I think the reason the motor didn't work is dirty contacts. I filed and then polished the contacts with 600 grit emery paper.
This tall table lamp was fabricated from a cast-iron baluster left at our local swap shop, a bronze maritime lighting fixture, a custom-cut granite base and a clear piece of acrylic to tie everything together. The lamp is an led bulb.
CN 8904 and GTW 4622 pulling and pushing a long train of mostly boxcars during a switching job, putting together Train L562, the Brookhaven-Jackson Local on CN's Central Subdivision (Ferguson side) before heading back up north in Brookhaven, Mississippi on a comfortable Wednesday, the 12th of November, 2025 at 14:17 CST (20:17 UTC).
GTW 4622 had definitely caught my attention as it looked quite a bit different than the usual GTW EMD GP38-2 so I ran up the street from my house to take a few snapshots of the locomotive. Sure enough, it was different as it's an EMD GP9R which we don't get to see many of those down here. Most of the switchers and locally running locomotives around here are generally EMD GP38-2s. This was definitely a nice little catch for me.

Gravel Switch, KY
Sunday afternoon, July 22, 2007, was one of those gorgeous blue-sky Kentucky summer days. It begged to be appreciated with a Sunday afternoon drive in the country. With the wind blowing in my open window, I headed down scenic Kentucky Highway 68--past the historic Shaker Village and Harrodsburg. I finally turned onto an even less traveled road, Highway 243, to find Penn's Store.
Penn's Store, located in the tiny community of Gravel Switch, Kentucky, holds the distinction of being the oldest country store in America that has been run continuously by the same family since 1850.
I thought I might experience a bit of one of their Sunday afternoon "Pickin' and Singin' Jams," but I didn't heed the advice on their website to call ahead. I learned when I arrived that some of the musicians weren't able to make it that afternoon, and they had been so swamped with visitors that day, the owners hadn't had a chance to go home and get ready for their typical music fest.
Cats line the porch of Penn's Store. There they've found an adopted home after being abandoned or lost.
There's nothing modern about Penn's Store. It remains authentically the way it has been for years. A single electric light bulb illuminates the counter where visitors can order bologna or ham sandwiches with a moon pie for dessert. I was disappointed that they didn't have Coke in the glass bottles, but their soft drink chest has definitely been around a while.
Beside the store the owners have planted a flower and herb garden. In 1992, through donations, for the first time in its history, Penn's Store acquired its own outhouse. Made of poplar wood with a tin roof, the outhouse door is carved with the traditional crescent moon opening. The addition of the outhouse was cause for celebration and resulted in what has become their annual "Great Outhouse Blowout." Every September, outhouse racers come from near and far to compete (I'm not making this up!) and enjoy a day of music and nostalgia.
Penn's Store is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

An afternoon of tinkering with the Alfa. An upgrade of sorts, adding a hazard warning light switch and associated wiring. A worthwhile modernisation, especially given the increase in smart motorways, with no hard shoulder. Luckily, I could mount the switch in a spare hole in the dashboard, previously blanked off with a rubber bung.
The other switch is a dimmer for the instrument panel, which takes it from dim to even dimmer.
Labour's Switch Together literally puts the power back in the hands of the people. Collective bargaining to reduce energy cost for all. switchtogether.org.uk
