I may not love summer, but I love how summery this outfit is! Blue and white always call to mind blue skies, white clouds, blue seas, and white sand. And neon simply screams, “SUMMER!”

This is an acrylic on board painting I found in an antique mall. The artist, Tom Miller, was a prominent commercial artist who specialized in book cover art in the 1960's through 1980's. He did many romantic novel covers while under contract with CBS Fawcett Books in NYC, for stories by writers which included Taylor Caldwell, Diane DuPont, Mitchell Caine, Pamela Hill, and Raymond Giles. Miller died a few years ago, and his paintings which he had kept were sold at auction.
I initially bought the painting as a joke. It seemed to sum up the entire historical romance novel genre with its images of the brooding sea captain, the sadistic slave overseer, the tall dark hero with the swooning blonde, the pensively waiting raven haired beauty, and the older couple at the spanish mission. I thought I'd have a party, and invite my friends to each write a single page synopsis of a story to accompany the painting, with the writer of the best story to win the painting. But then I began a quest to find the actual book. It's impossible to search for a book online when you don't know either the author or title, so I began browsing used paperback book stores. I resigned myself to searching through a section of the stores where I felt rather embarassed to be seen, but I found a surprising number of Miller's covers. Never this one, however. So now I'm trying a longshot by posting it on Flickr - a proverbial "Hail Mary Pass".
