Sitting at the very tip of north Oxfordshire, close to its border with Warwickshire, Shenington is a very beautiful and quiet place. Built on a hill, the houses cottages and church are scattered around a large and peaceful village green. Close to the escarpment of Edge Hill the area has many attractive footpaths, including the Macmillan Way and the D'Arcy Dalton Way which both pass through the village.

This photo, and the others that accompany it in my photostream, are from a startling and disturbing exhibit of figures by artist Tip Toland portraying the persecution of people with albinism in Zambia. According to the exhibit, these people have been mutilated for their body parts, which are then used by shamans to create potions believed to benefit users; there have been efforts to reform these human rights abuses, but they still live in terror. Portland Art Museum, Oregon. The exhibit must be seen in person to realize the full impact of the large, life-like sculptures.

Top tip- use the polystyrene packaging from a pizza to let your children design their own pizza. "Daddy we're making you a pizza."

"But you can't eat it because it's got a dead penguin on it."

"And lots of hot salami sauce." #pizza #design #penguin #artsandcrafts #twins #colour #colouringin #deadpenguin #funny #salamisauce #sirachi #hotsauce #foodie

Artist's Statement

My work is an attempt to give voice to inner psychological and/or spiritual states of being. What is of primary importance to me is that the figures contain particular aspects of humanity which they can mirror back to the viewer. It's the vulnerability of Humanity I am after. That is one reason for choosing very old or very young subjects. They both can portray innocence as well as extreme complexity.

Often they seem best portrayed as dolls. This can remove them one step from being so literal yet still allow the psychological weight. Perhaps that is something not noticed immediately yet allows the viewer easier access. To myself I can muse about the viewers engagement with them as dolls however It is the felt response I am after in every case.

Just The Tip Spruced Wheat from Breakside Brewery was my 22nd of ‪#‎31beers‬ for Oregon Craft Beer Month. Over 60 lbs of handpicked Oregon spruce tips were used in the making of this beer. Breakside claims that "this beer is like the Pacific Northwest in a glass," I claim that it's delicious.

somewhere in Illinois, a couple of hours before we hit Indiana.

We'd just driven through a seriously dark storm with multispeed, multilayered clouds twisting and turning into something with an ominous look to it. Just after I snapped this photo (and a couple of others) we found a radio station giving a current weather update.

The update? 50 or so miles away there had been a tornado touchdown. The winds were gusting at 60mph, and it was going to be crappy before it got better.

KD and I both were relieved that the direction in which we were traveling happened not to be the same direction in which the storm was going.

We happened by this tipped-over semi just after it had tipped - an ambulance was on the scene but police had not yet arrived. We wished safe thoughts toward the driver, continuing on our way.

*image was lightened greatly or none of us would have been able to figure out what was beyond the pickup truck.
