On 22 January 2014, German singer and actor Fred Bertelmann (1925-2014) died. His biggest hit was the song Der lachende Vagabund (1957), which he also sang in the Schlager film of the same name.
Fred Bertelmann was born in Duisburg, Germany in 1925. Aged 9 he became a chorister and later also studied cello, trumpet, guitar and singing. In World War II, he fought in the Wehrmacht but then became a prisoner of war and was sent to Alabama, where he first heard of swing music. After his return to Germany he founded his own band and often performed in American GI clubs in Germany. In 1950 he toured Sweden with Arne Hülphers and Zarah Leander. He also worked as a solo singer of Schlager songs. His most popular song was the 1957 published Der lachende Vagabund, a cover version of Jim Lowes song Gambler’s Guitar. Other hits include Wenn es Nacht wird in Montana, In Hamburg sind die Nächte lang, Zwei Gitarren am Meer, Ein kleines Lied auf allen Wegen, and Arrivederci Roma. Twice, in 1958 and 1964, he sang at the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Fred Bertelmann performed one of his songs in the romantic comedy Pulverschnee nach Übersee/Powder Snow to Übersee (Hermann Leitner, 1956) with Adrian Hoven and Marianne Hold. This lead to several more film parts. He played the lead in Der lachende Vagabund/The Laughing Rover (Thomas Engel, 1958) opposite Susanne Cramer, a tie-in on his superhit of a year earlier. In total he appeared in 18 Schlager films, but he also starred in stage musicals as Kiss me Kate. Since 1966 he was married to television presenter and actress Ruth Kappelsberger. He was honoured with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In late 2013 he suffered from severe pneumonia. Fred Bertelmann died on 22 January 2014 in Berg, Upper Bavaria. He was 88.

Zarin is India's first Indo Persian restaurant, located in the beautifully picturesque Fairmont Hotel, Jaipur. The restaurant itself is spread over a huge space, with amazing views. The private dining room, where we ended up dining, is also quite opulent and special.
Our meal began with Mahi Zameen doz and Tabriz koftey. The mahi doz was sublime. It was a great piece of fish, marinated in amazing spices and then wrapped in a leaf and baked to perfection. It was like having a great European baked fish, elevated by subtle spicing.
Next came tabriz koftey, which were chicken dumplings with typical Persian nuts in a light onion broth. This again was a marvellous dish with spices making their presence felt without overpowering the taste.
There were a number of interesting accompaniments - chutneys, salads that made the food taste even better.
The chef was kind enough to get us the superhit of the day, the grilled lamb chops. The quality of the lamb, New Zealand was special along with the amazing marinade. Imprtantly, they were quite juicy inside with a perfect char on the top.
The best veg dish of the day was kasare pukhtan, which was a paneer dumpling in a sweet pumpkin gravy. I would have liked a little more spice to balance the sweetness of the dish but it was still quite palatable.
Another unmissable dish here was the atta raan, which was a whole leg of lamb sealed and cooked in a dough covering to keep it wonderfully moist inside. I've had many raan(s) in Delhi but this was raan - fine dining, delectable indeed.
I ended my meal with a plate of fresh fruits and some Iranian desserts along with a traditional Persian chai, that was really milky and a little heavy to end your meal with.
Indo - Persian is a fantastic concept that needs to be explored by everyone more often so that one can appreciate the subtlety and flavours here. Zarin is a stunning place to begin that journey. Not only is the setting opulent and beautiful but the food itself can make you wanting to come back for more every time.

Salman Khan and Deepika Padukone are two extremely good looking stars. The duo together would make an awesome jodi and their collective star power would benefit any filmmaker’s movie. Now we all know that Deepika has been openly admitting that it’s her dream to romance Salman on screen and the Sultan hero too is keen on his fresh pairing with this leggy lassie. However, seems like there’s some kind of a fault in their stars. We bet that sounded like a very superstitious statement, but hey we wouldn’t dare make such a statement without having proof and here we have instances that prove that indeed there’s something going on in the Salman-Deepika onscreen pairing.
Remember Deepika had revealed that it was not Shah Rukh Khan but Salman who offered her the first movie. The heroine felt that she wasn’t Bollywood ready and hence ditched Salman at that time. Of course sometime later Deepika debuted with SRK in Om Shanti Om and it went on to be a superhit, the babe also went on feature with Shah Rukh in many films thereafter which became commercial successes. As for Salman after her debut offer there were at least three other instances where she missed her big chance to share screen space with him.
Deepika was apparently the first choice for Sonam Kapoor – Salman starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Well, she was definitely in the running, but seem like her arch rival and fashionista Sonam bagged the project. That’s not all, if buzz is to be believed Deepika’s busy work schedule even cost her Yash Raj Film’s much awaited Salman flick – Sultan. Deepika lost this role to her beau Ranveer Singh’s ex Anushka Sharma. The actress this year did not sign any Bollywood film and we hear the reason was not just her big Hollywood debut opposite Vin Diesel. Buzz was that the actress had kept her dates free in a bid to bag Salman’s next film with Kabir Khan. BollywoodLife sources revealed that Deepika had even given her nod on a condition that she get a meaty role, however we now hear that the actress is out of this movie too. Since it is an Indo-China film, Salman is keen on roping in a fresh Chinese actress.
We’re sure fans of the two stars must be disappointed just like us. But that brings us to the point, is the Salman - Deepika jodi jinxed?

Rehana took the cine-world by storm, when she first appeared on the silver screen way back in the mid-40s. After doing some unmemorable supporting roles, Rehana made her debut as a leading lady in Hum Ek Hain (1946) – a movie about national unity. Incidentally, Hum Ek Hain also marked Dev Anand’s debut.
The success of two Filmistan’s films Shehnai and Sajan (1947), made Rehana an overnight star. In Shehnai, she was paired with Dilip Kumar’s younger brother Nasir Khan and the success of the film can be attributed to its superhit musical score by C. Ramchandra including such hits as Maar katari mar jana (sung by Amirbai Karnataki) and Aana meri jaan meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday (sung by C. Ramchandra Shamshad Begum and Meena Kapoor). Late 40s and early 50s was the best phase of her career and with the exception of Dilip Kumar, Rehana was paired with almost all top Indian heroes of her era including Dev Anand (Dilruba), Raj Kapoor (Sunhere Din, Sargam), Kishore Kumar (Cham Chhama Chham), Prem Nath (Sagai) and Prem Adeeb (Actress).
Throughout her career, Rehana remained an undistinguished actress with theatrical acting style and artificial performances. However, it was her seductive dances and her knack for landing into controversies that kept her in limelight throughout the late 40s and early 50s. Whether it was her infamous “lesbian act” with Nigar Sultana in Sunehre Din (1949), or the famous bath scene in Dilruba (1950), Rehana stayed in the news. Shin Sinaki Boobla Boo (1952) became the first film to be banned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting because of its low moral tone, and because it ‘throws the glamour of romance and heroism over criminal characters,treats sacred objects irreverently and is, in consequence, opposed to the interests of public decency and morality’.
After 1952, Rehana’s career sharply went on the decline as films like Rangeeli (1952), Chham Chhama Chham (1952), Hazar Raatein (1953), Samrat (1954) and Delhi Durbar (1956) all sank at the box-office. Frustrated by her predicament, she decided to migrate to Pakistan. Her first film in Pakistan was Shalimar (1956), where she co-starred with Sudhir. The film flopped terribly at box-office. She worked in a few more films but failed to impress Pakistani audience. Perhaps, during the making of Raat Ke Rahi (1960), she married its producer Iqbal Shehzad and gradually moved away from films as she became more engrossed on the home front. Later they got separated, and Rehana married a businessman, Sabir Ahmed. Her last appearances were in cameo forgettable roles including Zeba-Kamal starrer Dil ne Tujhe Maan Liya and Nayyar Sultana-Darpan starrer Dulhan, both released in 1963.
She was last seen as one of the panel of judges for `The Nigar Film Awards’ in 1995.

Vakeel Saab teaser on Pawan Kalyan birthday: Power star Pawan Kalyan is making his comeback in acting field with a courtroom drama Vakeel Saab, which is one of the much hyped movies of Telugu film Industry. The movie Vakeel Saab is remake of Hindi Superhit movie Pink and the remake is being helmed by Venu Sriram. In this film, Jana Sena Chief is playing the role of a lawyer and reprising the role of Amitabh Bachcan from the original.
The major part of the shoot has been wrapped up and only 20 days shoot is in balance to be shot. Now according to the latest update, the makers have decided to unveil the teaser of Vakeel Saab on the occasion of Pawan Kalyan’ birthday that falls on 2nd September. An official announcement is expected to come out regarding the release date of Vakeel Saab teaser.
Versatile actor Prakash Raj will be seen in a negative role in Vakeel Saab, which is being bankrolled by Dil Raju and Boney Kapoor jointly whereas it has the music by S Thaman.
