Amazingly, this structure which has survived battles, earthquakes, and who knows what else, was built entirely without nails. Instead it uses a system of mortise and tenon joints which have been in use for over 7000 years in China.

I kept seeing people's HDR shots, so had a play. I'm not sure I like HDR in the first place. These only have a High Structure set and nothing else

Comments welcomed, but, I have to confess, I'm still not convinced!

At first glance the roof lines of this small structure look like a miniature Shinto shrine. But the cross beam at the front is a scale model of the ones found in Buddhist temples with stylized elephants with prominent trunk and tusks at each end. And the endcaps on the roof ridge are the ancient symbol of Buddhism that originated in the north of India. Theoretically this spot could express a dual function, since up until the 1870s local people easily conflated the mercies of Shinto kami and Buddhist bodhisattva. Only after the 1870s did the new constitutional government in Tokyo begin segregating and separating Shinto (an indigenous religion) from Buddhism (a foreign religion), according to the doctrine of 廃仏毀釈 (haibutsu kishaku, abolish Buddhism, destroy Shakyamuni) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haibutsu_kishaku

What can I say about Burning Life that hasn't been said by 100's of other bloggers, photographers and networkers. SL was born in San Francisco, California... and so was the original Burning Man event.

In SL we have opportunities to build and create things that can not be done in real life. On this week long event, SL has given the opportunity to several builders to show-off their stuff.

The big news at the event is that HCI or Organica probably has the biggest presence at this event. They are everywhere!

FUNNEL VISION

The purpose of this structure is to act as a place for learning and engaging with the natural environment, where the sky becomes your theater to enhance the user's experience with the site. Since the site sits on a high location, the intention with this building is to take advantage of the different perspectives on the sites view. To not obstruct existing views as you approach the building, much of the structure is fixed and embedded underground. The outdoor exhibit space loops around the top of the mound providing 360 views of the site and its horizon. The funnel that vertically pierces the building, pokes out of the top of the slope creating a large circular aperture overhead, funneling down to the water purification system on the bottom floor. The center aperture has multiple functions, acting as a ledge, indoor rainwater feature, and naked eye observatory for the bottom exhibit floor. Other major Apertures funnel perpendicular to the centered funnel to mysteriously peak out of the hilltop when you see the building from a distance while also providing directed views of the sky. Each floor of the structure focuses on different ideas of the site’s different perspectives. While the top focuses on 360 views outdoors, the middle is more oriented and enclosed, and with the bottom exposed exhibit space completely directed towards the towers. The main material of this building is concrte and steel for sturdy foundation and then finished with cement cladding and locally found wood for interior walls and details.

Erected in 1893, this charming structure combines Second Empire and Romanesque Revival elements. It was designed by and was built by contractors James George and Robert George. A new Nicholas County Judicial Center was built to the east of the courthouse square in 2020.

The Nicholas County Courthouse is a contributing property to the Carlisle Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Carlisle, Kentucky is a lovely small town located in the Appalachian foothills. It serves as the seat of Nicholas County.

The brand spanking new Performing Arts Center at Soka University of America. The building sticks out like a sore, if beautiful, thumb amid what seemed like a carefully designed, balanced and serene campus. It would be more at home at UCI. For one, it pretty much blocks the best view of the Founders Hall there used to be.
