I love the creative spontaneity of working with models in outdoor settings. I used to adopt a much more structured approach to these sessions. That's great insofar as I had a good concept. But more often than not I could not fully realize the look I had preconceived and my takeaway was some level of disappointment. I've gone more free-style lately. Things feel much more natural and less forced. I'm much more focused on including the model in the creative process rather than regarding her as simply a subject. The synergy of two minds leads to results simply not attainable by mine alone.
Late in a session with Carol near a drab soybean field, I happened to notice the field was suddenly aglow in the long rays of the autumn sun. The completely parched and featureless soy plants that had greeted our arrival here were now alive with warmth and brimming with light and shadow. I had Carol enter the frame, standing between me and the sun like a human eclipse. Instantly her physical form morphed into her shadow. The effect was an eerie silhouette cutout. I shared my review screen with her so she could understand my excitement over this eerie vision. She moved back into position and twirled about gracefully. The shutter clicked and this image was born.

'A' is for Amber
This is one of three pieces of amber linked together to hang on a flat silver choker. Its a lovely piece to jewellery to wear as it doesn’t have much weight but sits perfectly.
Amber is a gem, but not a gemstone – it is not a mineral but the hardened resin of certain trees fossilized over long periods of time. Because it forms a translucent orange-yellow substance that glows when polished and held up to light, it has long been used in jewellery and other decorations.
When a tree is punctured or scratched, the tree releases a sticky substance called resin to seal the wounded area. Over time, chemically stable kinds of resin will harden and form the pretty, translucent version of amber that you see today.
Amber which was polished and carved to make jewellery or decorations dates back to 11,000 BCE. It has been found at archeological sites in England. It was also used to make varnish as long ago as 250 BCE and powdered amber was used in incense.
Last night's sunset evolved over about an hour - from my previous image of silky sandy coloured twisted clouds, to this epic sky supernova of red, orange grey and blue.

Was not sure how the sunset would turn out, because the clouds were very thick last night, but I figured I would give it a shot. Everything was gray, and I was kind of wandering around just taking random pictures when suddenly I looked up and the sky was erupting with color over the ocean. It was also sort of misty and foggy, so there was a very awesome hazy effect down at the end of the tracks.
A pair of freight engines on a Norfolk Southern OCS was a routine thing 15 years ago. Back in a time before NS had purchased a quadruplet of F-units specifically for the purpose under Wick Moorman's leadership.
On this particular OCS (Office Car Special) the Southern "heritage unit" and another freight locomotive were given a spa day and tapped for the job.
