Templar Knight Lost

In a garden lost, a Templar knight wandered.

Long ago, he had lost his sword.

He had searched for centuries but could not find the Christ he sought.

In this garden, he searched for answers,

For the truth of dead men rising and angels who flew in the skies.

But all he found were shadows.

And all the bad things his virtue had done.

What on earth is Baphomet? Whatever the nature of this diabolical figure – the Knights Templar were accused of worshipping him, her or it!

Variously described as the head of John the Baptist; the head of a devil that talked; a many-faced demon; a cat; a prophet and possibly Jesus Christ. You name it – Baphomet has been linked. But most of us struggle to understand what exactly this demon is. All we know for sure is that during the trials of the Knights Templar between 1307 and 1314 – there were repeated allegations that the knights worshipped a curious head.

It seems there was more than one head. And some were carved while others were painted on the wall. If you read the accounts of the trials, the rituals with these heads were quite trippy. Almost as if the knights had dropped a tab of acid. This head spoke to them, commanding the Knights Templar to do its bidding.

That seemed to involve rather homoerotic and pornographic scenes that of course knights later confessed they were disgusted by – or coerced into. Yet we are no closer to knowing the true nature of Baphomet.

Did the Knights Templar steal Baphomet from Constantinople?

In the Fourth Crusade, a huge crusader force sacked the Christian city of Constantinople. This action was condemned by the Pope and flew in the face of the stated objective of the Crusades – to recover the Christian holy places from Muslim rule. Instead, another (very rich) Christian city was despoiled.

Once the crusaders got in to the city, they burnt and plundered with an unseemly ferocity and made a point of desecrating the ancient cathedral of the Hagia Sophia (holy wisdom). This included crowning a whore on the bishop’s throne. There is a contemporary description of this event:

Nay more, a certain harlot, a sharer in their guilt, a minister of the furies, a servant of the demons, a worker of incantations and poisonings, insulting Christ, sat in the patriarch’s seat, singing an obscene song and dancing frequently.

Did the Knights Templar make off with the head of Baphomet?

Constantinople was dripping with holy relics. If you wanted a crumb from the Last Supper or a fish from the miracle of the loaves and the fishes – this was the place! Could it be that during the destruction of the city, the Knights Templar acquired the head of Baphomet, which they subsequently worshipped in a heretical manner?

Sir Cedric, the old Templar, walked through the muddy ruins, feeling determined yet peaceful. As the dawn lit up the ancient relic ahead, memories of battles and prayers filled his mind.

With a firm grip on his mighty sword, he pressed on for his final mission.

I found myself suddenly caught off guard as the door swung open. I'd entered the Chapel to take a look around as the windows had looked very colourful from the outside.

I was unsure why, but I had a strong urge to hide as I heard what seemed like two pairs of heavy boots striding towards me. Being partly hidden behind the pulpit, I pulled myself quietly down behind the choir stalls just in time.

Two men began to discuss something.

"Do you have it?", said the first.

"Yes, here," replied the second.

I could see through a hole in the choir stall that they were knights and under their weather worn cloaks was armour bearing a red cross on a white background.

"We must hide it before we take it to the safety of the Abbot's keeping in Glastonbury. We cannot travel with it today, as I fear that they'll find us and take it."

"Yes," was the simple reply.

I heard them moving something that sounded heavy, made of stone, but I couldn't see what it was. Then they moved it again, and made their way out of the Chapel.

I waited what seemed like an age before I felt I could escape, and left as quickly as I could. I knew someone could be watching and I might be in grave danger, but I made my way out of the Chapel and into the trees behind it. No one came after me.

Respect for Veterans

The village of Temple in Midlothian is where the Knights Templar held their primary and principal Preceptory in Scotland. There are some trees that might follow along lines of previous structures. There is a patch of rough ground that may one day be archaeologically be further investigated generating more detail about this site. For now there is a ruined kirk managed by TEMPLE OLD KIRK FRIENDS, please see the link below. The kirk is well worth a view, but it is not old enough to be a Templar building, there could be a reuse of stone still holding information held right now within the present structure. The stone archway pictured here is quickly photographed as I chatted of knights, of bold deeds, of traditions of yore and of the way forward we can create to reach out and to become legendary for peace making and social caring as we all make one world a safer, better and happier a place to be.

The pictures start with the arch that stands even though it is heavily worn by time. We progress away from the archway and look briefly at the significant trees standing with the stones over centuries. There are pictures that show a tree that is slowly breaking back down into the ground. There are pictures of the nearby old school that stands close to the arch. Any structure close by might have opened up and then sealed in some historic evidence. The evidence focussed upon today can be microscopic soil structure and also hue. The ground holds secrets here and one day further archaeological excavation might open up new details. Til then we have the archway behind the old school and our imagination.

From this spot you can look out to the ports of Edinburgh, to the Firth of Forth and across to Fife. This place stands secure once within it’s own sovereignty. The inspirational stories of old seem to have a fine place here to reside.

After the fall of Eathyross, the Templars were almost wiped out. They have slowly rebuilding their forces. Day 3989 Y11D336

Rosslyn Chapel, formerly known as the Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew, is a 15th-century chapel located in the village of Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland.

Rosslyn Chapel was founded on a small hill above Roslin Glen as a Catholic collegiate church (with between four and six ordained canons and two boy choristers) in the mid-15th century. The chapel was founded by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness of the Scoto-Norman Sinclair family. Rosslyn Chapel is the third Sinclair place of worship at Roslin, the first being in Roslin Castle and the second (whose crumbling buttresses can still be seen today) in what is now Roslin Cemetery.

Sinclair founded the college to celebrate the Divine Office throughout the day and night, and also to celebrate Masses for all the faithful departed, including the deceased members of the Sinclair family. During this period, the rich heritage of plainsong (a single melodic line) or polyphony (vocal harmony) were used to enrich the singing of the liturgy. Sinclair provided an endowment to pay for the support of the priests and choristers in perpetuity. The priests also had parochial responsibilities.

After the Scottish Reformation (1560), Catholic worship in the chapel was brought to an end. The Sinclair family continued to be Catholics until the early 18th century. From that time, the chapel was closed to public worship until 1861. It was reopened as a place of worship according to the rites of the Scottish Episcopal Church, a member church of the Anglican Communion.

The chapel was the target of a terrorist bombing in 1914, when a suffragette bomb exploded inside the building during the suffragette bombing and arson campaign.

Since the late 1980s, the chapel has been the subject of speculative theories concerning a connection with the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail, and Freemasonry. It was prominently featured in this role in Dan Brown's bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code (2003) and its 2006 film adaptation. Medieval historians say these accounts have no basis in fact.

Rosslyn Chapel remains privately owned. The current owner is Peter St Clair-Erskine, 7th Earl of Rosslyn.
