Knott End, Lancashire, UK. Fylde record and 2nd for Lancashire,
I just happened to look out of the window at Pilling Lane and saw a swift! Then spent an hour chasing it up and down the coast trying to get photos in the rain and failing light. Couldn't ID it in the field and identity only sorted out after the pictures were processed and shared. Thanks to Chris Batty and Hans Larsson for the identification.
Another photo of one of the small Swift Foxes at the Calgary Zoo, taken mid-September.
"Captive breeding of swift foxes began in 1973 through a privately run program. In 1978,
the species was officially designated as "extirpated" in Canada by COSEWIC, and a
national recovery plan was approved in 1995 to reintroduce swift foxes and create a
self-sustaining Canadian population. The species is now (August 20th, 2003) listed as "endangered" by COSEWIC. Swift foxes were first officially released in Alberta in 1983. By 1996, 540 foxes had been released in the Alberta-Saskatchewan border and the Milk River Ridge areas, parts of the species' native range. Most animals released were bred in captivity; the remainder were wild-born animals imported from the United States. At present (August 20th 2003), it is estimated that there are approximately 96 swift foxes in Alberta, most of them the offspring of released foxes. The population is stable or increasing slightly, but the species remains extremely vulnerable because of its small numbers and limited distribution." The latest in my efforts to get a picture of the swifts which fly round and round the block of gardens behind our house during the summer (in the winter they go to South Africa). They're so small and so fast and agile it's nearly impossible to keep them in the viewfinder and in focus - and of course they do their best flying at dusk...
Another beautiful Australian native parrot.
Swift Parrot, Lathamus discolor
The swift parrot is a threatened species, largely due to the loss of its habitat.
The swift parrot occurs in south-eastern Australia. It is a migratory bird which only breeds in Tasmania and over winters on mainland Australia. The breeding range is largely restricted to the east of Tasmania within the range of the blue gum Eucalyptus globulus.
Swift parrots are commonly observed in the Hobart area feeding on flowers of introduced eucalypts, particularly pink flowering gum.The swift parrot is 23-25 cm long, bigger than a budgie but smaller than a rosella. Streamlined, for rapid flight, it is green with red on the throat, chin and forehead. It also has red patches on its shoulders and under the wings. It has a blue crown and cheeks, blue on its wings and a long pointed tail. It can be readily identified in flight by its bright red underwing patches.
Its call is a 'kik-kik-kik'.
The swift parrot usually arrives in Tasmania in August. Nest sites in eastern Tasmania are usually located near the coast in dry forests on upper slopes and ridge tops. They make their nests inside a hollow tree branch or trunk in very old or dead trees, which can take hundreds of years to form.
It is not unusual to find more than one pair nesting close to each other. Nest sites may be re-used but not necessarily in successive years. The use of a particular nest site depends on the availability of food in that area.
After the breeding season, in February and March, the entire population flies north, dispersing throughout Victoria and NSW.
The Swift Parrot migrates to the mainland every autumn to winter mostly in the nectar-rich box-ironbark forests and woodlands of Victoria and New South Wales.Like other migratory species, swift parrots form into flocks prior to migrating. Some of these can be quite large consisting of up to 500 birds. It appears they break up into small flocks of 10-20 birds to cross Bass Strait during the day.
Because of clearing of more than 85% of these preferred wintering habitats, and continuing clearing of 500-1000 ha of its breeding habitat for commercial woodchipping every year, the breeding population of the Swift Parrot has declined markedly in the last decade.
It now consists of fewer than 1300 breeding pairs and is thought to be decreasing by more than 1% every year.

If I could afford a second airplane, one for travelling distance with economy and style, this would be it... if I were to dare parking it outside. This particular one, of course, must be kept indoors when not flying.

Binomial name
Apus apus
Irish Name:
Gabhlán gaoithe
Status
Widespread though declining summer visitor throughout Ireland from May to early September.
Identification
About the same size as a Swallow, but all dark. Spends virtually all of its life airborne and never seen resting on wires, as Swallows and Martins frequently do. The weak and small feet of a Swift only allow it to cling to vertical surfaces or shuffle akwardly on the ground (at the nest). In flight, has a distinctive shape with scythe shaped wings held straight out from the body. One of the fastest flying birds in Ireland.
Voice
Most frequently heard is a high-pitched scream "srrrriii". Often given by pairs in high speed chases.
Diet
Feeds exclusively on various invertebrates (midges, flies, spiders) caught in flight
Breeding
Breeds throughout Ireland, usually in small recesses in buildings, both occupied and derelict. Less frequently in holes in trees or caves in uplands or coastal areas.
Wintering
Winters in tropical Africa. Migrants arrive from the end of April onwards and most will have departed by mid-August. A few individuals can usually be seen up until the start of September.
