St Michael, Sutton, Norfolk
Sutton is a pleasant if fairly ordinary village off the road between Stalham and Potter Heigham, but the church is away from it along narrow lanes that will eventually take you all the way to Ingham. I suppose that in the great scheme of things it is, like its village, a relatively insignificant church, very restored and without anything particularly exciting inside. But I remembered how much I had liked it when I'd passed this way fifteen years previously, and I had been looking forward to going back.
You approach from the east, the narrow chancel folding back the south aisle like a wing behind it, the bulky south porch failing to follow and standing proud. It rises rather surreally high above the south aisle, and was built right on the very eve of the Reformation as the typically 16th Century entrance suggests. But despite this and Herbert Green's familiarly dull restoration of the 1890s, much of the construction here is of the early 14th century, before the Black Death put a crimp in so many Norfolk church buildings and our hearts were still full of joy and light.
The font is contemporary with this building phase, and sits in an interior which is thoroughly clean and well-cared for. As I had remembered, it was a pleasure to sit here for a few moments. So many of the churches around here are full of wonders, all bells and whistles, but here is a simple village church, with details surviving from every century, every generation, doing what it does best - just being there.

The eastern part of the 12c nave remains from the original church . In early 13c a chancel was added to the east which was extended late 13c. Above the chancel arch are primitive carved heads of BVM and the child Jesus www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/45JCj7
The tower was built against the south wall of the nave in 14c with entrance porch below where hangs the ropes to ring the 5 bells all cast in 1701 by William and Robert Cor, bellfounders. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/tF68e8
In 15c the nave was extended westwards and heightened with clerestory windows.
In 1879 there was a thorough restoration during which the interior walls were stripped and pointed, the west wall of the nave was rebuilt, and most of the furnishings and fittings replaced.
During recent years extensive repairs have been carried out to the roof and floor of the church, and in 1983 the bells were restored and rehung at a cost of £8000. In 1987 the building was rewired and new light fittings provided. There was major tower restoration in 2000.
According to the guide, the hamlet of Sutton with about 80 inhabitants is justly proud of the care it gives to its parish church.

Sutton House is a Grade II listed Tudor manor house in Homerton High Street, Hackney, London. It is owned by the National Trust.
Sutton Court Road, London Borough of Sutton. Constructed 1964, 18 floors, 72,000sq.ft. Mies-like simplicity of form reflecting setting sun. There are plans for this to be joined by two more towers of 14 and 15 floors for residential and retail use, but unfortunately it looks like this tower will be reclad. [2009XI20A]
