Swallow - Cleethorpes.

A large group of Tree Swallows were obviously feeding on bugs by the way they were swooping around, although the bugs were too tiny for my eyes to see. I spent a few minutes trying to get some images and in retrospect wish I would have spent my entire morning there, as I found little else on my wandering. Tree Swallows are pretty little speedsters. My bird book states that they arrive in Florida in August and linger through May. (Tachycineta bicolor) (Sony a1ii, 200-600 lens @600mm, 1/3200, f/6.3, ISO 1600)

Swallows have come back to the I-5 Freeway Overpass on the sheltered side of the bridge overlooking the San Dieguito River and Valley Walk. About 48 nests were constructed in the past week. Each dab on the nest was the little bird's mouthful of clay, built by pairs for their nest and eggs.

Birds take off in a large groups to feed on insects in the morning or at dusk, or to rebuild and strengthen their handiwork.

The swallows nested in my yard in 2022 and for several years before that. Many swallows died last year when we had a cold spell that killed all the insects. Hopefully they will return to nest this year. Taken in my back yard in Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Out on a hike photographing wildflowers with my macro lens and this happened overhead...I took the shot with the 100mm macro so it's cropped in a lot!

[Ecuador 2021] A dimorphic tanager that feeds on insect mist much like a swallow. The male (shown) is stunning in turquoise with a black face and white belly. Tandayapa.

There were about five Swallow-Tailed Kites perched in an Austrialian Pinetree in South Miami. They were getting ready to fly south to Brazil for migration.

A very common but beautiful bird.

Not sure how I feel about not having the ability to crop as much with the A9. Actually the Barn Swallow wasn't cropped all that much - he really let me get that close!

Genovesa Island, its sandy coral beach with a great viewpoint of the bay, is one of the Galapagos’ jewels. It is also known as the “Bird Island“ offering the opportunity to enjoy the most representative birds of Galapagos as: Puffball–chicks, white both yellow–crowned and lava herons, Red footed boobies contrasting with the Nazca booby and also the Swallow–tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls in the world that will be nesting at the cliff’s edge.

Swallow-tailed Kite - These are one of my favorite birds of prey. They visit Florida for a few months in spring and summer and live the rest of the year in South America. This one was flying over the parking lot at Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park.

The Swallows were in much smaller numbers at Minsmere RSPB when I visited a couple of weeks ago, I could only find this one at the sluice which normally would have quite good numbers :-(

The Swallow-tailed Hummingbird is a large, spectacular denizen of open savanna-like vegetation in the southern and northeastern tropics of South America. It is easily recognizable as a large violet and green hummingbird with an impressive long, deeply forked tail. It is readily seen in defense of dense nectar resources such as those found on flowering trees, but it will also feed on insects in the air. It is divided into five subspecies, four of which occur in the southern disjunct portion of the specie’s range and often intergrade.

The Pacific swallow (Hirundo tahitica) is a small passerine bird in the swallow family. It breeds in tropical southern Asia and the islands of the south Pacific. It is resident apart from some local seasonal movements.

This bird is associated with coasts, but is increasingly spreading to forested uplands.[2] The hill swallow and the welcome swallow were formerly considered conspecific.

No cliff? Build under a bridge. No bridge? A picnic shelter will do in a pinch. This Cliff Swallow has decided this is the spot where it will build its nest and is guarding the spot, even chasing off other swallows. The mud on the ceiling and wall is probably remnants of nests (Cliff or Barn) from previous years. The park department removes the old nests every fall.

The swallows are a species-rich family of the order of passerine birds, suborder songbirds. Swallows feed on flying insects, in Central Europe they are migratory birds. The typically forked swallowtail gave its name to other objects, as did its characteristic nest-building. Swifts and terns do not belong to this family.

A swallow the breeds in the western portions of Canada and the U.S. south to central Mexico. They winter in Mexico south to Central America. They are closely related to the Tree Swallow which are widely distributed throughout North America.
