of the City of Denver, from 1936 to 1942.
Because of the unique setting, and great acoustics provided by three naturally-formed 300-foot rocks (Ship Rock, Stage Rock, and Creation Rock), many TV performances, movies and recordings have been made at Red Rocks.
Nearly every major recording artist has performed at Red Rocks since the 1960's Beatles show. Stage bills, posters and signed memorabilia are on display at the onsite Colorado Music Hall of Fame. I named only a few of the groups (ones that I liked) in the "Tags".
Must admit, I’m not entirely sure what this is, I think it’s some kind of beauty scrubby thing! Anyway, I’ve always thought it looks kind of cool, so I lit a small section of it with an orange gel.
HMM!
I love country music, but I didn't have anything to shoot, so I searched songs with my name.... and found this Tom Petty song, that I never heard and glad I found... I took a picture of this on my phone, so it made the size requirements....
I doctored it up a bit for the challenge!
Here I am walking alone, but my lockdown dream is that one day soon, we can all walk together without the fear of covid...
Pretty much the only blooms left in our garden this year and thankfully we haven’t dead headed this hydrangea yet!
I shot this outdoors in bad light but decided to shoot another set to get a sharper image. Didn’t like the second indoors version though as there wasn’t as much difference of colour between the faded sections of the petals.
Anyway, I’d decided not to go for a vibrant image for this theme to reflect the time of year.
There's some friends that I know
Living in this town
And I've come far to see them
Gonna track 'em down
They live in a brick house
Painted white and brown.

Another legend and personal favorite gone. RIP Tom Petty
Well I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone
And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
And the town lit up, the world got still
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Well the good ol' days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I've started out for God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free...

I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

"Last time through I hid my tracks.
So well I could not get back.
Yeah my way was hard to find.
Can't sell your soul for peace of mind.
[Chorus:]
Square one, my slate is clear.
Rest your head on me my dear.
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears.
It took a long time to get back here..."

This version of the song is by Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison (George Harrison's son), if you're interested :) Prince does a mean guitar solo at the end. Sadly, a few of these wonderful musicians are no longer with us.
HMBT!
Your hand was a weapon
Within a sturdy cross
A blue study transformed as if
Matisse had turned violent in a fit of passion
We felt the building might be condemned
There were notices on pieces of flimsy paper
Exteriors made by humans were now crumbling
And still there was that implicit threat
An outstretched hand transformed with a weapon
I said to Jesus
“I’ve given up. Stop! You’ve tangled my emotions!”
God has all of the answers and leaves us with only questions
And the feeling of helplessness.
I’ve given up on waiting any longer.
Whatever you’re looking for…..
Don’t come around here no more.

Well, she was an American girl.
Raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinkin' that there
was a little more to life
somewhere else.

The long abandoned house on the prairie was pretty empty except for this badly decayed chair in an upstairs bedroom. As the cold wind was rushing through those open windows,we wondered just how long the wait had been...
Thanks again to good friend Aces & Eights for letting me tag along to this amazing prairie relic-it was like Kansas, just a few hundred miles east....
Will's take on the prairie house(so far)...

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America, too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend, too
And it's a long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart
And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
All the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts
And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I'm gonna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while
And I'm free (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Free fallin' (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Yeah I'm free (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Free fallin' (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
(Now I'm)
Yeah, I'm free, free fallin'
Oh! Free fallin'
Now I'm free fallin'
Free fallin'
(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
And I'm free
(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Oh, free fallin'
(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')

"You Don't Know How It Feels" by Tom Petty
Let me run with you tonight
I'll take you on a moonlight ride
There's someone I used to see
But she don't give a damn for me
But let me get to the point, let's roll another joint
And turn the radio loud, I'm too alone to be proud
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

Some photos deserve a second look. Especially this American Girl. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXkblbJqwn0
Dear Tom Petty,
When I was young, the only way my mother could begin to describe the concept of "sexy" was by talking about you and Neil Young's voice (only ever his voice-she thought he was uglier than sin, right mom?) Your songs and videos were first like from an all American poet but then they got a little weirder and I liked them even more-like "Zombie Zoo" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" but overall you were a storyteller that had a hopefulness for the world despite all its mixed up characters. And, that is quite sexy, I have to admit.
When I went to photograph you in 2014, I kept expecting something to not work out and it ended up being a very pinch me is this real sort of experience. I grew up on your records, after all. You were the all American musician, the dreamer and redeemer and even as an adult I get refrains and chord progressions stuck easily into my head. You got us humans right because you felt it all too.
Dear Tom Petty, the world is a screwed up place. Our politicians have no integrity and would rather have people killed than lose their money from the gun lobby. People have no time for common sense or poetry these days. They have no time to feel anything for their fellow man or woman or for words that actually make them think. They would rather start fights with their fellow man or woman over nothing more than genetics. They don't understand the feeling of bliss when you don't harbor hatred in your heart but instead make it a home for love and acceptance. Maybe you don't belong in this world anymore. Maybe you belong somewhere better. But we'll miss you so much.
Love,
Kirstiecat

1989 when the song was released. freshman in high school. old enough to show the proper disdain reserved for The Valley. immature enough to think this song belonged more to us than anyone else because of our proximity to Hollywood. foolish enough to wish so much to be as beautiful and as aloof cool as the girl in the video.

both photos taken at Griffith Park Observatory at dusk. i believe you can catch a glimpse of Mulholland Drive when standing at this fence looking west.
A screenshot from Twitter this time... (there's been more than enough "this time"s for 2017).
Tom Petty's music, much like that of the late David Bowie and Prince, was something I grew up with, and heard so much, I just kind of took it for granted that these great talents would always be around. For an excellent list of Tom Petty songs, check out the tribute here.
