A beautiful young Burmese refugee with Thanaka paint on her face - a cream/sunblock seen on faces throughout Burma and Northern Thailand.

-----

A simple thought.

I'm not sure what to make of these places because I simply don't know enough about them.

On one hand, these artificial encampments provide much-needed work and shelter for refugees from Yunnan, Laos and Burma. On the other, I simply can't get over feeling like I am walking through some grim petting zoo when visiting this sort of place. I wish I could write more eloquently on this subject in general and on this place in particular, but I haven't yet done enough research. I'll work on this one.

I went on a bit of a tirade about respect in my most recent blog post. I think what I wrote applies in large part to encounters and exchanges like these. Read it at www.flashparker.com - I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Just tanning. In hindsight, always carry sunblock around when living in a country that is sunny most of the year.

Neutrogena Sunblock, 2015, by Mike Mozart of TheToyChannel and JeepersMedia on YouTube

Luckily I did liberally apply and reapply sunblock to the little man's back, arms and legs...so his only sunburned areas wound up being his cute little cheeks (on his face).

I really want the shipping boxes! A few of them. And the frozen moments is pretty cool this series. However at this point I’m o ER a few repeated items! Like how many sunblock is needed! Bazooka gum! Pringles!!

You knew it would happen. I used SPF 70 sunblock.

A sombrero: the world's finest sunblock.

At Point Lookout State Park

Liam and Camper played in the mud yesterday. Liam told me that the mud "is better than sunblock."

He is right. If you happen to be caught out in the sun and don't have sunblock, mud will do the trick quite well - and it's probably better for your skin!

Notes to self :

- have destination pre-loaded in iPhone, BEFORE leaving driveway

- test MJ tribute cds in car player, well BEFORE leaving driveway

- slathering on waterproof sunblock is more effective than spraying on waterproof sunblock. and must be done before car trip, before water entry and during any breaks. we have sunburned backs and shoulders to prove it.

- swimming during the strongest sun is a good heat avoidance strategy (in theory) but the damage to our skin is unavoidable. so early morning or late afternoon it will be, going forward.

- past the one hour mark you really do need some easy to digest fuel, regardless of effort expended. nothing fancy, but something healthy-ish that can be tucked into a bathing suit.

- people bbq near beaches and the smell is awfully overpowering, especially post-swim. can you say cravings ?

- bring a handful of almonds and a piece of fruit or a chocolate milk for immediatedly afterwards. consider googling local, indie burger or fast food joints prior to, for the drive home.

- cold or iced water. lots of it for pre and post swim, d'oh!

- an extra pair of flip-flops and spare hat, always room in the car for these!

- some beaches charge a swimming or park access fee, per person.

Amusingly, the sales guy gave me a bottle of official BMW sunblock with my new car.

It's really only for with convertibles if you read it, but I expect they had a box to get rid of.

Here's everything you need to be happy on the JMT. Starting at the top row, and going left to right, and top to bottom:

1. 1/8" CCF pad with bivy rolled up in it and Wild Ideas Expedition bear can with ~14,000 calories and toiletries (sunblock, toothbrush and hand sanitizer) inside

2. Hexamid tarp (with guylines and stakes in stuff sack), EE 30 degree quilt, Neoair short sleeping pad, homemade Reflectix cozy (for rehydrating food in ziplocs in)

3. Jetboil Ti (with 4 oz fuel canister inside), battery "brick", rain jacket and down jacket, fleece hat, fleece balaclava and fleece gloves

4. 2 ea. 32 oz Gatorade bottles and 1 ea. 20 oz Gatorade bottle, camera tripod, TP, Icebreaker merino wool shirt

5. First aid kit (with MANY odds and ends--headlamps, aqua mira drops, repair kit, etc), SPOT, cell phone, and trowel, JMT trail atlas, long underwear bottoms, clothing stuff sack

6. MLD Exodus pack, possum down sleep socks, and one spare pair of 1/4 height running socks (what I hike in)

I did a pretty good job of bringing what I needed, and leaving what I didn't. I think I could've left a bit out of the first aid kit, but that's about it, without doing something drastic. Ultimately, starting pack weight (including bear can, first four days of food, and full fuel canister) was about 21.5 lbs. Weight of gear alone (no food or fuel) was around 12.5 lbs, and without the bear can, around 10.3 lbs. Later in the trip, I also carried the Steripen and camera, which started in my dad's pack. Dad's weight was slightly less than mine.

I spy sunshine and 60 degree temps in the weekend forecast. Don't forget the sunblock

(Be careful with the sun!)

Yeah guys! The summer sun is fu** up!

Look at those balloons, they didn't wear sunblock and now the sun's gonna catch them!

Luckily Kimmi, the sky blue one, is a bit dumbsç, so he probably won't realize of its death... Let's pray for an unpainful death, or at least a fast one...

The one who's suffering's Boogahh, the yellow one. Just before exploding he saw his destiny, and then his whole life in a second....

All his memories, the time he got stucked among a tree's branches and was saved by a boy named Leonard... His ganny Marghe's milk cofee...

So I aware you, use sunblock so this won't happen to you!

It is very very important so that you don't get red and sunburned complaining all the time, you'll refuse every invitation to hang out and if your couple touches your shoulders, you could scream so hard that you could have very serious arguments...

So... Be careful!

A beautiful, remote and culturally rich country infamous for its military regime, Myanmar (Burma) has in recent years been making small steps towards democracy, with the first democratically elected government in 2015, after more than half a century.

Modern conveniences, such as mobile-phone coverage and internet access, are now common, however for all the recent changes, Myanmar remains at heart a rural nation of traditional values - though one may have hard time to find someone among the younger generation without a smartphone or Facebook profile.

One will still encounter men wearing the sarong-like longyi and chewing betel nut, spitting the blood-red juice onto the ground, women with faces smothered in thanakha (a natural sunblock), and cheroot-smoking grannies. Trishaws still ply city streets, while the horse or bullock and cart is common rural transport.

We carefully planned our 3-weeks long Burmese adventure around 6-days long hiking trip in the remote Chin state, where we commenced our journey in the hilltop settlement of Mindat, and subsequently hiked for four days across ethnic minority villages using old footpaths and mule trails.

Besides that, Bagan was the obvious spot to spend a few days exploring its temples, and we also spent a few days more in the south around Hpa-An. Then, finally, Ngapali was the ultimate destination for our beach leisure time.

Using a bikini clad model on Bondi Beach to sell sunblock is so 1980s. Retro!

Radical dude!! We had a chance to learn skimboarding with the help of our Beach Hut Sunblock. Lent us free board and rashguard. It was cool but at the same time very scary!

I guess I have lots more photos to post and news to tell about this.

Thanks, Amanda, for posting us in the blog. But no thanks to posting me without a rashguard! I am not that proud of my bulging stomach.

After an unfortunate 2+ hour Kayak outing where I forgot to put sunblock on my legs, my Gustins became my Kayaking pants for the next few days.

Beautiful young woman is posing at the camera with suncream on her face over the sea background.

Our son and daughter-in-law chose this location for this year’s spring trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, putting us right on the ocean front beach. It was a great location right beside Jeanette’s Pier, and the weather was so sunny. There were some windy days that made the waves all that much better. Besides our family from Ohio, we had friends visiting from several Congregations neighboring ours, plus a family that drove from mid-Texas and another from Indiana. As usual, we took turns making meals and it was a great experience with everyone fellowshipping and working together peacefully. Yes, I had one conference call with World Headquarters I did not want to miss, but it was still total relaxation. I tried to go a whole day without touching a camera, but then I got the shakes, and I just had to grab a camera and start snapping again; when you are hooked, you are hooked. sunblock is absolute necessity here, this is 30 SPF for face :)
