Seems as though I can't get away from these types of shots because..well...I like em so much. Took this one last december on a outing with

The Squashed one, at Long Reef on Syndeys North Shore. The day started out pretty ordinary with not a single cloud in the sky, but then about 20 mins later, a massive front came though from the south (not sure if that sounds too good). Turned out to be a bit of fun indeed.

Its a single exposure using a Cokin GND8 and Circ Polarizer.

Though I have heard the Common Yellowthroat, this is the first one this year I have caught out in the open.

Though this Roseate Spoonbill kept turning away from the sun.

Though Round Bald has few trees other than balsams and mountain ash at the top, it is still a must on my autumn travels in the Blue Ridge… what do you think?

A bald eagle flies into late afternoon light along Lake Yellowstone.

Best when viewed large.

Though no one is saying it, I believe the election was rolled. trump even said to a group that he didn't need their votes early on, adding he had enough votes and they would never need to vote again.

This election was rolled. It is a blatant coup

Even though these birds mate for life, at the beginning of every breeding season; a courtship ritual will happen to strengthen the bond. This might manifest itself through preening (as shown in my photo), other forms or physical contact or offering “gifts” (usually sticks or stones) to each other.

As this shot was taken at the very beginning of their breeding season a few months ago, hopefully by now this couple has succeeded in raising one or multiple offspring.

Though this is over a year ago, J783 can still be seen with SD40’s pretty common. Though this October morning was early and cold, great friends make this hobby awesome.

Loons have four basic calls, though there are some variations. All calls are given by both males and females, except for the yodel that can only be produced by males. The call begins with three notes that rise slowly and are followed by several undulating phrases.

My first time seeing the Loons back is a feeling I can't explain. I know that any year could be the last for them. I called out to the male with my loon call and he answered me. I video taped him, then played it back to him and he dived over as fast as he could from the other side of the lake circling my Yak. It is too bad it clouded over but that didn't hamper what it felt like to see him. This is my first time catching the yodel up close. It comes from the deep depths of his belly, and as he leans into it rounding his back, he thrusts out an evocative sound saying, "This is my territory!" I get goosebumps every time. He figured out it was just me and did his happy dance then proceeded to preen himself which is a sign that a Loon is comfortable in your presence.

Though it looks like all the other pygmy-owls, the Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl has a distinct double-note song and occurs only in a very narrow elevation range in western Colombia and Ecuador where it is quite rare. We were ecstatic to locate a bird just off the side of the road that cooperated for pictures. Montezuma Road, Tatamá National Park, Colombia

My first play with a Canon R7 at Catcott today... (Thanks Steve for letting me have a go with your new toy).

An un-tweaked image, just converted to JPEG at 95% quality in 'Fastone image viewer', a bit of a revelation. Nice colours and detail, eye-tracking and focus locking jolly useful for composition of a static subject like this one. Coped with the whites very well. So mostly all good at f8... things were a bit different at f5.6, very soft around the gills, but to be expected with the lens-TC combo s'pose.

As for birds in flight, it worked well when a gull flew straight in and over, but quite a high miss rate when a few egrets flew across left to right at near and middle distances and with reeds in the background, I guess this is just a setting thing though. I'm sure this was more down to me than the camera, which has more buttons, knobs and wheels than your average TV remote. No idea what I was pressing or what they did, or why I was even pressing them.

Nice to have a bucket load of extra pixels to play with too.

I'm sure with a little time, this digital beast will be mastered, and I'll find a few settings that avoid shutter shock and roll syndrome that will work well for static, macro and in flight shots.... In the meantime, I'll just have to rely on field craft and my trusty old 7D Mkii.

R7 Now on the Christmas list. :@)

Though Lyme Hall itself is very grand, most visitors are drawn to the the hunting lodge known as The Cage, which dates from around 1580 and has stunning views for miles around

Though we get to see beautiful sunrises most of the days, it was bit rare! As the sun was coming up, it got hidden behind the clouds. The sunrise, in between hills and the clouds, could see only for a few seconds and luckily I could take a shot.

Sparrowhawk - Accipiter Nisus

Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches, and sparrows; females catch primarily thrushes and starlings, but are capable of killing birds weighing 500 g (18 oz) or more.

The Eurasian sparrowhawk is found throughout the temperate and subtropical parts of the Old World; while birds from the northern parts of the range migrate south for winter, their southern counterparts remain resident or make dispersive movements. Eurasian sparrowhawks breed in suitable woodland of any type, with the nest, measuring up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) across, built using twigs in a tree. Four or five pale blue, brown-spotted eggs are laid; the success of the breeding attempt is dependent on the female maintaining a high weight while the male brings her food. The chicks hatch after 33 days and fledge after 24 to 28 days.

The probability of a juvenile surviving its first year is 34%, with 69% of adults surviving from one year to the next. Mortality in young males is greater than that of young females and the typical lifespan is four years. This species is now one of the most common birds of prey in Europe, although the population crashed after the Second World War. Organochlorine insecticides used to treat seeds before sowing built up in the bird population, and the concentrations in Eurasian sparrowhawks were enough to kill some outright and incapacitate others; affected birds laid eggs with fragile shells which broke during incubation. However, its population recovered after the chemicals were banned, and it is now relatively common, classified as being of Least Concern by BirdLife International.

The Eurasian sparrowhawk's hunting behaviour has brought it into conflict with humans for hundreds of years, particularly racing pigeon owners and people rearing poultry and gamebirds. It has also been blamed for decreases in passerine populations. The increase in population of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk coincides with the decline in House Sparrows in Britain. Studies of racing pigeon deaths found that Eurasian sparrowhawks were responsible for less than 1%. Falconers have utilised the Eurasian sparrowhawk since at least the 16th century; although the species has a reputation for being difficult to train, it is also praised for its courage. The species features in Teutonic mythology and is mentioned in works by writers including William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes.

Male Eurasian sparrowhawks regularly kill birds weighing up to 40 g (1.4 oz) and sometimes up to 120 g (4.2 oz); females can tackle prey up to 500 g (18 oz) or more. The weight of food consumed by adult birds daily is estimated to be 40–50 g (1.4–1.8 oz) for males and 50–70 g (1.8–2.5 oz) for females. During one year, a pair of Eurasian sparrowhawks could take 2,200 house sparrows, 600 common blackbirds or 110 wood pigeons. Species that feed in the open, far from cover, or are conspicuous by their behaviour or coloration, are taken more often by Eurasian sparrowhawks. For example, great tits and house sparrows are vulnerable to attack. Eurasian sparrowhawks may account for more than 50% of deaths in certain species, but the extent varies from area to area.

Males tend to take tits, finches, sparrows and buntings; females often take thrushes and starlings. Larger quarry (such as doves and magpies) may not die immediately but succumb during feather plucking and eating. More than 120 bird species have been recorded as prey and individual Eurasian sparrowhawks may specialise in certain prey. The birds taken are usually adults or fledglings, though chicks in the nest and carrion are sometimes eaten. Small mammals, including bats, are sometimes caught but insects are eaten only very rarely.

who sings, or grasped in what language the lyrics are.

I have followed the voices through forests of lethal green,

but the sweeter the note, the note is more far - more far."

Happy New Year to all!

Though a very common bird and that's when he sits still they still make for a nice bird to photograph, during our way out of the Hunter Valley Wetlands with good ole mate Archie McCafferty :-)

Though 'H' was at his dad's the weekend past, I was feeling a bit meh ....and a bit frozen so even though it would really do me no good I didn't go out Saturday bar Hero's little walks, the little shop down the road and a quick venture to the front garden for some macro.....By Sunday I was a right grumpy sod- so with warnings I'd be late back for 'H's drop off I went for my weekend walkies - sorry I meant I took Hero for his weekend walkies 😁

Though not the last, it is still the remainig easily seen pictograph on a rock panel in San Diego County, California. There are a few ever so faint and a hint of many others. The protective lip of granite protected this one from sun and weather.

‘tis the best time though isn’t it ❤️ cosy, darker nights, pumpkin scented candles, fire pits glowing their embers after warming the colder nights….and the colours n the daylight, more golden warmth as we appreciate the last touches of the bygone summer heat (😂) well for me as it’s either too hot or too cold really 😁 the crisp of the leaves underfoot and oh my id forgotten how wonderfully more ish the earth with its fallen carpet from the canopy’s above….that smell 👌….I woke up the other morning and the grass was wet…it’s definitely happening….and this year when it all settles down again I’ve got Hero to accompany my Autumn Adventures from crisp colourful walks to cosy nights in…..he’s become quite the one for a groom, seems hooman H’s baby hairbrush feels the best ❤️

Even though I won't be posting any pictures, I will occasionally try to check in and look at what everyone else is doing. Wish you a happy next 10 days.

Though to be honest I wish it was hitting the other side!

Though I was in random mode the last couple of days, I realize that the last two posts have something in common. So I'm continuing that theme with this shot. I won't reveal it here, but I imagine my Flickr friends will probably have no problem figuring out what these shots have in common.

This is a Gould's Wild Turkey, found in Madera Canyon, southern Arizona.

Even though we are miles apart,

You are never far from my heart.

I loved you then,

I love you now.

It's always when

And never how.

I see your eyes,

I feel you near,

Although you're not

Really here.

Though winter's grip holds fast and cold,

A silent promise, brave and bold,

The hellebore, a verdant gleam,

Awakens from a winter dream

Sometimes when I'm at a loss for a title, I will look for a poem about the subject to give me ideas. So I searched "Hellebore poetry" and in the blink of an eye, a four stanza poem popped up. Above is the first stanza, not exactly Shakespeare - written by AI

It's a new world, sigh...

Though this Barred Owl looks sort of glum, It had just lifted its head after a fairly long while staring down at the swampy area beneath the tree, no doubt hunting for voles.

... though which one I am at a loss to say.(Now ID'd as Ringlet - thank you Dave and Thierry)

This one was one of a number (10 or 12) flittering about in the moorland grasses at the edge of woodland at about 290m in the Peak District. Just managed this hurried shot before the darker underside of the folded wings was shown and into flight again.

At Reflection Riding Arboretum in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

though i can’t choose a favorite poem, i do have a favorite poet: mary oliver. the last line of her poem, “in blackwater woods,” has been on my mind and in my heart: “to live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.”

[34:52, choose your favorite poem and try to represent a line of it visually]

Even though it's called a Polaroid Sun it doesn't really like the sun much, not a great dynamic range.

Anyway, I scanned this little chap using the new Google Photo Scan app and even though it looks like a fail it's actually a great representation of the original.

Though there's gold up in the mountains,

precious pearls deep in the sea,

those treasures do not mean as much

as your friendship means, to me.

♫ The Troggs - Love Is All Around ♫

I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes

Well love is all around me, and so the feeling grows

It's written on the wind, it's everywhere I go

So if you really love me, come on and let it show

You know I love you, I always will

My mind's made up by the way that I feel

There's no beginning, there'll be no end

'Cause on my love you can depend

I see your face before me as I lay on my bed

I kinda get to thinking, of all the things you said

You gave your promise to me, and I gave mine to you

I need someone beside me in everything I do

You know I love you, I always will

My mind's made up by the way that I feel

There's no beginning, there'll be no end

'Cause on my love you can depend

It's written on the wind, it's everywhere I go

So if you really love me, come on and let it show

Come on and let it show

Come on and let it show

Come on and let it show

Come on and let it show

Come on and let it show

Even though I love all seasons, when January rolls around my mind wanders to blossoms and endless sunlight! We've had a few sunny days but mostly snow and lots of it....remembering to treasure the present moment while still dreaming of those blossoms! Enjoy the day!

I'm always on the level though...
