Wells Fargo Building ~ Tallest in the City

In 1928, a year after the Bridge of Lions was first opened, the building was constructed to house the First National Bank and the offices of Mayor Herbert E. Wolfe. A stunning ocean view from their offices.
First National Bank was succeeded by Exchange Bank of St. Augustine, then purchased by Jacksonville-based Atlantic National Bank of Florida in 1987, purchased again in 1998 by First Union National Bank of Charlotte, North Carolina, then in 2001, First Union announced it would merge with Winston-Salem based Wachovia Corporation, and most recently sold to Wells Fargo and Company in a deal that was completed on December 31, 2008. All of the Wachovia locations changed signs two and a half years after the Wells Fargo merger was negotiated. Sign ordinances within downtown St. Augustine being what they are, the blazing red and bright gold Wells Fargo logo was restricted to a small plaque at the front door — the larger sign on the west side of the main entrance facing the Cathedral being made using more subdued brown and brass colors. It is a truly gorgeous building with its unique red cap. A focal point in the city.
The last year the building was actually owned by a bank was 1992; when it was owned by FNB Properties Inc – a subsidiary of First Union National Bank. Many owners...same beautifully detailed building.

When I was in Denmark a week ago, I visited the Arken art gallery in a small suburb of Copenhagen called Ishøj. Ishøj was clearly in need of a revamp, and with such stunning ocean views and flat expanses of land, when I came home I was inspired to build a house for Ishøj.
I thought the best way of showing the entire building would be a schematic. It didn't come out all that well, but for the sheer man-hours of Photoshop I put into this I think it deserves place on my Flickr photostream.

The Sutro Baths, located near San Francisco’s Lands End, are the hauntingly beautiful remnants of what was once the world’s largest indoor swimming pool complex. Opened in 1896 by wealthy entrepreneur Adolph Sutro, the Baths were an engineering marvel, featuring seven saltwater pools, slides, trapezes, and springboards. The pools were fed by the Pacific Ocean and could accommodate up to 10,000 visitors at once. Architecturally, the Baths were a spectacle with iron beams supporting a massive glass enclosure, allowing natural light to flood the interior.
The site also included a museum, filled with Sutro’s collection of artifacts, and a concert hall that could hold thousands of people. Unfortunately, the popularity of the Sutro Baths waned during the Great Depression, and after a series of ownership changes, the site was destroyed by fire in 1966 as it was being converted into a housing development.
Today, the ruins of the Sutro Baths are a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a glimpse into San Francisco’s past. The site is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with well-maintained trails leading to stunning ocean views and the historic Cliff House. Visitors can explore the foundations of the pools, the tunnel that once connected the Baths to the ocean, and the surrounding cliffs. The Sutro Baths remain a testament to San Francisco’s rich history and are a must-visit for anyone interested in the city’s architectural and cultural legacy.

Had a marvelous time in California last week. There were so many photos to choose for my picture of the week that I literally didn't know where to begin or how to decide. Finally, I settled on this surfing shot because who knows when I will see the ocean again. Also, this particular shot made the cut because the surfer ended up suspended in the air for three frames. And if I recall correctly straightened up and rode the wave out vertically. Quite a feat. Some of these guys were fascinating to watch.
I have SO MANY more photos to share. I saw several varieties of hummingbirds and other kinds of birds, flowers, butterflies, and stunning ocean views. I can see why Cali is such a popular destination. Looking forward seeing what everyone has been up to!

Looking back on some photos from Land's End near the Sutro Baths in San Francisco. The stunning ocean views and cliffs with the wind swept cedar trees provided such fascinating and beautiful views, and so different from my mid-western home.
Some of those trees seemed to only precariously hang on the the edge of the cliff, with their roots hanging on to their grip in the rocks, at least for now.
Looking back on these scenes from early spring this year, the passage of nearly ten months has passed so quickly!
What scenes have filled our eyes in that time! So many moments of the mundane and ordinary, and so many others that reveal remarkable wonder and beauty. What a world!

Tallest in the city ~ Saint Augustine, Florida
In 1928, a year after the Bridge of Lions was first opened, the building was constructed to house the First National Bank and the offices of onetime Mayor Herbert E.
The last year the building was actually owned by a bank was 1992; when it was owned by FNB Properties Inc – a subsidiary of First Union National Bank. Many owners...same beautifully detailed building.
