I wish someone would write a type study of the UK made Stanley planes. I've seen a good few of these planes and although some of the later ones aren't always very good, the older ones are almost without exception very good planes.
I know they don't have thick cutters, rosewood handles or thick frogs. But irrespective, they're generally well made from good casting moulds and if set up correctly, will serve very well for a sliver of the money you have to cough up for older US made Stanley's.
I believe that this example is one of the oldest made UK planes. A sure sign of this is that the depth adjusting Y-lever is cast and not stamped steel. The body is also thicker, the casting is precise and the contours are crisp. Later ones often display differing thicknesses in the cheeks, softer screws, pressed metal levers and poorly and thinly outlined lettering on the body.
The no 5 jack plane is a very good workhorse and since I almost never use this model for smoothing, a minimum of fettling is required. The cutter isn't one of the best, but on the other hand it is very quickly sharpened and modified for various purposes.
Another good thing about the older UK made planes is that they are generally very easily dismantled for cleaning. On this one I detached every single part with the exception of the lateral adjuster.
