Martyr’s day observed in Zebar.

Zebar school aims to imbibe values in our students so that they become responsible citizens of the country. With the same objective, Martyr’s day was held in Zebar on 30th January, 2020 to pay homage to the victims who fought for the freedom, welfare and progress of our country. In India, this day is celebrated every year on 30th January and on 23rd March. On 30th January,1948, the father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated during the evening prayers. 23rd March is also celebrated as Martyr’s day as on this day three well-known heroes Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar of our country were hanged to death by the British. The day was observed in Zebar by following a two-minute silence in all classes of the school. May the sacrifices of Martyr’s be remembered always.

Protest Against George Bush's Visit to India: The visit of George Bush to nur country ic; one of the moc;t shameful instances of subservience to imperialist interests exhibited by the UPA Government. The JNUSU maintaining its rich legacy of anti-imperialist struggles organized a large number of programmes in campus to mobilize the students. The } JNU students came out on the streets of Delhi in massive numbers to protest against the visit of the mass murderer. ~ .

Protest Against privatization of Airports: The JNUSU mobilized students in large number against the privatization of airports and demanded that the Airport Authority of India should be allowed to undertake modernization of airports instead of foreign nnd private bidders. .

27% OBC Reservation and 54o/o Scat Increase: The JNUSU welcomed the proposal for 27% OBC reservation and 54% increase in seats. We believe that this decision of the government is a significant step in the direction of providing education to all sections of the society. The JNUSU mobilized the students in favour of this proposal and organized the biggest pro-reservation demonstration in Delhi on June 3n1 ]twas because of the pressure of the JN USU that the Administration had to publicize its proposals for the 54% scat increase. According to these proposals the University has demanded Rs 306 crores for implementing the 54% scat increase. .

communal goons in our campus in front of Lohit and Chandrabhaga Hostel. The Admmistration and the police refused to register the case as one of caste abuse and violence. The JNUSU met the Home Minister and the IIRD minister in this regard demanding strict acuon against the guilty. The Administration as a result of the pressure of JNUSU constituted a three member enquiry committee to look into the case. The report of the enquiry committee is still av. aiteci .

5. .

Remembering Bhagat Singh's 75'11 Martyrdom Day: The JNUSU remembered the heroic sacrifices of Rajguru, Sukhdev and Bhagat Singh on their 75ih Martrydom day by forming a human chain in defence of the ideals of these great martyrs. Jn this programme a large number of students participated. .

.

6. .

Against Domestic Violence and Dowry: The JNUSU remembered the death anniversary of the pioneer of women's movement in India, Savitribai Phule, by organizing an Oath Taking Ceremony against dowry and domestic violence Several JNU teachers along with the VC participated in the programme and encouraged the students to take the oath. A large number ofstudents took oath reaffirming their commitment for a gender just society. .

Hunger Strike in Solidarity with NBA: The JNUSU expressed full solidarity with the Nannada Bachao Andolan and sat on a hunger strike demanding stopping ofconstruction of the dam. .

.

.

While the JNU students' movement under the leadership of the JNUSU achieved significant gains o¥er the last year, the role of the JNUSU President has been unsatisfactory. Instead of providing leadership to the student movement m campus, the JNUSU President for most of her tenure has been inactive and was absent from campus during crucial phases. The JNUSU President chose not to communicate to the students about the PM's visit to our campus despite being a part of the committee which decided on the PM's visit to our campus. The JNUSU decided to protest against the anti-people policies pursued by the UPA during PM's visit and mobilized students for public meetings and protest marches. The JNUSU submitted a memorundum to the PM and the HRD Miruster enumerating our opposition to their policies. \Vhile the JNUSU Council decided not to disrupt the Public meeting certain elements disrupted the PM's speech and the right wing engaged in large-scale violence against them. The JNUSU President was completely absent during this time. The JNUSU Council however felt that the role of the JNUSU President was highly irresponsible and therefore she should be publici} censured and not impeached as demanded by a requisition of the students. The E-UGBM endorsed the position of JNUSU Council and the JNUSU President was censured. The E-UGBM also condemned the incident of violence and demanded action against those guilty of it. The JNUSU President in a most undemocratic manner denied accepting the mandate of UGBM. The Council therefore decided not to cooperate with the JNUSU President. ln a similar fashjon the J~USU President was completely absent from campus when the campus was debating on the issue of OBC reservation in .

institutions of rugher education and students under JNUSU's leadership were building a movement against the casteist campaign of Youth for Equality. The JNUS U President took no initiative when student union v. as carrying out a survc) and mobilizing students for financial assistance last semester. .

In the coming year, the JNUSU needs to build up a strong movement to ensure that the admmistration reverses its decision of amending rules and procedures of GSCASH, prcssurise the administration to notify the election of students to ~ Board of studies and AC, and prevent any move to privatisation of JNU academic and student life. We would li~e to ~ appeal to you to extend your full support in order to carry forward these struggles in the ~-.

them. The sleeping lion once awakened from its slumber shall become irresistible even after the achievement of what our leaders aim at. After his first experience with the Ahmedabad labourers in 1920 Mahatma Gandhi declared: "we must not tamper with the labourers. It is dangerous to make political use of the factory proletariat." (The Times, May 1921). Since then, they never dared to approach them. There remains the peasantry. The Bardoli resolution of 1922 clearly depicts the horror the leaders felt when they saw the gigantic peasant class rising to shake off not only the domination of an alien nation but also the yoke of the landlords. .

It is clear that our leaders prefer a surrender to the British than to the peasantry.... " .

The War that exists at the heart of our 'democracy' .

In Bhagat Singh initial writings, there is an inclination towards anarchism and revolutionary terrorism, but he was quick to recognize and grasp the superior revolutionary essence of Marxism. He spoke of the indispensable need for an organized communist party and the centrality of a communist politics for independence and socialism. He emphasized the proper combination of all forms of struggle and prepared a draft revolutionary programme that was marked by a consistent and .

comprehensive revolutionary approach. .

The India of Bhagat Singh's dreams was no ram rajya, nor an idealized world of milk and honey. He warned against the .

terrifying dangers of communal politics and spoke in no uncertain terms against the brutal realities of caste oppression. .

The India that we live in today is no longer a British colony and the sun has long set on the British Empire. It is, however, the land ofthe brown sahibs that Bhagat Singh warned against. When we observed "Republic" Day this year, a police officer under whose custody Soni Sori was tortured and abused sexually was awarded a 'gallantry' award! To raise one's voice against state repression, against corporate land grab, against displacement is now termed by the powers-that-be as "sedition". Corporate honchos who loot our resources and politicians who rewrite laws to protect a regime a corporate profiteering roam free, while people's doctor Binayak Sen is jailed for years together for talking of systemic state-sponsored malnutrition and poverty. .

70% of our people live on less than 20 rupees a day, but our rulers are far too busy attending banquets organized by the US President, leader of the biggest imperialist power in the world. Our sovereignty has been mortgaged to foreign interests. Love for the country has been redefined as I love for the corporates'. Vast enclaves of land are being given over as tax-free havens of corporate loot and plunder. When people suffer, the state turns a bfind eye; when they protest, it turns a deaf ear. Astate of war has been declared: it goes by the name of ~operation Green Hunt' whose targets are the poorest people: the dalits and the adivasis of our land. The Indian state today is as unafraid as its coloniaJ predecessor to shoot down people when they raise the flag of protest. .

From Bhagat Singh's last "Petition to the Punjab governor": .

uLet us declare that the state ofwar does exist and shall exist so long as the Indian toiling masses and the natural resources are being exploited by a handful ofparasites. They may be purely British Capitalist or mixed British and Indian or even purely Indian. ... All these things make no difference. ... The war shall continue. .

It may assume different shapes at different times. It may become now open, now hidden, now purely agitational, now fierce life and death struggle. It shall be wagedever with new vigour, greater audacity and unflinchingdetermination till the Socialist Republic is established and ... every sort ofexploitation is put an end to and the humanity is ushered .

into the era ofgenuine andpermanent peace.,, .

.

The face of freedom .

Yet Bhagat Singh lives on in the struggles of our times and the cry of "lnquilab Zindabad" still resounds. Beyond the films, .

beyond the statues in parliament, beyond the attempts of India's ruling class to subvert Bhagat Singh's revolutionary legacy, his memory endures. It has lived on in Kayyur and Punnapra-Vayalar, in Tebhaga and Telengana, in Naxalbari, Srikakulam, Bhojpur and Nandigram. .

Bhagat Singh's nationalism began with the students and the youth. He urged that they should go deep among the masses, to the colonies of workers and hamlets of the rural poor. For all those of us who wish to fight for an Anti-imperialist and pro-people patriotism, Bhagat Singh is the face of that freedom. For those of us who wlsh to raise the voice of protest against imperialist agendas, against corporate loot, against draconian la'NS, against caste violence, religious fundamentalism and patriarchy, Bhagat Singh provides us energy and inspiration. .

We remember also the words of Com. Chandrashekhar, who responded to a question asked to him during the JNUSU .

Presidential debate with the fearless reply: 'Yes, I have ambitions. My ambitions are to live like Bhagat Singh and .

die like Che Guevaral' .

.

To speak ofBhagat Singh-Sukhdev-Rajguru, to speak of revolutionary poet Avtar Singh Paash, to speak of .

Chandrasekharis to reclaim ourhistory, to make it ourown, to declare this countryis ours; it does notbelong to imperialistcapitalorits indigenous agents. Itis to declare thatwhile we are witness to the suffering ofourstruggling people, we shall also bearwitness to theirliberation/ .

aisa Shiv Sena Goons Waste No Time in Re-enacting Thackeray's Legacy: 20.11.12.

.

2 Young Girls Arrested for Facebook Comments.....

Relative's Clinic Vandalised by the Shiv Sena......

Violence, Hooliganism, and Outright War on Democracy in.

Mumbai Following Balasaheb Thackeray's Death........

.

Immediately after Bal Thackeray's death in Mumbai following a long illness, Shiv Sena indulged in orchestrated violence.

and hooliganism after a young Muslim girl in Mumbai made a simple comment on how public life in Mumbai was paralysed.

during his funeral..

.

Following Thackeray's death and his funeral conducted with full state honours by the state government, the whole of.

Mumbai came to a standstill, with several shops shutting down and public transport being severely affected. After this, a.

21-year old woman living in Mumbai, Shaheen Dhada, commented through a Facebook post, saying that a bandh on the.

occasion Thackeray's funeral was not necessary - "we should remember Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev", she added. One of.

her friends "liked" the comment. What followed was absurd - and highlighted just how weak our democracy is, and how.

vulnerable to muscle-flexing by the right-wing..

.

Shiv Sena has said Thackeray has "left a huge legacy" - and soon after has been showing us what exactly this "legacy".

is all about:.

.

21-year old Shaheen and her friend Renu were arrested by the Mumbai police (based on a complaint by.

the Shiv Sena) under 505 (2) for making statements "creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill will". They.

were remanded to 14-day judicial custody and finally released from custody only after they paid bail..

.

Shaheen's uncle, Dr. Abdul Yusuf Dhada, runs a clinic in Palaghar, Mumbai and today Shiv Sena goons.

ransacked the clinic, broke furniture and other infrastructure in the clinic and forced all the patients to.

move out. Even though complaints have been filed with the Mumbai Police, no action has been taken on the 40.

Shiv Sena goons who orchestrated this violence in full public view..

.

The attacks by the Shiv Sena, are, of course, in the good old Shiv Sena tradition of intimidation and violence. But these.

are compounded by the attitude of the Mumbai police - which has obediently carried out the Shiv Sena's diktats and.

arrested two young women for expressing an opinion on a social networking site!.

.

What is equally shameful is the attitude of the Maharashtra government. Balasaheb Thackeray, who was once.

disenfranchised by the Election Commission for six years for making communally provocative speeches, who presided.

over hate- and violence-filled campaigns against poor labourers and workers in Mumbai, was accorded full state honours.

in his funeral. Even various leaders of the so-called "secular" Congress - including the Prime Minister of the country - have.

been busy trying to sanitise the actions of Thackeray and the mayhem he wrought over several decades. During the last.

phase of Thackeray's illness, Digvijaya Singh, propagandist for Congress' `secularism,' on Friday said Thackeray was a.

"fighter" all his life and will also "fight" his illness. Of course Digvijaya Singh never mentioned what exactly Thackeray.
