Supermacro of the pistil and six stamen of my red Hippeastrum, photographed at few hours from its blooming when the stamen have not yet released their protective external sheath casing. In few hours the sheath of each stamen will dry out and fall, revealing the yellow pollinated stamen. The pistil, from straight, will open up its apex in three tiny umbrella- or hand-shaped lobes. (As a reference see this macro of my orange Hippeastrum flic.kr/p/2pvZbfo)
When a flower has both pistil and stamens, botanically it calls "Perfetto".
My Album 'Callas and Amaryllis studies' carries on with a steady research to find the best framings, compositions and perspectives.

I've said before that nature is my place of worship. I found a filter called Mr. Contrast that can have the outcome of creating a stained glass effect.
This flower is about a half inch in diameter.
Something different, I know, but I am in an experimental mood.

I used the SuperMacro setting on the S5 to shoot this male dasher - to use SM you have to be able to put the lens right in the subject's face. This was a very friendly dasher perched just at the right height on one of my sticks at the back gate. The background is filtered light through our wooded backyard. His stigmas are different colors - not sure I've noticed that before.

Mid-90's heat continues here with high humidity. Have a good weekend!
The pollen pistil of this flower is less than 1mm in real life size , actually arround 0.5mm. Enlargements with this lens is pretty impressive as I don't need additional equipment, pure light if sunny day, or sometimes a tiny flash that came packed with camera :).
A test with my new camera that has potent Fujinon lenses for supermacros. Still exercizing and this is the only acceptable shot I could so far obtain of callas with my new Fuji X-S1.
Shot outdoor in natural daylight. Very interesting how my new lenses emphasizes the texture and veining of the petal, notwithstanding its optical white tone.

We've been on the hunt for Stylurus (Laura's & Russet-tipped clubtails) since late July - and the first one appeared yesterday. But only after prayer (!) ... I headed just a little farther and suddenly we spooked a river cruiser from its perch and it zipped by us. Then as we were turning around to leave the area this Russet-tipped flew by - I turned and watched it land a few feet from my husband - a bit overhead in these tree leaves. The rusty tip was obvious even from several feet away. She perched where light met shadow so lighting was difficult - but she made up for it by being so friendly that she let me pull down the leaves to get her right up to me so I could shoot in SuperMacro. I'll post a close-up of those apple-green eyes this week.
We also saw 2 or 3 old Bar-winged skimmers - exciting to see still on the wing in August!
