Many of the traditional buildings in Sri Lanka have attractive pantilled roofs, reminiscent of those in parts of continental Europe and, closer to me, 19th century cottages in East Lothian.

I understand that these Sri Lankan factories use coconut husks as a fuel for making the tiles, and perhaps the mud is collected locally in the calm lagoonal waters.

Originally given by the Dog's owner Ben Sharpe. Legend says Prince Cornwallis saved a child from drowning, but more likely the dog carried a collecting tin and raised money for the old children's ward of the Buchannan Hospital

Tilings of the Poincaré Disk are of interest to both mathematicians and artists. M.C. Escher, inspired by the work of the mathematician H.S.M. Coxeter, created four wood carvings based on tilings of the Poincaré disk titled Circle Limit I-IV.

The mathematics of such tilings has been extensively studied. While several papers have described how to create graphical tilings of the Poincaré disk using computers, there are a number of reasons why those techniques present difficulties for tiling photographs. In particular, the techniques are primarily intended for vector graphics or low resolution images, and are extremely inefficient for rendering large, high-resolution images. Recently, van Gagern and Richter-Gebert published the first description of an algorithm to efficiently render large tilings using a technique they described as reverse pixel lookup. However, they also only considered graphic tilings and their approach can generate significant visual artifacts due to rounding errors and aliasing problems.

I've created a program that efficiently renders photographic tilings and deals with these rounding and aliasing problems. Check out the large version to see improved visual details.

I've made my code available if anybody would like to try to create some of these images. A package that includes all of the source code, a win32 executable, a technical document describing how these images are generated, and an example to get you started can be found here on SourceForge.

I also created a Flickr group for these images here. If you try out the program, please post your results in this group.

We stayed at a temple during our stay at Hachiman (they had normal hotel-style rooms but the bath was down the road and a normal Japanese sento style). I found an interesting mark in one of the tiles on the roof (which our room overlooked - I didn't spend my time in Hachiman clambering about hotel roofs).

Progress on my bathroom tiling project is the best Christmas present...years in the visualizing and two trips to Tubac's Cermic Tile shop buying sets of things, we finally laid it all out about two weeks ago on the floor, and have placed them on their respectivve squares on the wall, using digital images, too, to remember...Emerson has been a great sport about this meticulously slow approach.

Ahhhh... completion of a L O N G tile project.

In the “far” tunnel at Stratford station — the one furthest away from the ticket barriers — the entrance to each platform has the platform number displayed on the wall in white-on-yellow tiles. They’re really well done and look great. I still haven’t worked out the typeface the designs are derived from, though (it’s definitely not TfL’s standard Johnston).

I’m really pleased with how this turned out. The original file from the camera was pretty disgusting as the auto white balance couldn’t cope with the mixture of fluorescent and natural light, leaving a murky orange cast. You could barely make out the number on the tiles, but thanks to the wonders of RAW it was easily fixed in iPhoto.

Tile guys were HOT and Eastern European.... some kind of Russian/Balkan type. I was a stuttering mess all day.

Originally used to prevent moisture and humidity from penetrating building facades, these tiles are now a common ornamental element of architecture in both small villages and cities around the country.

These are examples of older tiles with interesting and colorful repeat patterns.

If you're going to cut a tile in place like this use an angle grinder with a diamond blade. Worked like a charm. (IMG_1460)

Unfortunately, i've lost picture of them in the kiln, but this is how i stacked the tiles. They are quite thick, as you notice. I used about 25% grog. Pallets are a must. I only recommend 3/4" drywall; the 1/2" gets really weak when it gets wet. If all you have is 1/2" then double it up.
