Shimizu Kannon (Important Cultural Property) is a temple worshiping Senjyu Kannon (Thousand Armed Avalokiteshwara).

Located near Ueno Park, statue of Takamori Saigo, and was built in 1631.

The Omizuya (御水舎) or Sacred Fountain or Water House, features a tsukubai where, in accordance with Shintō practice, worshippers would practice ritual purification by rinsing their hands and mouth with the water. The water spits out of the mouth of a dragon sculpture. a hand washing trough with a dragon shaped water pipe. On the base of the trough is an owl design, which explains why the water from the dragon's mouth is often call "Owl Water".

Niō-mon (仁王門), or the Deva Gate, is the main gate to Kiyomizudera. On both sides of the gate are 4-meter tall statues of Niō warrior gods, or Deva Kings or Diamond Kings. As guardian deities of the Buddha, it is written in the sutras (holy scriptures) that they were assigned to guard the gate. The open-mouthed statue o, pronouncing the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, ah, is called "Agyo", meaning beginning or birth. The closed-mouth statue, pronouncing the last letter, un, is called "Ungyo", meaning the ending or death.

Kiyomizudera is best known for its Butai (舞台), literally dancing stage, a wooden veranda, that supported by huge zelkova-tree pillars, juts out from the Hondo, or main hall, 12 meters above the hillside below. The Butai fronts the Hondo, flanked by two wings that run the entire width of the building. Both the Hondo and the Butai were built without the use of a single nail.

The Hondo is centered around its principal image of worship, a small eleven-faced, thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Kannon Bosatsu, flanked by his 28 followers. The Kannon, though, is only shown once every 33 years (one year for every vow Kannon took to save mankind). The main images are surrounded by the nai-nai-jin (innermost sanctuary) at the cemter, then the nai-jin (inner sanctuary) and then finally the ge-jin (outer sanctuary). The uniquely famous architecture of the Hondo is dominated by the huge hinoki (Japanese cypress) shingled roof with scalloped corners.

Beneath the main hall is the Otowa-no-taki (音羽の滝), literally the Sound of Feathers Waterfall, where three channels of water from a flow thousands of years old fall into a pond. Drinking from all three streams is said to confer wisdom, health, and longevity. However, some believe that you must choose only two; if you are greedy and drink from all three, you invite misfortune upon yourself.

Kiyomizudera (清水寺), or the "Pure Water Temple," officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera (音羽山清水寺), an independent Buddhist temple, was founded in 780 on the site of the Otawa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto. Its present buildings were constructed in 1633, during a restoration ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. Originally associated with the Hossō sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism dating from Nara times, it formed its own Kita Hossō sect in 1965, and its present custodians call themselves Kitahossō.

Sanju-no-to (三重塔), or the three-storied pagoda, was rebuilt in 1632 and repaired in 1987. As the largest three-storied pagoda in Japan, it is an outstanding example of the grandeur of the architectural revival movement that occurred during the early Edo period. The structure contains an image of Dainichi Nyorai (Great Sun Buddha).

Kyo-do (田村堂), or the Sutra Hall, was rebuilt in 1633 along with the main hall. The hall acts as a repository for all Buddhist sutras (sacred scriptures) and has a trinity of Shakyamuni Buddha enshrined within. A famous painting of a coiled dragon can be seen on the ceiling.

Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage or veranda, that, supported by tall pillars, juts out from its main hall 13 meters above the hillside below. The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of a single nail, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon. Beneath the main hall is the Otowa waterfall, where three channels of water fall into a pond. Drinking the water of the three streams is said to confer wisdom, health, and longevity.

Kiyomizudera, along with 16 other locations across Kyōto, Uji and Ōtsu, comprise the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities), designated in 1994. In 2007, it was selected as one of 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Matho Monastery.

Lama Dugpa Dorje founded the Matho Gompa of Ladakh in the 16th century. It is situated on the opposite bank of the River Indus, at a distance of approximately 26 km to the southeast of Leh town. Matho is the only gompa of Ladakh that belongs to the Saskya order of Tibetan Buddhism. The oracle of the monastery is a priest, who resides in the monastery itself. Also situated near the monastery, are a number of sacred shrines, of which one is dedicated to the guardian deities.

Matho Monastery of Leh Ladakh hosts the Matho Nagrang Festival, on an annual basis. The festival takes place on the 14th and 15th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar. All the monks participate in the sacred dances, performed at this annual event. It is believed that, during Matho Nagrang Festival, two gods, known as the Rongtsan, descend to visit the monastery. Matho Monastery also boasts of housing an amazingly rich collection of four hundred years old Thankas.

On the right side of the monastery courtyard, is the entrance to the Dukhang (the main assembly hall). Paintings of the Guardians of the Four Directions adorn the verandah of the Dukhang. Inside are two rows of seats for the lamas, along with a throne seat that is reserved for the Rimpoche, the head lama of Matho. There are four statues behind the throne seat, that of the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara, Maitreya, Sakyamuni and a blessing Buddha. The entrance wall displays Mahakala, the fiercest Buddhist guardian divinity, on the left and other protecting deities, on the right.

Matho Monastery.

Lama Dugpa Dorje founded the Matho Gompa of Ladakh in the 16th century. It is situated on the opposite bank of the River Indus, at a distance of approximately 26 km to the southeast of Leh town. Matho is the only gompa of Ladakh that belongs to the Saskya order of Tibetan Buddhism. The oracle of the monastery is a priest, who resides in the monastery itself. Also situated near the monastery, are a number of sacred shrines, of which one is dedicated to the guardian deities.

Matho Monastery of Leh Ladakh hosts the Matho Nagrang Festival, on an annual basis. The festival takes place on the 14th and 15th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar. All the monks participate in the sacred dances, performed at this annual event. It is believed that, during Matho Nagrang Festival, two gods, known as the Rongtsan, descend to visit the monastery. Matho Monastery also boasts of housing an amazingly rich collection of four hundred years old Thankas.

On the right side of the monastery courtyard, is the entrance to the Dukhang (the main assembly hall). Paintings of the Guardians of the Four Directions adorn the verandah of the Dukhang. Inside are two rows of seats for the lamas, along with a throne seat that is reserved for the Rimpoche, the head lama of Matho. There are four statues behind the throne seat, that of the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara, Maitreya, Sakyamuni and a blessing Buddha. The entrance wall displays Mahakala, the fiercest Buddhist guardian divinity, on the left and other protecting deities, on the right.

Inspired by the magnificent Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, Ueno Kiyomizu Kannon-do 清水観音堂 was established by Abbot Tenkai Sojo, who was also the founder of the Kanei-ji Temple.

Built in 1631, the architecture is similar but structurally is a much smaller scale compares to its model. Miraculously, this Buddhist temple made it through the battles of civil war and air bombing raids. Today, Ueno Kiyomizu Kannon-do is recognized as the national treasure and one of the oldest temples in Tokyo.

The principal image of this temple is the figure of Senju Kannon or 'Thousand Armed Goddess of Mercy', similar to the original temple in Kyoto. Another image of worship enshrined here is or better known as 'Goddess of Child-rearing'. She receives a greater homage and is sought after by the women whom have difficulty in conceiving. To those whom had their wishes fulfilled, they would return with a doll for offering as a gesture of thanking and at the same praying for good health of their children.

Every year on September 25, a ceremony is conducted to burn all the dolls accumulated in the year.

The Hondo is centered around its principal image of worship, a small eleven-faced, thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Kannon Bosatsu, flanked by his 28 followers. The Kannon, though, is only shown once every 33 years (one year for every vow Kannon took to save mankind). The main images are surrounded by the nai-nai-jin (innermost sanctuary) at the cemter, then the nai-jin (inner sanctuary) and then finally the ge-jin (outer sanctuary). The uniquely famous architecture of the Hondo is dominated by the huge hinoki (Japanese cypress) shingled roof with scalloped corners.

Beneath the main hall is the Otowa-no-taki (音羽の滝), literally the Sound of Feathers Waterfall, where three channels of water from a flow thousands of years old fall into a pond. Drinking from all three streams is said to confer wisdom, health, and longevity. However, some believe that you must choose only two; if you are greedy and drink from all three, you invite misfortune upon yourself.

Kiyomizudera, along with 16 other locations across Kyōto, Uji and Ōtsu, comprise the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities), designated in 1994. In 2007, it was selected as one of 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.
