I still feel new to this 'parenting' thing, in some ways... there are still 'firsts' to yet be experienced and this is one of them. This photo was taken a short while after hearing from my teen son, who is getting into dating, that he asked a girl he knows to be his girlfriend today... she said yes.
I do wonder how this will go for him. I know dating can be fun, but too it can lead to heartbreak. I think I have prepped him in some ways... told him that between now and adult life he will probably date many so don't look at this one as the only one... it is very likely only the start. Too... I don't want him to be too fickle and not take time to get to know people ... I don't want him to be the one that dates many and comits to no one. I hope he can find the middle ground... and be a decent person to those he chooses to date and spend time with. I think hubby and I have set good examples.
This was in the remote fields of Pangasinan along a dirt road when the cloud formation struck me as a hand catching grace coming from the heavens.
This is a new flowering plant of native Hemp Dogbane aka Indian Hemp (Apocynum cannabinum) in the Apocynaceae plant family. That's hemp as in fiber, not smoking. It's an uncommon plant in our mountains - I only know it from a few places. I wish the photo was taken in some uncommon habitat, but I found this one growing from a crack in the old asphalt of Kinevan Road! (San Marcos Pass, 6 June 2013)
This was one of the most important native plants for the native American Chumash in our mountains - for string, rope, nets, and clothing. For more info, see Jan Timbrook's book on Chumash Ethnobotany (2007).

Compare this professional photograph of me in my makeup and all glammed up with this photo of me taken by my mom while I was sick with the allergies:
this one had a sign called "low class dwelling" or something. clearly they didn't put too much effort into restoring this one
This was a great place to come for breakfast. I was starting to think Launceston had been a total waste of time but Stillwater revived my hope that every pocket of Tasmania might contain some foodie gem. We had a great table up the back and watched a sleepy stretch of river while we ate some really great food.
I finished two quick sewing projects yesterday. Two hours or so and $9 of awesome remnant linen gave me a new set of napkins and yet another pillowcase.
this is a composite of two shots, taken at the Portland zoo, sealion grotto. I've gotten the impression on flickr that it's sort of immoral or cheating to do this...oh, well. Here's one from the dark side. :)

This is awful .... I came across this shot from some years ago and now can't remember where I took it - decided I like the contrasts, so didn't delete it!
This cutie was bouncing about my kitchen. I approached in a calm, authoritative fashion, while speaking softly, and convinced it that I was not malevolent. Twenty minutes after release, I was in the back yard and it returned, scrutinizing me at a distance ranging from 5 to 15 feet for a period of 4 to 5 minutes.
**Its plumage is best appreciated in the 'large' size.**
Life is good.
A bit of research shows it to be a female Calliope Hummingbird.
This was originally a color photo. I converted it to black and white, emphasizing the contrast of light and shadow. Downtown Portland, Oregon.
This is the lighting for this shot of a Platy Fry.
Strobist: Gemini 4700 at 1/32 power, on stand above tank to camera right, zoomed "tight" pointed directly at the corner of the net, triggered w/GI Remote Triggers. A Sunpak 383 super at 1/16 power with a DIY grid spot was added to light my daughter's face. See the "poor man's" macro shot here.

Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum) - The Blind Trail (Ranger Station), Sandy Hook National Seashore, Fort Hancock, New Jersey
This guy is a rarity for New Jersey and was the first one posted to BugGuide from the tristate¹ area.
¹ Tristade area - A traffic radio nickname for the NYC (New York City) commuter zone which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York. However, it's not all that uncommon for eastern Pennsylvanians to ride interstate 78 the entire width of New Jersey to work in the Wall Street area of lower Manhattan, so there were also numerous Pennsylvanians (Eastonians) that died on 9/11.
