Rental car short trip (four days) to Scotland, mid-august 2014. Due to the cheap easyjet flights from Berlin, Glasgow Airport offered as a good starting point of my trip to Scotland this year. I visited, among others, the following locations: Island of Bute with the town of Rothesay and Stuart Castle, the Island of Kintyre with Tarbert at Loch Fine, the area around the Loch Lomond with Tarbet, Luss and Balloch, at Strathclyde the towns of Helensburgh, Greenock, Gourock and Largs, at the Island of Great Cumbrae: the town of Millport , at Argyll: the towns of Dunoon and Inveraray, such as the town of Stirling with Stirling Castle.

A parade of shops in Pennycomequick, Plymouth. This parade still exists, and the post office and shop on the right is now a post office and Londis store. The building just in front of the railway bridge is now gone. The camera position seems to be at the start of Central Park Avenue, so there is a roundabout in the foreground of this view now.

Postcard photo probably taken before 1920, although there are tramlines in the foreground. Perhaps someone knows when trams arrived in this road?

HISTORY OF HAM HOUSE

Wikipedia links in blue.

The original house was built in 1610 by Sir Thomas Vavasour (1560-1620). After his death, the lease passed to John Ramsay (1580-1626), First Earl of Holderness.

Shortly after Ramsay's death in 1626 it became the residence of, and then in 1637, the property of William Murray, 1st Earl of Dysart.

Earl of Dysart is a title in the Peerage of Scotland--it was created by King Charles I in 1643 for William Murray and has been held continuously since then by his relatives. Dysart is a town in Scotland, in the County of Fife.

William Murray bequeathed it to his daughter Elizabeth (1626-1698).

Elizabeth Murray married, first, Sir Lionel Tollemache (1624-1669), 3rd Baronet of Helmingham Hall in Suffolk. She became the mistress of Ham House and the Countess of Dysart. In 1672, three years after Sir Lionel's death, she married John Maitland, the Duke of Lauderdale, when his first wife died in that year. Duke of Lauderdale is a title in the Scottish Peerage. Lauderdale is a valley in the Scottish Borders.

Elizabeth Murray became the Countess of Dysart and Duchess of Lauderdale.

Alterations to Ham House.

From The National Trust History of Ham House:

Between 1637-39, William, the First Earl of Dysart, and his wife Catherine, embarked on a series of lavish decorative alterations to the house. These changes were designed to reflect their taste, their favoured status as friends of the King and Queen, and their position as key members of the royal court.

After their marriage, Elizabeth Murray (daughter of William and Catherine) and John Maitland were created Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale. To match their high status, they transformed Ham House into one of the grandest Stuart houses in England.

They extended the house to the south to create more rooms and employed the best craftspeople to provide the finest interiors, furniture, and art. Many of these craftspeople had also worked on royal palaces and collections. They also developed the formal gardens surrounding the house, including a private garden for Elizabeth and a showpiece walled kitchen garden.

It was a seven-mile bike ride from my apartment to Stuart Beach - mostly flat except for two big drawbridges. I'd bike there most weekends and sometimes drive there after work, since work got out at 4pm. This particular weekend I went with friends.

Whether you are dressing up your weekend look or taking a break from heels in the office, these Stuart Weitzman loafers are the perfect addition to your shoe wardrobe. They may be pre-owned but you could never tell from the shine of these shoes. The toe box does have some creases but there is no discoloration. It will probably up the comfort level since these shoes have already been broken in.

The low 1 inch block heel gives you just a bit of height with a lot of stability. There is a silver plate accenting the tops of the shoes. Stuart Weitzman is made of quality construction so these are sure to last through a few seasons. The classic loafer style will also stay around from season to season. They are marked as a size 8/1/2 AAAA, however, I am a size 7 1/5 normal width and they fit me a bit snug. I think narrow 7 or 7 1/2 foot would be a good fit for this shoe.

These shoes retail around $230.

As part of a three day visit to Northern BC, Premier John Horgan and Minister Scott Fraser visited Stuart Lake Hospital in Fort St. James.

I have photographed Stuart before. He's an English major at Loyola University New Orleans. He started juggling at age 7 and uses it to help suppliment his income. If you are ever on Royal Street on the weekend, check him out.
