Title: Swinging out Florence

  

This is an original commission painting by fine artist Christopher Clark. My good friend and fellow Italy traveler Aimee commissioned me to do this painting, wanting a swing dancing couple doing a swingout with the city of Florence in the background. I worked with her to establish the details about the pose, the clothes the dancers were wearing, and the view they would be dancing in front of. We were able to fit all the desired landmarks into the painting, including the Arno river and the Duomo. Aimee was thrilled with the finished product as Lindy Hop and fine art once again meet on the dance floor.

Swingout Sister

Just a quick teaser from this weekend's progress. The swing-out is about a third of the way finished and able to carry a spare tire now. Nudging the tire mount left and down a tad keeps good visibility even when carrying a 33-inch tire.

Hydraulic water pressure crane

Already for ages long cranes for loading and unloading ships were put into use, powered by hands, men or horses treadmills. The hydraulic water pressure crane was developed by W.G. Armstrong at New Castle upon Tune (England). The first 'water crane' was plaxced there in 1847. Short after, in 1851, the first steam powered crane was put into use in England.

 

The advance of water cranes was that a series of cranes could be powered through a water pipe by one steam engine, whereas each steam crane had to rely on its 'own steam'. When in 1872 the 'Nieuwe Waterweg' (note: widened part of the river Meuse ending in the North sea) was finished and Rotterdam went through a period of a turbulent expansion, the harbour area Feijenoord (...) was developed by Pincoffs and the Rotterdamse Handels Vereniging NV (Rotterdam Trade Association plc). The Poortgebouw (Gate Building) en the Entepotgebouw (Entrepot building) recalls to it.

 

In 1879 the RHV placed the, in those days ultramodern water crane, together with a high pression water pipe which was kept under pressure of 55 atmosphere by a steamengine and a accumulator.

The water cranes of Rotterdam were of the same type as the here shown cranes of Antwerp, though without portal. They were build here by Figee in Harlem, under licence of Armstrong.

At the same time hydraulic coal dischargers were build, which could tumble coal waggons above the ship.

In 1882 hundreds of water cranes were placed in Antwerp. The RHV, in which entire Rotterdam had invested, became bankrupt in 1879, was taken over by the Gemeentelijke Handelsinrichtingen (Local authority Trade Institution), the now a days Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf (Port of Rotterdam Authority).

It was an enormous scandal and Pincoffs escaped with his family to AAmerica.

 

In the very severe winter of 1890 all water cranes become frozen over so that the whole harbour in Antwerp were out of order. For the Rotterdam city council this the reason to decide to build the first electrical power station and then the harbour switched to electical cranes.

the Rotterdam water cranes were dismantled about 1935, in Antwerp the last crane stopped in 1975.
