Police, Fire, Mountain Rescue and Helicopter Combine to rescue man from swift water.

North West Air Ambulance teamed up with the police, fire, ambulance service colleagues and the Patterdale Mountain Rescue team on Wednesday (11:00 4 November) to airlift a 79-year old man who had become trapped in swift running water in Aira Force near Ullswater.

A man had fallen and become trapped in swift running water and remained in the freezing water for two hours before being released. He was hypothermic but in good spirits and was carried by the North West Air Ambulance to hospital in Carlisle. The journey by helicopter took just seven minutes with the equivalent land journey estimated to be 45 minutes.

The rescue was difficult due to the man being immediately above the 120ft drop of the main waterfall and having to ensure the safety of the mountain rescue team.

The air ambulance and the mountain rescue team are both charities relying on public generosity and volunteer support.

Lynda Brislin, Chief Executive said: “It costs almost £3.9m a year to keep the lifesaving helicopters flying ‐ the charity receives no government nor NHS funding.”

The two air ambulances, which are based at Blackpool and City of Manchester Airports, have a maximum flying time of 10 minutes to the nearest appropriate hospital anywhere in the North West.

In the event of incidents like this fall, it is this speed with which medical care is delivered that is crucial.

Lynda added: ”By receiving treatment at the scene and being lifted by the air ambulance to the hospital quickly a patient’s speed of recovery is dramatically improved.

You can support the air ambulance at www.nwaa.net or call 0800 587 4570 or the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team www.mountainrescue.org.uk/

I pass by this river on my commute to and from work. I had been noticing some fog on this thing in the mornings and finally decided to get some photos of it.

This river comes right from the reservoir that provides Boston with it's drinking water. It's very clean water. This part of the river allows -only- fly fishing, and there is parking off the main road for people to do this. There is always some people there either in the morning or evening when I pass this place gearing up or putting gear in their cars.

This morning I met a fisherman who showed me some of his morning photos (with a waterproof Olympus camera. Very jealous now).

Airborne forces show Swift Response

British airborne forces are training alongside NATO counterparts to develop their ability to work together to deliver a Swift Response to international crises.

16 Air Assault Brigade is on Exercise Swift Response, which brings together more than 5,000 personnel from 10 nations and takes place in Poland and Germany between May 27-June 26, 2016.

Under the command of Headquarters 16 Air Assault Brigade some 2,000 troops are taking part, the largest British contingent to deploy on a NATO exercise in 2016. The joint force includes 3 PARA Battlegroup, including engineer, artillery, logistics, signals, medical, provost and ISTAR support; Apache attack helicopters from 4 Regiment Army Air Corps; and RAF Chinook and Puma support helicopters and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

The training involves mass parachute jumps and air assault operations as part of a simulated mission to restore stability to a troubled region. It is key to developing interoperability with 82nd Airborne Division and 11e Brigade Parachutiste, the Brigade’s key partners in the US and French armies respectively, as well as wider allies.
