Swifts and people to live under same roof
Swifts are declining nationally and Camden Council has installed nest boxes high up on various housing blocks to help to address the decline.
One of the reasons for the decline is modern construction practices which render once-accessible nesting sites under roof eaves inaccessible.
The installation of swift nesting boxes in high-rise buildings is seen as one way to counter-act this problem, providing suitable nesting sites for this fascinating bird.
Amazingly swifts spend most of their time in the air even sleeping and mating in mid-air! Swifts arrive from Africa in and regularly use buildings in the UK to breed. They nest in high man-made structures under tiles, in the eaves and in lofts.
The housing sustainability and nature conservation teams worked in partnership to install swift boxes on non-residential walls. Swift bricks were cemented into the wall to provide long-lasting nest sites. If successful - the nest boxes will only be used for a few months (May to August) to raise broods of chicks. As the chicks do make a slight chirping noise, the stairwell walls were used to eliminate any chirping disturbance that could occur on dwelling walls.
There will be no cost to residents for this installation and the boxes do not require regular cleaning as the adults also eat most of the droppings their chicks produce!
These nest boxes contribute towards targets in Camden’s latest Biodiversity Action Plan to provide a variety of nesting habitat throughout the borough.

Built at the Swift factory in Cheylesmore, the Swift Tourer was the 'Deluxe' car to trundle the countryside in, powered by the spectacular engine output of 7hp from a single-cylinder engine.
This shows the swifts at Chapman Elementary School, Portland, Oregon, starting to gather at dusk above the school chimney. Later, as it begins to get more dark outside, the birds form into a swirling cyclone [not in this video] and enter the chimney for the night.

About 18 miles of excellent dirt road west of Dupuyer at 4,884 feet elevation. The dam holds back Birch Creek to create Swift Reservoir. This dam, which I imagine is a concrete gravity-arch, is a 1967 replacement for the original dam which was destroyed by floods in 1964.
• Dam Height: 205 feet
• Dam Length: 573 feet
• Main Purpose: Flood control on Birch Creek

Heath and safety wouldn't allow these nowadays, it's a shame nowadays we personalise with furry dice, (not me).
