Brick face looks fine, but hidden troubles are lurking.

The beautiful blue colours on the wings of this (unfortunately dead) bird are "structural" meaning they come from the microscopic structure of the feathers and the way that interacts with light, rather than from pigments. For this reason - because there are no pigments involved - the colours do not fade. A signal that you are looking at structural colour is the fact that it changes or disappears as you shift your angle of view.

Nowadays, we are beginning to exploit the properties of structural colour for example, to produce auto paints that make a car change colour as it goes past! An old exploitation of structural colour was the use of blue butterfly's wings in jewellery. It was the shimmering, the brightness and the non-fade properties that made the wings desirable for this purpose.
