Experimental submarine "flight" using wings to descend instead of ballast

Went for a test drive in the prototype build... It starts indoors…

With no emissions and only the sound of a fan, the car can sneak up behind you. So I had to pitch the idea of downloadable “engine ring tones” coupled to the drive electronics and stereo. Their ice driving test video sounds like skiing…

(and, no, that is not a long extension cord running to the car ;-)

Earth Hour is a joint initiative between the World Wildlife Fund Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald to raise awareness of the means to reduce global warming emissions by encouraging Sydney residents and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour on March 31st 2007.

This shot was taken halfway through Earth Hour. As you can tell from this photo, the organisers were only partially successful in gaining widespread support for Earth Hour.

Jan 6, 2007 Taiwan

To see is to believe, if it is hard to imagine.

I have lived here [a small town in the middle part of Taiwan] for thirty something years and it is still one of the most familar places to me. The ginger-based peanut to-fu soup [0.8USD] here is one of the things that makes me nostalgic all the time.

And you don't need to wait until Sunday to go shopping at local Farmer's Markets because they are always there.

Life is different out there as you can see and feel from this portrait.

"The concept of culture I espouse, and whose utility the essays below attempt to demonstrate, is essentially a semiotic one. Believing, with Max Weber, that man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself spun, I take culture to be those webs, and the analysis of it to be therefore not an experimental science in search of law but an interpretive one in search of meaning. It is explication I am after, construing social expression on their surface enigmatical. But this pronouncement, a doctrine in a clause demands itself some explication"

A map of ocean temperature variation and some of the Sorcerer II sample sites.

This just in, from Technology Review: The ocean hosts a stunningly--and surprisingly--diverse menagerie of microorganisms, according to a massive genetic study published today.

Craig Venter set sail around the world to shotgun sequence the millions of viruses and bacteria in every spoonful of sea water. From the first five ocean samples, this team grew the number of known genes on the planet by 10x and the number of genes involved in solar energy conversion by 100x. The ocean microorganisms have evolved over a longer period of time and have pathways that are more efficient than photosynthesis.

Another discovery: every 200 miles across the open ocean, the microbial genes are up to 85% different. The oceans are not homogenous masses. They consist of myriad uncharted regions of ecological diversity.

Those insights came from the first five samples. On March 13, a second set of data was released. More tidbits from Tech Review:

"We have not understood much about our own planet and our own environment," Venter told Technology Review from his boat, the Sorcerer II, currently in the Sea of Cortez, in Mexico. "We've been missing as much as 99 percent of the life forms and biology out there."

The first set of results, published this week in three papers in the journal PLoS Biology, revealed six million new proteins, doubling the number of known protein sequences. "Everywhere we sampled, we found new proteins," says Venter.

In fact, every environment sampled showed high genetic diversity, both within and between samples. The findings are challenging the notion of species in microorganisms. "When you look at microbes, they don't appear to be individual species"

"Microbial communities are almost like a superorganism, where each microbe is contributing to community as a whole," says Weinstock. "We really need to characterize the metagenome and analyze the genes and protein products as an aggregate."

Venter and others eventually hope to find proteins that can be co-opted to create novel bacterial machines--proteins involved in hydrogen production or carbon fixation, for example, that could one day be engineered to boost the carbon-fixing capacity of the ocean or to create fuel-producing bacteria. "Genes are the design component of the future," says Venter.

For the curious, PLoS has a special collection of open-access articles, including an interactive graphic display of the data and a slide-show video by Venter out in the Sea of Cortez.

Work-life and obligatory family responsibilities call for the mind, body, and spirit to recharge as often as possible to offset daily burdens. Therefore, the relaxing resorts, cultured experiences, plant-based eateries, and the mid-century modern architecture of Palm Springs were perfect for my journey. But what’s even more interesting is that the profusion of electric vehicles (EVs) on the market has led us to consciously rethink our lifestyles in order to reduce carbon footprints from what we eat and drink to how we drive and live. Humans overconsume in every category, so mindfulness, minimalist, and reductive habits are vital pillars to saving this planet from self-destruction. As a vegan myself, I know it's an anomalous approach from the norm; however, it is necessary for every facet of living.

The 10th of December is the third White Band Day to make the Global Call to Action against Poverty.

Stand up, all you Flickrites, to end poverty now!

This is BP's Helios House. It's an eco-friendly gas station that still sells petro, but educates the public on environmental issues.

Water: Helios House exceeds current environmental standards for on-site collection, filtration and distribution of water; canopy collects rainwater for irrigation; rain and site water are filtered to prevent hydrocarbons from polluting groundwater.

Heat: Helios House is designed to minimize the “heat island” effect. The green roof is landscaped with drought tolerant plants, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems, minimizing rainwater runoff, and re-oxygenating the air through CO2 absorption (carbon sink).

Light: 90 solar panels produce enough energy to power two to three homes which is equivalent to just over 5,000 lbs/year of CO2 generation reduction. Energy-efficient lighting in the canopy area uses 16 percent less electricity than traditional stations.

Materials: The site utilizes farmed wood from renewable sources; bathroom tiles utilize 100 percent recycled glass; signage is made from stainless steel scraps from the project; all stainless steel used on site is recyclable.

Switch off the mind and let the heart decide

who you were meant to be

Flick to remote and let the body glide

There is no enemy

Shatter the lens and grind it into sand

One measured exposure

Scatter the seed and furrow in our land

The future is roses. Roses.

Loom displayed and demonstrated during a display of traditional country crafts at Culzean Castle.

The flywheel and pump parallel linkage in the Claymills sewage pumping station at Stretton near Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, UK

Two mirrored-pairs ( i.e. four engines ) were installed by Gimsons of Leicester in 1885 for the purpose of pumping sewage in the Burton treatment works where special arrangements were needed to deal with the effluent of the local major brewing industry.

The engines were always worked in balanced pairs, with the other pair on standby.

They are Wolff double-compound jet-condensing Watt-type beam engines. Each unit has a 24-inch bore 6-foot stroke high-pressure cylinder exhausting to a 38-inch 8-foot low-pressure cylinder. The valve apparatus is of the Cornish pattern.

Each unit rocks a wrought-iron beam that powers a 24-foot diameter 24-ton flywheel via a Watt parallel linkage.

The sewage is moved by the illustrated reciprocating ram mechanism that has a 21-inch bore pump cylinder of 6-foot stroke that thus draws 0.4087 metric tonnes of wastewater per stroke. Accordingly each balanced pair shifts about three-quarters of a long ton per stroke.
