Sutton Scarsdale Hall was built in the Baroque style on the site of an existing house between 1724 and 1729 for the 4th Earl of Scarsdale. The architect for the new hall was Francis Smith of Warwick, who skillfully incorporated the earlier building of about 1469 within his design.

Notable craftsmen were employed here. Edward Poynton of Nottingham carved the exterior stonework and the Italian master craftsmen Arturi and Vasalli carried out the fine stucco (plasterwork) detailing in the principal rooms, remnants of which can still be seen.

Grinling Gibbons is believed to have contributed some of the interior wood carvings. The cost of this splendid building left the Scarsdale heirs with depleted funds and they were eventually forced to sell the hall in the 19th century.

John Arkwright, a descendant of the industrialist Richard Arkwright, bought the hall, but in 1919 the family sold it to a company of asset strippers.

Many of its finely decorated rooms were sold off as architectural salvage and the house was reduced to a shell. Some rooms still exist: three interiors are displayed at the Museum of Art in Philadelphia.

A pine-panelled room is at the Huntington Library, California. It was offered to the Huntington by a Hollywood film producer who had used it as a set for a film, Kitty, in 1934. He had bought it from William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate and well-known collector.

The ruins of the hall were saved from demolition by the writer Sir Osbert Sitwell, who bought it in 1946 after he had heard of the impending sale to dismantle the stonework. In 1970 descendants of the Sitwells persuaded the Department of the Environment to take the building into guardianship and preserve it for the nation.

A recent programme of works has been undertaken by English Heritage to preserve and protect the fragments of the original stucco interior.

The ruins of Sutton Scarsdale Hall, with tantalising remnants of a once majestic interior, offer the visitor an opportunity to view the ‘skeleton’ of the building – impossible in more complete country houses. The approach to the hall today is along a narrow driveway. Its spectacular location on a hillside is immediately apparent.

The roofless hall is built of mellow sandstone and stands to its original parapet height. Some areas of stonework have been lost at this level, giving an almost castellated appearance from a distance.

The hall was built with two impressive façades. The eastern front is the grandest, with exuberant Baroque detail typified by attached giant Corinthian columns topped with a central pediment. The central bays housed the formal drawing room. Elements of the 15th century structure such as blocked window openings in earlier brickwork can be seen in this room and in the one behind it.

The slightly plainer north elevation housed the entrance hall, which contains remnants of stucco work. The remains of the paired Ionic pilasters with wreathed swags are clearly visible, as are the remains of the chimney pieces incorporating carved figures.

Cheam Road, Sutton, on 4 January 1991. I took this picture because of the position of the Cannon cinema, sandwiched between the Trinity Church (of 1906/7) and the little row of shops, probably also Edwardian. How on earth did it get planning consent?!

Twenty years on, Basil Menswear has been replaced by an estate agent's office, but Warrender, the Jewellers, survives. The Cannon has gone, but the nightclub that has appeared in it's place is possibly even uglier.

It was taken over by Empire Cinemas in 2006 and closed in 2017 for a massive overhaul to the design of UNICK Architects, splitting four of the original screens into 2 and adding a further two screens in an adjacent area - giving a total of 12 screens when it reopened in February 2018. It has two Impact Screens and the auditoria range in size from Screen 12 with just 14 luxury reclining seats to Screen 3 (Impact Blue) with room for 160 cinema-goers. Church of St Thomas A Beckett, Sutton Under Brailes Warwickshire consists of a nave , chancel & south tower / porch.

The eastern pahttps://www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/we33K7rt of the 12c nave remains from the original church . In early 13c a chancel was added to the east which was extended late 13c. Above the chancel arch are primitive carved heads of BVM and the child Jesus www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/45JCj7

The tower was built against the south wall of the nave in 14c with entrance porch below where hangs the ropes to ring the 5 bells all cast in 1701 by William and Robert Cor, bellfounders. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/tF68e8

In 15c the nave was extended westwards and heightened with clerestory windows.

The 1086 Domesday Survey recorded that Sutton was a 5-hide berewick of the manor of Deerhurst in Gloucestershire which had been given to Westminster Abbey at its foundation by Edward the Confessor. It had therefore once belonged to the Saxon Priory of Deerhurst whose possessions were shared between Westminster and the Abbey of S. Denis near Paris. It remained in the hands of the monks of Westminster, who in 1291 had 1 carucate of land in Sutton worth 20s., rents to the amount of 30s., and farm-stock worth 20s. The manor is said to have been held of the honour of Gloucester as 1/5 knight's fee in 1386 and by 1535 the abbey's estate was yielding rather over £22 yearly. After the Dissolution the manor, with a water-mill, a tenement called Smith's Place, and a rabbit warren, was granted in 1545 to Sir William Petre, flic.kr/p/b4Nb6F Secretary to Henry Vlll to whom it was confirmed quit of the rents

In 1879 there was a thorough restoration during which the interior walls were stripped and pointed, the west wall of the nave was rebuilt, and most of the furnishings and fittings replaced.

During recent years extensive repairs have been carried out to the roof and floor of the church, and in 1983 the bells were restored and rehung at a cost of £8000. In 1987 the building was rewired and new light fittings provided. There was major tower restoration in 2000.

According to the guide, the hamlet of Sutton with about 80 inhabitants is justly proud of the care it gives to its parish church.

A dull, dismal and drizzly day, today, so time to re-visit some very old files! This is the National Trust's Sutton Scarsdale Hall which overlooks the M1 just North of Junction 29. This is a hand-held HDR triplet, taken with my old Eos 5D, back in May, 2008.

A visit to the shell of Sutton Scarsdale Hall, the remains of a mansion built in 1724-29 for the fourth Earl Of Scarsdale which his heirs had to sell off to pay his debts. Its interiors were sold off, mainly to American buyers. It is now in the hands of English Heritage and has recently undergone a major renovation program.
