I wore this button out tonight and a guy at the table next to me, as he was leaving, asked me if it meant "no men." I said yes and he said, "too bad, I would have been hitting on you all night."

MDC SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL MEETING A RESOUNDING SUCCESS!!
by Reuben Gift Waretsa
The MDC Southwest District held its first Council meeting for 2019 on 9 February, 2019 from 1200hours to 1600hrs at the Pakstan Centre, London Road in Reading, Berkshire.
Mr Model Pamire chaired the meeting in the absence of the District chairman, Mr Edgar Makuni who was unable to attend due to other committments. District executives in attendabce included Mrs B Madzingira-District secretary, Mr Chris Nyamukuvhengu-District Tresurer and Mr Reuben Waretsa -District deputy organising secretary.
Delegates attended from all the Southwest District branches and the following branch chairpersons led their delegations :- Mr Piyo Choga -Portsmouth, Bornwell Madzingira - Southhhampton, Mr Mararirakuenda-Reading, Spiwe Dube -Hywickham and Slough.
Delegates were previledged to have the company of Mr Owen Muganda who is the long serving Secretary for the recently dissolved MDC UK and Ireland Provincial executive. Delegates had a brief experience to tap into Mr Muganda's political knowledge through a question and answer session which touched on a variety of relevant party topics.Mr Muganda is originally from Reading and coming to this occassion was like coming Home
Top on the agenda was the appointment of a caretaker chairperson to be in charge of running the District affairs during the interim period leading to the national congress.
All members from branches to the district were urged to pay up their 2019 subscriptions. Subscription payments were considred critical as they impacted on members' rights to vote during the forthcoming congressional elections.
A very important development which was indeed revolutionary and proactive was the appointment of a welfare committee tasked to look into the welfare and social needs of the District membership.
Members were treated to some tasty Zimbabwean cuisine courtesy of the Reading branch fund raising committee.

Kinda mundane, but it's nice to know that I can make a good mat without a mat cutter. Luckily, I had some extra to practice on, and a quick google search gave me some idea of the basics; for instance, I was going to cut from the front of the mat to reduce tear-out. Turns out that with a good sharp blade, you can cut from the back without leaving a ragged edge. The real trick is maintaining a 45 deg. angle. As long as you don't change your hand position during a cut, it works out just fine.
All I used was:
1. An Olfa knife
2. A cutting pad
3. Metal straightedge
4. A wee bit of tape to keep the photos in place once matted
5. A pencil to lay out on the back of the mat
6. The internet, to find some ideas, which I found here
7. Some frames from the dollar store
8. Mats from the craft store
I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, and I'm gonna hafta start framing more prints.
Maybe I'll even buy a real mat cutter someday.

With a great deal of success from last season, Team Loctite, under the direction of team owner Trevor Powell, this year chose to run 3 cars, instead of the one car last season, driven by Oliver Turvey.
Two of this season’s drivers are very much new comers.
Rupert Svendsen-Cook and Jordan Williams. Both rookies for the FBMW season.
Team Loctite’s third driver is no stranger to the car, but will not be looking forward to the English Weather and bumpy tracks.
Sam Abay had been driving in the Asian FBMW, before moving to England to drive for Team Loctite for this forth coming season
Sam knows the cars but in very different conditions.

Final exhibition and design presentation of student projects for Recipe for Success Foundation's Hope Farms.
On seven acres in Houston, Hope Farms grows healthy produce in the midst of one of the city’s largest food deserts and trains U.S. Military Veterans to become urban agripreneurs. The project is a critical part of Recipe for Success Foundation’s work to combat childhood obesity by changing the way children understand, appreciate and eat their food and mobilizing the community to provide healthier diets for children. www.recipe4success.org
Facts and Figures on Lowland NERICA
The NERICA varieties were the first wide-scale success of crossing of the two cultivated species (Oryza sativa and O. glaberrima). The upland NERICA varieties are derived from O. sativa subsp. japonica (known in Africa as ‘upland rice’) and the lowland varieties from subsp. indica (‘lowland rice’).
The development of lowland NERICA (NERICA-L), adapted to both rain-fed and irrigated ecologies, was led by AfricaRice Scientist Dr Moussa Sié and national (NARS) partners. It earned Dr Sié the Fukui International Koshihikari Rice Prize from Japan in 2006.
Sixty NERICA-L varieties, selected by farmers in several African countries through the Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS) process, have been named and characterized. The Lowland NERICAs have yield potential of 6-7 tons per ha and good resistance to major lowland stresses.
